Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo. New inner sills and rollcage mounts
Started today looking at my charge piping. I have just enough room to use the old set up. Just need to get some black silicon hoses to replace these.
It's not an ideal set up though with the bends so will be something to assess later.
I also have just, just enough room to use a group A filter.
I then looked at making up a return pipe for the turbo oil. I ended up using a Subaru impreza water hose, welded to a standard T3 return pipe base.
I've also been looking at the floor and the inner sills were looking a little tired. They didn't seem too bad, but rather than patch them I've decided to fully replace them.
Looing at the insides and the inner sills after I removed them I think it was the right choice. Thankfully the inner sills are still solid and only needed a wire brushing and 3 50p sizes Krust rust treatments. I then cold galvenised them before fitting the new sills over the top.
I could only do the one side as the other sill is on back order
I then looked at mounting the roll cage. I'm using a bolt in cage, but I have decided to weld it to the car. I remembered about 4 years ago I made some floor plates to put a cage in my Fiesta but never used them. They fitted perfectly and only needed the front section extended 10mm to meet the floor.
(I really should have cut out the crap repair patch that was done before I had the car but after grinding it back its solid and will be seam sealed anyway)
Other side
Also going to do the same with the fronts. Cut the feet off and sit them on little platforms
Pretty productive day...

Cheers mate. It was a bit hit and miss with the welder as I don't weld that often and the car body panels seem very thin compared to the 4-5mm thick rollcage mount so was a bit of playing with the wire speed and amps so it penitrated the mount and was a good strong joint without blowing through the car. Got there though.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo. New inner sills and rollcage mounts
Got another one of the bigger jobs out of the way today. The downpipe. I made my own out of a Mongoose 3inch. The 3 inch bores looks alot bigger next to the old 2.5 inch
I had to competely cut it to peices and re angle everything.
Tacked in place.
All welded up. Conveininetly, the 3 inch bore slipped tightly over the flexi pipe and the 2.5 inch bore slipped nicely inside giving good seams to weld up.
All wrapped up.
Also got my new top hats for the fornt suspention from Gaz, so got these fitted.
And managed to get some more bits in paint.
Fitted my carbon cam belt cover, needed a little trimming, just needs laquer now.
And also done done my strut brace. Only, the chap at the fastners gave me the wrong length bolts!

Tell me about it, Mark. If you told me back in June 2008 when I bought the car that it would be the spec it is now, built by me, running an engine I'd assembled I'd have laughed. I love the downpipe. I'm so proud of that.

Looking good under that bonnet !
What inlet is that ? ubber cool
bit of advise regarding the oil return hose. I used a water hose on my t3 when i first fitted it years back. The oil slowly degrades the rubber as it isnt made from a specific oil resistant rubber. Mine went all saggy and eventually split with a poke or two.
So i would get onto samco or roose to see how much a proper oil resistant hose.
Last thing you want is a split hose dumping all the oil from turbo on the floor

The manifold is an MFI XR3i manifold, modified to use EFI injectors. It was made by Christain Major who had the 170MPH 350BHP CVH.
Don't worry, it's proper oil hose. I've also learnt the hard way using Silicon hose offcut.

thats some bloody neat looking welding mate, great job doing the exhaust, takes some careful planning to pull that off, with only an inch of two room for error in that sump passage!

Quite. I had to build it on the car a section at a time, but wanted the peices as big as I could with the least welded joints I could manage. Last thing I want is it cracking. The weldings really coming on, but I don't mind taking my time with it as I really enjoy welding.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo. 3 INCH DOWNPIPE + Custom cages Rollca
Not much done, but a few little jobs. Boost hosing all finished and K&N filter on. The filter fits!.....just. Had to buy a massive hose for the turbo to air filter and cut it down to nearly nothing As this charge set up is temporary I didn't bother to buy new black hose, I wrapped it in SFS silicon tape. It did a real good job! Just need to put some more can gasket all the way round when the tops dried to cover the red and blue hose ends.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo. 3 INCH DOWNPIPE + Custom cages Rollca
Just sorted the drivers seat out so at least I can drive it around for now.
I was using the Cosworth runners initially, but wasn't happy with the home made mounts, so sourced a set of MK4 Escort runners.
Old, heavy Cossie runners off.
RST items on
Fitting them in the car to position the seat, the original holes on the right of the picture sat the seat perfectly centered to the steering wheel without fouling the trim or gear stick, so these were re used. The RST runners are about 12mm narrower than the cossie holes didn't quite line up on the left
SO, I knocked this up.
Now, it fits perfectly.
While I was there I thought it would be a good idea to renew the steering column bush.
and just for Danny, I gave it a wash.
Badly needs polishing though. It's scratched all over

Cheers guys.
Got a few more bits in paint last night ready to fit tomoz.
Driveshafts
Also lacquered the carbon fibre mirrors. They have had about 10 coats of lacquer now. Just have to leave them a few days to harden then flat and polish them.
Also spoken to the lads at AH Fabrications and having a bespoke intercooler and charge carrier set up comissioned for the car to work better with the inlet and exhaust manifold/turbo set up.
