My Dilemma

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

Postby Kat on Fri Jul 06, 2001 9:25 am

I have the 1.8 16v, and it came as standard with the 60mm throttle body. Got the chance of having the bottom end of a mondeo engine as I believe the top part is the same. I want my car to be around 200 bhp can a 2.0l zetec be tuned to 200 bhp?? Or shall I save for a turbo conversion of some kind??? The only problem being that my boyfrind hates turbo's
Help please!!!! Advice welcomed!

I would like to see the answer to this one as i have an RS1800 and would like more power. I can also get access to a 2l zetek bottom end, or do i just get a turbo conversion for the thing and cumit a crime by doing this to an RS.

You can tune a 2l fa better than thge 1.8, there are more things on the market for the 2l.

What bhp are you putting out just now and what mods have you done to it.

My cars 130bhp now, with the mondeo bottom end it'll be 150bhp, once cammed up etc... hopefully about 200bhp (I'm hoping!)
The boyfriend doesn't trust turbo's, [ERRR] when they go wrong, they cost hundreds. I know that I can avoid this problem if I pay the money for a proper conversion, but thats £3000 I haven't got.

Okay, fitting a Mondeo 2.0L bottom end, using a gas-flowed head and hotter cams, plus a custom map should see you get around 150-170bhp. I know of a couple of 200bhp 2.0L normally aspirated engines, but they all run throttle bodies and a complete new engine management system, which costs a couple of grand. The benefits are no lag, potentially more reliability (over a turbo) and a wicked induction roar!

A turbo conversion need not cost £3000! Get an ERST S2 exhaust manifold, a T3, modified downpipe, plus a few other mods, and you're there! There is no reason that a well-looked after turbo engine is any less reliable that a heavily tuned non-turbo engine. Plus, you can get heaps more power from an 1800 or 2000 16V turbo....some people have seen 250+ bhp at the -wheels- from a 2.1 16V T3 setup in a FRST!!!

200bhp from a zetec 2.0l !!!!!

I would think it would take the lumpiest cams ever and the maximum amount of head work.
The 2.0l pinto can get 175bhp, i have heard that Colin McRae's old MK2 RS2000 has 190bhp and that is pushing it.

2.1 ZVH - with Turbo - nuff said!
Can't touch it!
Do you have any idea what 178.8mph feels like in a Fiesta? 2000 lb of pressure per square inch per second pushing back on your face. It feels like god himself is trying to rip the skin off your skull while someone lands a 747 on your chest.

Yeah, agreed - but.....reving to 9000 rpm (is that advisable on a 2 wd front wheel drive car??? - I mean (280 bhp after spending all that money) resulting in just shear wheel spin after revving that high!? + your gonna need a steel bullet proof bottom end (bit like mine may I add ;P ) to take the stress INIT!

What Snake is saying could be true on the dyno or rolling road (still find it very hard to believe that a normally aspirated engine would do 280 bhp mind you!) but in my opinion would not be a very good solution in real life.

Why? - or is it just out of curiosity?

I fancy getting a turbo conv. on my car and the last price I got was around £4K. I didn't really want to spend that much ya see (saving for a cossy as well), do you know where I can get a straight turbo conv. (1.8 zetec turbo) done and roughly how much it would cost ?

I'll get there.. got a few people looking out for bits and bobs for me.
I'll just 2.0L it for now, then look into turbo'ing once i've saved a bit of money. It's completely up to my b/f whether he wants to cam etc this engine, personally i'd rather him wait and save for it to be turbo'd.
