I probably wouldn't do a smoothed bay if I had the option again. It just takes so so long to do and I'd hate to pay the bill if a bodyshop did it!

Picked it up Saturday night.

It's not perfect like Daves (twins), but then again, I didn't expect it to be. What I paid for it to be finished barely covered the materials used, let alone labour. I might re do it at some stage if I keep the car, but for now, I'm more than happy.

Cheers Jay and Jon. Adam... You are a bandit!

I know what you mean. But, the car will be built, engine in, brakes on, interior in etc just won't be MOT'd, taxed and mapped. Won't be there engineless. I can see what you mean, it is a little sad, but I was hoping to have it done and bought tickets, be a shame not to turn up.

Postby muz on Fri Jul 30, 2010 11:01 pm

Had a few hours today to crack on with rebuilding the car. Even if it is just dry built so I can get it to Ford Fair.

The seam welding has burnt away the stonechip and paint in the inner arches so I re stone chipped both sides. I'll re paint these after Ford Fair when I'm not so rushed.

Image

Image

Then while that dried I started to put the braking system back in place. Compbrake pedal box, brand new stearing rack, rose jointed top mounts, wiper assembly and all the other bits. However, I can't for the life of me think where I have put the plastic bushes So they can wait. So glad I took the time to spray everything properly this time, looks so much better.

Image

Image

Then put the brakes and suspension on. I still need to sort brackets out for the calipers, but again, this can wait until after Ford Fair.

Jobs for Sunday are to get the engine and interior in then we should be good to go. 8)

I've got all day tomorrow, Monday night and Friday night to get the engine and interior in. We should be fine. TBH as long as the engine is in the bay, and the seats are all in I don't care. It wont be running and I can whip the engine back out anyway so don't have to worry about timing it up etc, but if I can get it done I will.

You coming up in the Fiesta, Dave, or in that chaps FocRS?

Got a little bit more done today.

Got the engine all builts up and put in with a little help from Conor and Paul. Fitted all new oil jets, got the bottom pully all timed up etc, just waiting for my camshaft woodruff key to arrive and I can put the cambelt on before Ford Fair. Aalso got all the front anti roll bar etc all fitted up. Bonnets also on and a few little other bits and peices.

Only got tomorrow night and Friday night left to finish little bits off, but as long as the interior is in and the intercooler on that will do for now. :D

To be honest it won't look much different when its running. The battery is going in the boot, fusebox under the dash, looms routed through the inner wings and out of a gommet at the back. Map sensor, ignition amps and coil mounted behind the heater box, so all you will see when its complete is a gearbox, header tank, heater box and the brake lines :Q

Bit more done tonight

Got the intercooler on.

Image

Fitted the front bumper.

And I've thrown the interior in. Dash is held in by 2 bolts, front seats one bolt each etc, oh well, at least it looks ok lol.

I'm happy to take it like it is now. Will put the sunroof in Wednesday, wash and pilish it friday and we're set.

In clean standard condition I actaully like the retro-ness of the MK3. The MK4 is a little bit plasticy and harsh.

The grill in the middle of a MK3 dash? It's to access the dash warning light ECU  The MK3 had so many more safety lights than the MK4. Low brake pad level light, low oil, screen wash level and :Q

Finally got my handbrake callipers on!

I made some mounts out of 4mm steel and welded them to the existing calliper brackets. Very pleased with how they have come out and they work perfectly.

And as if I didn't have enough width on the back end with the 8J rims. The bells on these rear brakes give me a further 20mm or so

Also done most of the wiring loom, but how interesting is a loom

Looking good, handy bit of fabricating going on there, its an odd way to have a handshake, but it seems that method is far superior to an integral drum, less to go wrong, is it still cable operated the handbrake?

This car will be one unique and sweet mk4 once finished

i thought the same thing :(
quite alot of force goes through the hubs to stop the car. Vibration alone could crack the best of welding on them especially at 4mm of metal.

on another note
