Dave - Good to hear back from some of the more well-established FT members When the TDI went bang I was to and fro about going all out on it or just selling up and getting something modern and sensible. I decided to go for the first option, so just put all my learning and what practise I had into practise! I've always worked on cars and bikes and mountain bikes etc, so the essentials were always there, just took them on a bit with the Fiesta You just have to gain confidence, building up the tasks you attempt, and fixing the things you break if you do....you learn the most from the stuff that really pees you off! Where do you go in Cumbria? By all means come round for a blast!

This is an inspiration for anyone wanting to "have a go". When I started reading threads like this one I didn't even own a car! Now I've bought a moondust (K reg) FRST and am currently sorting barn space ready to strip it down for a bare metal resray, haven't decided on the engine spec but I suppose that comes down to the dollar you have at the time. The modifying bug has well and truly bit me again, I've just hit 25 and feel I've probably been too sensible for the past few years, started my own business, bought a house, filled it with stuff blahblahblah........ now I live for project restoration moondust!!! I plan on doing everything myself - spraying, welding, building components etc. won't get it right all the time but it's the best way to learn (can be expensive!).
Sorry for babbling on but I just wanted to without forums like these and people like you projects like this would never be attempted, you deserve all the praise and I'm relying on you for advice and support to get me through the dark days

leeroy - Glad to hear you're looking after your FRST so well Modifying's the only true way you get a car to be just how you want it, in terms of looks, comforts, performance and the rest of it - that's what makes these cars so dear to us You're right about learning from mistakes, it's the only way to do it. What you break and repair almost always ends up working out cheaper than it would've been paying someone else to do it in the first place. Engine building is an exception to that rule though! If you break one, it often appears that getting a pro to build it in the first would've been wiser. Still..you live and you learn

I appreciate the sentiments - I was spurred on by reading the projects that were going on on this forum when I started out, and still am when I read current projects. Those dark days are the tricky bits of projects..maintaining the faith and keep the goal in mind. You can do it etc! Best of luck, make good use of the Tech Probs forum and search functions

That makes for a very good read, makes me think of all the time/money/stress etc ive put into my FRST, i often thought about giving in and have done with it, but im glad i stuck at my probs and over come them.

ten bears - It certainly does. Every time I go to it and turn the key it starts, and goes as well as the last time I drove it, and that's what it's all about I feel. I've been saying that from the first time I drove it with the ZT in and mapped, and people have been saying "ooooh, don't say that, it'll break down now!", but the engine's been solid as a rock, and that makes it worth the time I spent on the conversion.

black2 - Cheers dude, these cars DO reward you with what can only be described as a seriously fun, mental-grin-inducing drive!
