Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo TRACK CAR. Rear link kit made.
I was going to have a day off today after having to have my thumb stitched back together yesterday, but I got bored. I only went up the workshop to take some measurements and ended up doing the bonnet.
Managed to get hold of a brand new non vented bonnet from eBay. Marked it all up, measured, measured again, checked measurements, measured again, usual sketch. Wasn't sure whether to use the whole bulge or just the front vent. Decided to take the plunge and do the lot.
Cut out the middle, not much left of the Escort item. No turning back.
And, luckily, the Lancia bonnet dropped straight in.
And a test fit, check it all lines up.
I don't mean to blow my own horn, but I think it looks fudgekin great! Looks different, but not over the top. It's also practical as I've positioned it so the front vent sits right over the air filer and the hot turbo and manifold and the rear vent can still be used for the air box. Will just need a shield knocked up.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo TRACK CAR. Lancia Integrale bonnet on
Havent updated this lately, so I'll pop a few pics up. Got the rear end in stone chip, finally! I had to strip practically everything back to bare metal, zinc prime, primer, Gravitex and the 2k top coat. Turned out nice, though. Can tell the difference between the Gravitex and 2k rather than the Tetrosol and Hammerite. The finish it so much nicer, so the whole floor is will be re down when I finish the welding, hopefully today.
Seam sealed an Gravitex. The seams were sealed before the Gravitex then I re-sealed some of the high impact areas afterwards, as well.
There was also a small bit of rot in the rear, lower number corner, so this was replaced, as was the inner panel which I had to hand fabricate.
Unfortunately, I couldn't borrow the correct air fed mask to spray the 2K in time, as I wanted it finished before I go back to work, so decided to roller the 2K on. I wasn't going to change to with just a carb-can mask.
Came out really nice, though, just took a little longer.
Then got the rear suspension all back on.
Then popped the rear bumper on, but It didn't look right. I didn't like how it hid all the suspension so got the grinder out.
I'm so much happier with it this time round. This will be the last time I fit-up the rear end!
Todays jobs are to finish the side exit exhaust so I can put it in place and finish boxing up the sill, then finish the cradle for the floor mount pedal box and get that welded inlace. I also need to get the seat rails in, but depends if I have enough time.

Cheers, Mark. I love the build up phase, just a shame there a lot more fab and paint work to do on the rest of the car, yet.
First I had to make a small piece to finish the sill notch.
Then cracked on with the exhaust.
Ended up using my Mongoose back box, as it fits perfectly, well made and sounded nice in it original layout.
Welded a 90 degree on the end and a square oval tailpipe.
Not entirely happy with the side skirt cut out, if I'm honest, but it is what it is.
I've started on the pedal box frame, but its not finished yet.

Master cylinder wise, I was going to run a .625 front and .70 clutch and rear brake. I might invest in a set of AP Racing short cylinders. Depends if I can wangle any discount on them! Lol.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo TRACK CAR. Lancia Integrale bonnet on
Few bits done the last two days. Got hold of some brand new AP short cylinders for a steal. They only had .75, .70 and .625 which I'm using for rear, front and clutch, respectively.
They are quite a bit shorter than standard!
Time to start the mock up for the seat rails and pedal box mount.
Happy with the seating position etc it was time to weld it all in.
Seat rails and harness anchors in.
Pedal box frame made and in. I reinforced the floor with 1.5mm plate.
Also finished by brakes during the night while I've been at work and knocked up some brackets from 8mm steel.
I'm just wondering if the calliper is slightly too close to the bell? How much will heat expansion affect it?

Have you seen the size of the workshop! Ain't no heating that
I do have a diesel space heater but wasn't too happy risking paint etc. I'll probably crack on with other jobs until spring.

Have you thought about sticking a piece of carbon on the side skirt around the cut out for the side-exit?
Like you see on escort/saph cosworth rear bumpers sometimes. Just to tidy it up as you said you were not happy with the cut.

Hiya,
i just looked at your thread and realised you used the rose jointed top mounts on the front. were these from compbrake?
if so are they these ones? http://www.compbrake.com/product/ford-escort-mk3-and-mk4-rs-turbo-xr3i-fixed-top-mount-pair/
Are they any good? how easy were they to fit?
would you happen to know if mk3 fiesta is the same mount as mk3/4 escort?
hope you can help

Yeah, they are the old style Compbrake ones. They seem ok, but I haven't used them on the road yet. They should fit a MK3 Fiedta.
Got the exhaust wrapped.
The floors finally finished, again! Not got pics of all the work as I lost my phone a few weeks back with some of them on.
Also got some bits in paint. Refreshed the TCA's
And the Coilovers as they were looking a bit bashed, not sure I've made the right choice with the colour, though.
Stripped bare.
And painted the same colour as the suspension arms.
I do like the Leda Blue colour but felt there was too much going on with the colours, yellow callipers, blue shocks, green ARB etc.
Still got the rears to do...

It's in primer. Lechler Ti Filler 2k high build. As I applied it with a roller I couldn't get in everywhere, hence the grey, and in some places, yellow high build can primer. Bare metal etch primed In guide coat and started the seam sealing before I ran out of sealer. Its a long old job rubbing back with 600 wet. So far, I've flatted one door X bar lol.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo TRACK CAR. Lancia Integrale bonnet on
Spent another few hours prepping the car. Re priming the sand thoughs and priming the seam sealer. Can see a few of the test patches on the boot floor and tubs of the top coat.
The I figured, the primer went on well with a 4inch roller, why not the top coat...
Mixed some colour
And rolled on the first layer.
Obviously needs another coat as this is just one and I didn't have time to finish it, but it's come out surprisingly well!
I've got a little bit of solvent pop here and there so will probably 1000wet and cut the final coat to tidy it up, and get an aerosol or two made up to get into the places the roller can't, but so far, I'm happy.

Re: Muz's Escort RS Turbo TRACK CAR. Lancia Integrale bonnet on
I've been a way with work for a month so haven't don't much to the car. I did, however, have a little gift waiting for me when I got back, which was a eBay bargain from the States.
A Tilton billet reservoir.
So knocked up a simple bracket out of Ali.
Also got a set of twin ignition amps on a bracket which I fitted which I was at it.
Then spent the rest of the afternoon stripping down my old Goodridge lines to go with the new layout and ordering new fittings which came to just shy of £250
