Some engine purchases.

Brand new Ford Crate Engine - Series 3/Black Top 2.0

Brand new Focus RS Mk1 Pistons and Rods

p1.jpg
p2.jpg

I was going to fit a Focus RS engine, but the cost/benefit ratio didn't stack up for me. I appreciate the FRS lump has a 30% increased flow water pump, and unique cams, and valve springs, but the design goal for this project is a road car. It'll be given to my girlfriend for her runabout (I'll pinch it for the odd track day!), so power will be capped to 280ish bhp. For this I don't need anything exotic in terms of hardware, and it will be managed by EECV management for great driveability.

All sounds great, where did the engine come from?

Great stuff :) That's a really good idea, using a new crate-2.0 Blacktop then installing the FRS pistons/rods :aviator:

At least you know the engine is new and isn't some Ebay rip off that's covered 200,000 miles at 30 PSI boost but is being sold as "30k miles, runs perfectly"!

I think the Ford EECV is a great bit of kit, "Allinking" on this forum and myself are both using it. There's no denying that stand-alone ECU's are very desireable but pound for pound, the EECV FRS ECU is a great choice for a 300ish BHP Zetec or Duratec in my humble opinion :)

Cheers chaps.

Jimmy I love it, the SCP bus should output lots of useful information, that and the usefulness of EOBDII make it a winner. I think the later units also have CAN! It's technically far superior to most of the basic after market stuff anyway.

smo The FRS pistons/rods are a funny one when it comes to resale - that's why I got them so incredibly cheap. For one, Ford don't sell the rings for them, and also the pistons are only made to suit a standard bore - which rules out pretty much all second-hand Zetec's these days.

FRSJON Yes they are both steel, but the FRS rods are even beefer than the already beefed up ST170 rods:

Engine/material/wrist pin
Std. Zetec - cast - 20.638mm
ST170 - Forged 20.638mm
FRS - Forged - 22mm

Mirror base plates will be either satin or gloss black. I sprayed them with the mirrors as it's easier, and the more paint that goes on the plastic, the better :)

 I've been here too long, and done too many Mk3 projects.

I'm one of the original members, from the 'beginning'. I joined in 1999 when I was 18 and at the time I was underway with a full restoration including buying a brand new shell (the Quattro project car). This was back before digital cameras were widely available so I have all the photos on film.

Handles? This will be a good spec car so I don't want 80's/90's pauper-style black door handles. They create enough wind noise as it is without being covered in dimple effect plastic :)

Colour coded baseplates look awful on the Mk3, I agree with you there. Mine are now nice and smooth though so once they are black, I can polish the car without worrying about white marks on any exposed plastic :D

If Satan did electrical work...
Image
Image

One pair of the motor coil feed wires has burnt out on my compressor.
Image

I've replaced them...
Image

...but the motor still hums when I turn it on. I've ordered a new start and run capacitor: they look pretty old and are cheap enough compared to the cost of a new motor.
Image
Image

I suspect a new 3hp motor may be in order, but I'll try swapping out the caps first. I'll tidy up the motor wiring whatever happens!

I'm a bit disappointed as I could have got the first coat of lacquer on the car today, and I'm anxious to get it done ahead of the really cold weather. I'm back in 3 weeks' time so I hope it's still fairly mild.

Ahh well. At least this happened before I started rather than half way through a panel :)

I've never been 100% keen on colour coded handles on the Mk3, I think its because the design sticks out so much anyway that trying to hide them never works.

Will look fine though :)
