Ratspeed-Hadnt really thought of that. I have no idea on what imports are tested on, on the MOT. They all seem to have a third brake light, if its not required for the MOT then the foglight has found its new home  :aviator:

Done a few little bits on the mazda over the last couple of weeks

Started off with these

New gaiters from Mazda

Image

Old one

Image

With the gearlever off i found no oil in the turret :aaah:

Image

Filled up

Image

Plastic thing that goes on the bottom of the gearlever, old one on the right :oooh:

Image

New gaiters on

Image

Now the gearchange is smooth, and the transmission tunnel doesnt get rediculously hot inside the cabin :)

Next i decided to do a bit of tidying up of the engine bay, this is what it looked like before i started

Image

Found this before id even done anything, great start  Need to get a new hose then :(

Image

Removed the charocal cannister to save a few precious kg's

Image

Random stickered charocoal cannister gone :)

Image

Engine bay afterwards, fitted a new induction hose while i was there :aviator:

Image

Few more random interior bits removed

Image

Things to do at the moment are just relatively boring jobs really,

-Change engine oil and filter
-Change diff oil (would have done that today, but couldnt find my 23mm socket :( )
-Change cambelt
-Change spark plugs and HT leads
-Buy and fit rollcage
-Replace rear window for one that isnt taped together
:)

Strange thing to pick up one but isn't it odd to have oil in that 'turret'? I would have assumed grease.
I've got no idea about MX's but have never seen that before.

i was thinking that, i filled the gearbox from a skyline using that, but it doesnt fill it all the way to the brim :-?

might just be a mx5 thing :)

Yeah, guess the oil in the turret is an mx5 thing. Its seperate to the gearbox oil.

And yes, they do handle as good as everyone says. Well mine does now anyway, didnt when i first got it  Its basically a big go kart :aviator:

Postby hb69 on Sun Jan 24, 2010 11:13 pm

So the new year is here and the snow is gone, i can start to get a few bits done on the mazda before the track days and shows start.

Heres the list of things needing doing, copied from last year

-Change engine oil and filter
-Change diff oil (would have done that today, but couldnt find my 23mm socket )
-Change cambelt
-Change spark plugs and HT leads
-Buy and fit rollcage
-Replace rear window for one that isnt taped together

So with that list in mind i started getting bits together for a major service, heres what i got

Image

-Cambelt, tensioner and idlers
-Camshaft oil seals (no idea why they came in a Honda bag :-? )
-Radiator cap
-Fuel filter
-Oil filter and sump plug
-The hose that split in november and the hose that split at combe in september
-Rocker cover gasket
-Water pump

I got all those bits fitted, sooner the better really as i had no service history with the car :oooh: It runs sooo smoothly now, also got rid of all the play in the throttle pedal, so its ultra responsive.Something it was lacking last trackday

This weekend i had more time to spend doing bits and bobs

I finally got round to removing the annoying foglight perched on the bottom of the rear bumper. Ive relocated it to where one of the reversing lights was. Shows the 3 degrees of camber on the rear wheels in this picture too

Image

Looks a bit better and saves precious weight  I also removed some various bits of trim from the inside, all thats left now is the dash, which is as far as ill go with the interior weight removal. Will remove the dash to get rid of the uneeded wiring at some point though. I also found a switch for the front fogs, which is strange as it doesnt have front fogs, so i traced the wiring back, and it went nowhere. So out all that came, relays and all.

Bits removed today

Image

Another few precious kg's. While i was there i removed the speed limiter too. It wasnt an issue at combe, where i was reaching about 105mph on the straight, but on a track like silverstone, it would have slowed me down.

So the list of bits to do before the trackdays etc

-Change engine oil and filter. DONE
-Change diff oil (would have done that today, but couldnt find my 23mm socket )
-Change cambelt DONE
-Change spark plugs and HT leads
-Buy and fit rollcage
-Replace rear window for one that isnt taped together

Also, i managed to get a non a/c fanbelt off ebay for 99p,so the a/c will be coming out soon.Ive been told it weighs up to 17kg pipework and everything :aaah:

Will sort the spark plugs and HT leads next, then get a rollcage sorted.

Comments welcome as ever

Smo- come over whenever you like. Long term plans, not as such, id like a turbo on it though. It does suffer against the more powerful cars on the straights, just have to rely on the fact it can carry the speed through the corners to keep up

Toby-Always, will prob get a 4 branch soon, so if your up for helping...

Coming on well H! Turbo sounds like an awesome idea. Looks a lot better without that fog light  What speed are you reckoning on with the limiter removed?

Oh, and on a slightly unrelated note, can I book a passenger lap round combe in advance Henry? Just want to get in quick before Toby "Ride Whore" Andrews gets his oar in

Not sure what kind of speed it will reach now, the limiter was at 112mph/180 kph. Thats on all eunos's, might reach 115mph now

Well, Stevie B has already arranged with me to passenger on a few sessions, and the ride whore has asked for one too. So not sure where it leaves me, or even how many i can even afford to buy lol. Will have to see nearer to time :)

its apity the mazda 323 turbo engines were not as readily availablt, they are BP based so would slot stright into one of these, and have been proven up to 400 bhp with stock internals :)

Thanks Clark :)

Eunos is the Japanese version :aviator: Same in most ways to the mx5, except most eunos's came with lsd, and little bits here and there different. Basically the same though

Managed to spend the whole weekend working on the mazda, which made a welcome change. Started off with Toby coming over, then going to McDonalds for breakfast. After that got some cable ties, electrical connectors and heatshrink ready to sort the interior loom out and make it as lightweight as possible.

First things first, dash had to come out, which was really quite easy.

Image

So many things were attached to it behind. Took about an hour just cutting them free

Toby, not sure what to do with the dash now its out

Image

Start taking apart, of course

Image

Image

Everything, and i mean everything being removed thats not needed

Image

Bits from behind off, dash gone for surgery. Will be retaining the metal bar. It serves as the dash mount and also as a chassis brace

Image

Toby putting the dashboard on a diet

Image

What was left with the dash removed

Image

Wiring loom split open, wires everywhere :oooh:

Image

Wires and plugs etc removed for things i dont need/have

Image

Loom starting to go back together

Image

Heater blower motor removed. Never used it, extra weight.

Image

Dash going back in

Image

Dashboard refitted in its new lightweight form

Image

We secured the much smaller and tidier wiring loom to the metal brace bar. Doesnt hang down at all now, which used to annoy me. Need some gauges to fill those vent holes though

All the removed items, 1 bag of wires, 2 bags of soundproofing :aaah:

Image

Weigh in:

Sound proofing - 1kg
Dash trim - 1.5kg
Heater blower motor - 2kg
Wires, plugs etc - 250 grams

So nearly 5kg removed this weekend. Not bad really. Im pretty sure that there isnt much more i can remove, aside from the a/c, which will be going soon. Then ill start adding weight again with the rollcage and hard top, and more bracing  Managed to take it out for a short run too, which i havent done really for about 4 months :oooh: Forgot how good it sounds above 5k, all the way up to 7.5k. Certainly feels more responsive compared to the last time i went for a run in it :aviator:

Big thanks to Toby as usual, owe you a passenger session or two for sure :D
