My Clio 172 Cup 01/06/2011 Tiny Update.
Bought this with the intention of leaving it standard and running about in it. It came from a 50 year old fella who bought it brand new, so I am the second owner.
When I got it there were a few pin dents and a larger dent on the passenger door, so I had these repainted straight away, and also had the wheels refurbished. The paint on the body was done great, sadly the wheels were not, and while they look nice in pics they are not up to my standards in the flesh.
I also had both the cam and aux belts and tensioners replaced as soon as i got the car, in fact I did not drive it for a week until they were done as I did not get alot of history with the car and was worried about them failing! I was happy to find a great specialist locally to me to do this work, and some of the following bits too. I also transfered my personlised reg to the car.
Since then I have had to replace the exhaust as it was pretty rotten and soon blew a hole in it! I choose to fit a stealth system as I prefer it hidden behind the bumper as per standard. I was orginally going to fit the 2 1/4 system with a centre box, however this was out of stock and I needed to sort it urgently, so I ordered the 2.5 inch with a straight through to the rear box, no centre box. This is somewhat louder than what I intended, but it it does seem to have made the car more responsive. While the car was in the air I also had the gearbox dogbone mounts replaced with powerflex poly ones, as this improves the slightly wishy washy gearshift a bit.
Shortly after this the car developed a misfire, coupled with a flashing engine management light and rotten egg smell I decided it must be the cat, and decided to decat it, so it went to my mate who is handy with a welder, after I bought a length of stainless pipe.
As it happened, I found a minging spark plug while at his, which turned out to be the cause of the problem. At this point we had jacked the car up and got the welder out however, so Matt decatted the car anyway
With a new set of plugs the Clio was running spot on, I will order a set of leads for it when I can be arsed, as I reckon they need doing.
The decat has changed the sound of the car, I wouldn't say its louder, but the noise has gone from sounding like a Lancaster Bomber to a Spitfire, so thats nice for the neighbours. I suspect its occasionaly flaming too, as I keep seeing flashes in the rear view mirror, so its either flames, paparazi or no driving licence in a few weeks.
So what is next for this "left as standard" runabout I hear you cry, whilst no doubt nursing a semi?
Well I have just now ordered a brand new set of Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s, in 15s as the drop in size apperantly greatly improves the handling, and I rather fancied DJ2daMAXs when I was storing them for him, nice and light, and strong too. I have gone for a satin black finish, wonderful.
Next will be a subtle drop, Danny at 519 who I have used for the belts and stainless is a Spax dealer so I will be going for a set of 30mm springs, and possibly uprated dampers too. Danny also does the port matched inlet manifolds and remapping, so that will more than likely be the next step.
I also fancy the Whiteline ARB as this tightens the car up even more.
Other than that there are a few bits that I wish to replace due to being tatty, mainly the steering wheel. I would also like to replace the seats with the Trophy Recaros, if I can find a set for ok money.
I am also keeping it rather clean, cos I like smelling Dodo juice products.
So yeah, lovely.

Nice, you still running the Contisport contact 2's? As standard these cars handle so good on those tyres. Looks like a better one than mine

Re: My Clio 172 Cup.
i like it, love the enhancements and plans you got going too
call me a child but all this reading has given me such a urge to play Forza 3
apart from the response doy uo feel these exhaust changes are pushing the power more?
i know N/a engine slove breathing mods, but the clio engines to me seem like they've already had alot of effort pushed on them to get the factory figure and changing things is only reapplying what renault have already done if you follow me?

Re: My Clio 172 Cup.
Henry - I am running the Sportcontacts at the mo, but will be on Pirellis on monday, the sport contacts are right on the limit and t still does not break trraction easily tbh, very good tires!
Jony - I wouldn't say its got more power tbh, but it feels more responsive and climbs the revs faster in the midrange. These are apperantly not great for 0-60 or 1/4 mile stuff thou, all about the handling and getting from point to point quickly, ie a hot hatch lol. I forgot to mention the panel filter as well, had a piper one fitted when I got the belts done, dunno if it made a diff as I only drove car to the specialist at 2k revs as was worried about belts!

Bilberry stuff is really good, I would use nothing else now. Gentle and powerful all at once. I also have the Poorboys wheel sealant, but I have not used it yet, new wheels monday though so will break it out for that!

Yeah the BMC CDA is megabucks, i won't be buying one as its a fair chuck towards ITBs or a supercharger.

Re: My Clio 172 Cup.
The induction noise is pretty good when they are standard. Even mine makes a decent noise with the 1.2 airbox. No idea if the inlets make a difference to the noise tho

Re: My Clio 172 Cup 25/05/11 New Wheels, Steering Wheel, Mats
Yesterday was a good day for my Clio, a car I have been waiting for at salvage finally cleared so I could raid it for bits.
The steering wheel in mine was absolutly shot to pieces, as is very commom in these. The one at the salvage had a nicely retrimmed one though, so in it goes!
Before:
After:
Also had a set of 172 Cup Mats in it, so I had those, complete with boot mat!
Last but not least I treated the car to a new set of wheels on monday, the tyres were well past their best on my standard wheels and I was not happy with the paint job on the wheels either. So I ordered a set of Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s, in 15inch. The drop in size improves the handling on these. It does need lowering now!

looks very nice,
would have liked if reno fitted a better head unit to these though, make them feel bit more special inside
what you think?

Re: My Clio 172 Cup 25/05/11 New Wheels, Steering Wheel, Mats
Not really into audio tbh, I did put a different headunit in it, but i came out the next day, I prefer the OEM look tbh. There is a higher quality one in other models, the Cup got a boggo cd player, it does have a decent dash display and steering wheel controls too, I have also added a aux in so I can plug phone or mp3 player in, so it does everything I want it too. I may upgrade the speakers at some point, it has factory tweeters so componants would be a nice upgrade. All that said, this car is so loud that a stereo is a little pointless anyway.

Shaun, nah, in the end it seemed mad to spend £600 when I already had tyres, these were £350.
Maxxy - It was yours that made me want them tbh, and the lightness.
This was in my parking space this evening, very annoying!

Re: My Clio 172 Cup 25/05/11 New Wheels, Steering Wheel, Mats
Bought this today, should be here shortly. Its a TRS Towstrap for the front, nice and obvious for when the car is on track, if it needs to be hooked up in a hurry!
I have also removed the 172 badges from the pillars, it just says "cup" now, the 172 part is very fragile and they were already looking crap so off they came. I may redo them in vinyl at some point. Will also have to redo the h20 graphics stickers in orange now I reckon
