My big ZT thread > 15.4.08 25bhp/20lbft extra and track prep
No Max, I was disappointed in the looks of the thing mainly. I spoke with Wayne while they were developing it, and let him know that more and more, people were looking for a cooler which didn't require any cutting, and would sit below the bumper line. There the GRS EVO3 for anyone who wants something big, but to claim the other half of the market, we'd need something subtle. They did neither. It doesn't sit below the bumper line, and it's not a huge great thing that would rake in all the air available, it sort of peeps over the bumper at a funny angle
They do use very free-flowing cores, but like Ian says, that may reduce lag and pressure drop, but doesn't cool as well as a more restrictive core. It's always lose-lose anyway from that perspective. The only way I see I can get what I want is to have a cooler made to my dimensions, which is what I plan on doing.

Hay, straw...all the same to us townies!
So do the ST150 brakes actually fit without modifying? I thought SimonT said it needed work
If they fit on fine, then my advice would be to break the car and stop the project, just not worth wasting your money on it mate.... I'll give you £200 for the brakes!

Max - The shape of it would make it a bugger to work with, I'd rather spend less money on a more useful intercooler built to my dimensions.
Mike - They seem fine to me I think....hard to tell fully without trying them a bit, but they certainly bolt on with the same bolts, so no drilling required.

James - A question I get asked a lot, followed by "It was the boost wasn't it?". I still deny that as the reason, and believe it was a slow-forming problem created when a metal water pipe fractured and the engine ran dry, at about 90mph for something like 50 miles on a hot summers day, only indicating a mild increase in temperature because there was no water in the system, just air. It got worse and worse, and in the final stages was putting huge pressure through the cooling system, making me think a cylinder has cracked and the combustion process was forcing the gases into the water jacket. It's now in the hands of another FT.com member and he has a replacement bottom end coming for it. Would love to see it back in action!

Looking Good James!!!
What do you mean by this---
What starter motor you using and any particular reason why?
Thanks

i would assume any Mondeo start would be stronger than a fiesta one,
diesel engine with their higher compression ratios will require a stonger starter motor also

Probably the case, i'm only having problems with starting when hot because the exhaust is close to the starter, the FRST starts the car no problem when cold.
Thanks

Now now children! As Ian said though, I didn't mention the buyer's name for a reason, just as I didn't mention Mikee when I picked the engine up off him. I'm sure he'll tell all when he knows what's happening.
Matt - You ask a good quetsion - why use the Mondeo starter? Well...it doesn't work, so I know have a FRST starter on it Did the FRST have a shield as standard then?
Update from last night and today
Got the flywheel dowels from Ford at last, so flywheel on, clutch on:
Then to fit the gearbox. The shim plate that came with it didn't have a cut-out for the CPS, so that needed changing as follows:
Held it up, saw where it needed cutting back, then stitch-drilled it out:
Ground back the rough bits and ended up with this:
Then went for a trial fit. Wasn't quite enough, so a bit more grinding...
And on it went, you can see where it needed to clear the CPS (silver circle on the left!)
So, gearbox on, lifted it back onto the pallet truck and it was ready to go in:
Oo er
And it's in! Of course there are still things to do, but I can't say it wasn't a nice sight
Then came the bad part...towing it back to its shed It's only about 50-100m, but on the two corners I had to turn, I was getting a kind of rubbing...clunking....jumping noise/feeling, perhaps 3, 4 or 5 times per wheel revolution? It did not feel good, and I'm wondering if it was a driveshaft not in place properly. I'm sure I remember people saying the FRST had longer driveshafts, so I'm wondering if I need different driveshafts, and the diesel ones just aren't long enough. Any ideas? It was only on very tight turns...it was too dark to investigate.
Anyway, it's now in the smaller shed. It used to be where my sister's Polo is, but my dad moved a trailer so it can go where it is now, and the ramp's shallower so no more exhaust scraping when I drive in

No it was still on enough for the gaitor to be attached without the clip around it, it was still physically in the hole, I just wonder if it had partially disengaged for some strange strange reason. Something's definitely not right down there.

Alright James,
Did you have you hub nuts up to torque? Mine made exactly the same type of noise when i moved mine without the hub nuts tightened up.
Shield came as standard, about £23 from Ford, i bought one last week, Item 3 in the pic, FINIS 1654781
Hope that helps, looking good, got my mates rebuilt FRST started today, were happy aswell, but his starter motor was also toast, so it running mine for now.
Thanks

Ian - Why? My last ones were red, and I think too many pikeys are painting their calipers these days, gotta keep on your toes otherwise what you thought looked ok and customised can now throw you into chavdom! I think they look ok silver. Am making a conscious effort not to concentrate on small details like that, and cleaning things, and polishing/chrome etc for now, focusing on the important stuff for now
Matt - I left the hubs on the ends of the shafts throughout. The gearbox has no oil in yet...would that cause some problems of this sort?? Thanks a bunch for the heatshield info Glad your mate's is working now, he can now be toasted by The White One
sphinx - Yeah I thought today...I guess I can't complain at putting an engine in, fitting the AND getting it back on the ground in such a short time period. Looks like I'll be having a few late MSN nights when I get back to uni
Max - They bolted straight on, and as far as I can tell so far there are no problems. Need to bleed all the braking system thoroughly, as we did it briefly just to get it all rolling today. Pedal travel is long, but I think it's to be expected. Wasn't expecting them to feel spongy, but that could be down to a long-awaited fluid change. I noticed the cam cover colour match just as I left the car tonight, good innit?
ju575 - I'm not expecting to be at FITP this year sadly I go back to uni in about five days till March or something. There's too much to do in the time available to me, bearing in mind MSD need about a 2 month warning before my live map! Next year eh?

Ben - No I didn't replace the clips. Haynes said you should, but they look alright, and most Haynes stuff can be disregarded usually Do they really need replacing then? Haven't had a look yet, but will see if the joints are still properly engaged. The driveshaft problem was...let's say...a judgement error Diesel and petrol driveshaft ends are indeed the same!
Ad - Yeah I'll have proper net and communication in 5 days or so You can fill me in on the crazy Scottish new year

reason for painting them, SO THEY DONT RUST!
did i say paint em red?
i suggested Laquer so they stay the colour they are now
i would have replaced the driveshaft clips, but IF the shafts are back in and secure your probably alright
so the price you were gonna sell it for doesnt reflect what you paid??

looking good mate!
bet ya cant wait to get it all running!
a 2i interior loom is exactly the same as an FRST if that is any help! prob easier to come by and cheaper as well as it hasnt got the RS inflated price to go with it even tho its the same thing!

Alright James,
Are they on and torqued up or just finger tight?? The hub nuts when tight will hold the wheel bearings together you see, if they are loose, the bearing may start to seperate, the hub will become unsquare to the hub carrier and the brake discs will contact the pads (this is what happened to me). Failing that check that when on full lock or whenever this noise is being made that the cv joints arn't touching the hub carrier (may need a mirror and torch for that one) I doubt the oil int he gearbox would make the noise you describe, unless its the diff making the noise (If LSD is very possible)
On your intercooler problem, why don't you want the Evo 3? Is it because its not stealth enough, because if thats the case, with a bit of nipping and tucking it can be made to be almost stealth, failing that the small one like GavRST's???
Thanks
Matt
P.S I may toast him now, cause he's almost standard, but in 6-8 months when we do his ZVH conversion he may be a serious contender! I'll have to leave a few nuts in the cylinders when we do his rebuild
