Surely if the run is paint, you can sand it?

hey james, car is looking good as always, glad to see see the rear getting same treatment as the front, shame about the runs tbh, but i suppose one of those things when you spray in inadequate light and not in a booth with sufficent ventilation to take away the over spray!

certainly looks a good match though, get 40-50 tins and paint the whole car it will all match then for shore :D

top work as always attention to detail is the key :) hope the second session of painting goes better than the first

Cheers Gary :) Not sure I fancy spraying the car with 50 tins though  Fitted the bumper up last night, and although it's only one thin coat, unpolished, I still think it's going to be too light/pink. It looks okay in some lights and from certain angles, but in others (as in the second pic) it looks pink!

Image

Image

So I'll secure the bumper fully and drive to Halfords to check out some more colour charts this afternoon I think...only 11 days till I drive down to FITP so I'm not sure I'll get the front bumper done :-?

Yes that does look slightly lighter, and I'd imagine a polish would make it lighter still! I thought halfords produced paints for your car? I always got Dark Aubergine for my fiesta :-?

compulsion60 - Thanks dude :) *hug* ;)

Mike - The Radiant Red on the colour chart's a joke! I've had three different reds mixed for this car now; front bumper, underbonnet and rear bumper. The first two colours match their colour chart sample perfectly, though the rear bumper is currently darker than the sample colour. On one of the runs where the paint is thicker, it was much closer to the chart sample, so once I've got the other coats on it should be a much better match, specially after a polishing :)

Rob - As above. I've ordered two more tins of the Hip Hop red I used for the first coat - I think it'll work out okay :)

The drive to/from Halfords (20 minutes each way) was bloody awesome. There are only a few short stretches and open corners that allow for overtaking, and I was leap frogging 2, 3, 4 cars in one blast in the shortest of distances. It totally belongs on the twisties, absolutely loved it :aviator:

Let's hope for a dull FITP then!
Out of interest then, how many Ford Red's were produced for the Fiesta Mk3? (The reds that look like yours, i.e. not the dark one)

The colours come sorted into Manufacturer and year, models don't come into play, but Ford's Radiant Red is nothing like mine, and yes, as usual, the Halfords staff delight in telling me it's a 14 year old car and the paint changes colour. No sh*t  After explaining the dark colour situation, and saying I wasn't sure if it'd brighten up with more coats, as soon as "Did you put primer on?" was asked of me I just walked away

well u'v certainly done a better job than i did on the offside front wing of my car lol. I didn't sand it very well so was fuill of lil scraches and I only used one coat of primer without flatting it off. Then used one very thin coat of paint andn it just looks shag :( . Oh well will soon be getting another couple of coats of paint then a few of laquer :) so should lok ok. But it is only a metro so who cares really!!!

Hope u get it all sorted for fitp man otherwise i may have to sing the pink panther tune at your car :P

You mind find it easier just to get it painted professionally than going through the ballache and the hassle of finding the right colour and then spraying it and cocking it up :)

joycey - It worked fine on the front, so I'm sure I'll be able to get satisfactory results once again :) And once again, these are only temporary measures till the whole shell gets worked over and resprayed so I'm happy with it :)

niracka - Yep, no way it's changing from red :)

dgstrain - No pics of it mounted actually, but there's a mount that clamps to the headrest stalks, with a ball joint and mounting platform on the other end that the camera's mounted to.

sphinx - It's been a total nightmare. I gave it yet another coat of red, and got even worse runs. That's two coats that have had to be sanded through to primer in parts :x I hunted through all my nozzles and found one out of the five or six that didn't hurl lumps of paint onto the bumper. It was fine, so I had a proper spray pattern, chasing the overspray across the bumper, leaving a lovely smooth gloss coat behind it...till that nozzle buggered up too. In the end I had to resort to pretty much spraying a canopy over the bumper and letting it settle. I'm desperately hoping I'm left with enough paint on there to be able to flat it off at least a little, because at the moment it's dappled all over, not a smooth coat :( I'll see what I can do, but I don't have any time to waste another tin or two of paint on it.

[quote="Ghost"]Sweet as mate, been trying to get hold of 'stopper' but cant find a sodding person that sells it so might have to buy it online. That would stop you pitting in the final filling stages![quote]

Mix some mineral spirits in with the filler so it goes more maluable and apply it to the little air bubble holes. It will dry just as hard, but will be thinner so sticks in the little holes.

I tried white spirit in it once and it just made the filler go all funky and bitty

now that is a mineral spirit, so im not sure that I'm doing it right

Update

Few bits of FITP work...

I finally sprayed the rear bumper on Wednesday ("finally" meaning this was my last shot at getting the paint tins to work properly..this was my third attempt with crappy nozzles):

Image

Image

Last night I started flatting it down, thinking that would be better than leaving it so terribly orange peely across the majority:

Image

Truth is it probably would've looked better if I'd just left it, as I'm getting a lot of swirl marks left behind. Oh well, another excuse to get the whole car sprayed

Some more flatting back (1200s followed by 1500s followed by about four thorough goings over with red T-Cut, followed by two passes with Mer, then a final glaze):

Image

So I've been doing that more today...the bumper's on the car now, but I'll keep polishing it on there, it was more important to get it fitted.

Picked up some new outer weather seals for the bottoms of the windows today:

Image

They've been bugging me for about four years

And yesterday afternoon I decided to resurrect my LED gear knob! :D The wires broke off a couple of years ago:

Image

and three of the four LEDs were dead. I soldered new wires onto the circuit board, ordered five LEDs and a mate of my dad's owns an electronics company so they soldered the new bulbs in for me (why not, since I was there? ;) ):

Image

And with the filter and lens on:

Image

It's back!!!! :D:D:D Still the only tasteful, non-chive (make your own minds up) LED gear knob I've seen to date! :aviator:

Much more work to do yet!

Mike - Indeed, I'm sure the mass of four working LEDs will give the gear lever the momentum it needs to hit third! Bumper's now on and been polished all over...it'll need more polishing once I arrive tomorrow but it'll do, and tbh...it's better than it looked before, not only because of the top strip, but because the chips and scuffs are all gone now :)

allinking - Will probably get that for you when I'm back from FITP, remind me.

niracka - Hah yep, people assume it'll be some hideous glowing skull when LEDs are mentioned, it's actually very sober. I'm always up for taking people for a spin, it's not quite so simple at a show though! We'll see eh? :)
