My Audi 80's.. (Avant project - new wheels!)

Postby Max M4X WW on Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:11 pm

Just thought I'd stick these up in case anyone is interested!

I'd always wanted an Audi 80, don't know why but just liked the look of them. A friend had a 1.6 petrol with a soon expiring MOT and I took it off their hands as a to see what it needed and to use as a winter runaround. I spent 4x what I paid for the car getting it through the MOT with new tyres etc, serviced it and used the car for a few months. With fuel prices increasing and Lou using the 540 daily for work we decided to look for a Diesel to save doing so many short trips in the BMW (cant be good for the engine either, 10 miles a day five days a week)

Having owned two diesel 306's previously we started looking for these but most have had hard lives, we thought about various diesel cars including xantia's, rover 400's and more but trying to get a decent derv for under a grand is difficult! We then stumbled across an 80 TDi Avant, after a quick look round the car we decided to take it. They are both pictured below, I've swapped the wheels on the cars as I obviously want the alloys!

Image

Image

When we got the Avant it had a towbar..
Image

Which I swiftly removed and also painted the exhaust..
Image

The back of the old one, I stuck an exhaust trim on to tidy it up..
Image

Couple of interior pics of the Saloon, not got any of the new one yet..
Image

Image

Image

Comparing both cars..

The saloon is a 1.6 8v Petrol SE with 100bhp - it has sporty ish seats, leather steering wheel, extra gauges, alloy's (had!) and a rear spoiler. 139k miles. It drives great for the age etc, really smooth.
The avant is a 1.9 TDi with 90bhp - its not an SE but does have the same seats, an after market electric window kit instead of factory but does have a factory electric sunroof. 145k miles. I need to find a new steering wheel as the later airbag wheel is awful!

The TDi drives smoother and feels quicker during normal driving, its really loud at idle but on the move its near silent in the cabin. Just need to sell the petrol now !

Sorry for the rambling!

The interior is miles apart from a mk3 fiesta, better materials, fit, kit and quality really.

Not sure what its like on fuel yet, still on the first tank!

Took it to the rolling road the other day, not a bad figure for 146k miles and all I've done to it is blank the egr, vent in the wheel arch liner for intercooler and bigger airbox feed. Standard they are 90nhp.

Looking into new injectors, exhaust mods and remaps but its an old car and its not so commonly done compared with the PD's etc.

Image

Today I fitted a sport steering wheel which is usually found on cabriolet, s2, rs2, a4, s6, s5's etc etc of a similar age..

Image

Image

Massive improvement and a change from the non airbag sport wheel I had before :)

Hopefully, trying to get my head round the front struts. They have inserts for the shocks which are removable!

Wheels are 16x9 :) 4x108 too so may stick one on the fiesta

It was doing 49mpg on the first couple of tanks but I'm told to expect a bit less with the smaller wheels (tyres) because of the gearing :-?

You're travelling less distance per engine revolution with smaller wheels, can't imagine it will be by much though!
