Right. issue. i did bring this up in the technical forum but i dont see how i can do it. the nut will not fit through any of the holes, do i need to cut a small section out to be able to get the nut in? i know that might weaken the chassis leg slightly but thats all i can think of?
Image
does it need bolting from this side also?
Image

thanks, Ben

You need Hex rivnuts and a Rivnut gun to insert them. All the hexagonal holes in the shell are for captive fittings.

why not just drill out the holes needed right through the leg and fit longer bolts, washers and nuts?

its a bit tricky jonny. ive ordered the m10 rivnuts i need. basically jony id need to cut out a bit to be able to get the nut in. the bolts i have are pretty long anyway. but i dont want to weaken the structure in anyway. i will see how these work out :)

also getting my calipers re done, zinc plated to be precise as the standard finish is already showing signs of rust!!!! my own fault for getting the cheaper finish :( learnt my lesson now! and so's my bank balance.

Shame about the brakes, tbh Ben, you don't need a front mount

pm rhinopower or ~nomad~, they fitted a front mount to a popular, so would know what it takes

cheers jony, my own fault tbh! yeah i understand i dont 100% need it but i dont want to skimp :P i have it so i may as well fit it bud. would be silly not to. ill see how the hexnuts do when they arrive and decide from there.

Could you not make one of the holes you dont need big enough so youuu can hold the nut the other side?? or am i missing the point altogether?? also, that purple door, you dont happen to know the paint code for it??

its a bit more tricky than that. with 3 of the holes, yes. but one you cant because there is some sort of reinforcement within the chassis leg.

its nto actually purple bud, its that paint that changes when its in different light bud! ill try find out though mate if thats what youre after?

Yeah cheers mate. Getting my cub90 sprayed would be easier if i had a colour to give the guy :) lol. I see what you mean about your problem now. Maybe drilling a new hole might be the only way??

rightio, will let you know when i find out!

yes, well i will see how the hex rivnuts do and if not, ill get drilling!

no updates as of yet as im still waiting on my flywheel. in the meantime ive ordered some vht high temp paint to spray the head as it lets the rest of the engine down. will also be recieving my ashley system in the next couple of weeks hopefully so should all be coming together soon.

also sending my calipers off again to have a polymer finish to them, no rust this time hopefully

thanks, Ben

IMO I would of drilled right the way through the chassis leg, then a good square plate either end (washer stylee) to spread the load on the bolt, also if you we're really worried you could always get (forget the name) tubes that slot over the bolt to reinforce it inside the leg so it's solid all the way through, but as mark has said is say the safest and best finish would be to use rivnuts, just my opinion mate , Liking the progress and good to see someone with the right attitude to it! do it right and you only need to so it once ;)

Just a tip, but make sure the regular Rivnuts you buy for the circular holes have a serrated edge. Some come completely smooth and as you can imagine, they are as useless!

Re: MY fiesta si - wee update 11/10

Postby ben17southport on Thu Oct 11, 2012 9:00 pm

evening shanters...

a little update tonight. will begin with the rocker cover...

Image

hammered black (not majorly hammered as its only hammered hammertie but it gives a nice slight hammered effect ;)

will be getting either black or grey ht leads too but the red ones will do for now.

managed to get hold of an rs1800 fuel rail wiring box (big thanks to AWOL)
will my 1.4si wiring be ok? eg do all the connections i need look like they're there? i will get to that when i whack it in tomorrow so its just to check.
Image

my torque wrench arrived. draper jobby. has been calibrated etc with paper work to prove its all in good working order.
Image

and finally, my ferodo pads and disks arrived!
Image
free air freshener (for my wait?)
Image
and one with them behind the wheels just to get the feeel for it :teehheee:
Image

now onto the more important s**t!

i sent my calipers back to get them with a polymer coating as its the best and most durable finish they offer. sadly they dont do silver so i chose black. now yes, you can say that's a boring choice on my behalf but i thought logically. wont show dirt as easily and it will look oem'ish!

my theme will be black and grey/anthracite etc etc. boring but clean cut imo.

which leads me onto my next purchase (which will be at the end of this month)... samco gun metal grey hoses.

thought i may as well, spend enough so far so i dont want to cut corners. so they will be ordered in due course.

will be fitting my front mount tomorrow. i cba forking out 50 odd squid on a rivnut tool, so ive got a method that may or may not work. if not it will be a straight through nut and bolt jobby.

still waitng on the flywheel so watch this space.

peace & love

day i decided to get the gearbox cradle and tow eye sorted in anticipation for getting the flywheel back... firstly ground the tow eye back to bare metal and just wire brushed the cradle (forgot to get a pic of it bare)
Image
Image
decided to stone chip the cradle then after a few coats i taped it off in preperation for the ash black on the toe eye tomorrow.
Image

exhaust system is on its way :)

couldnt get the rivnuts fixed to the chassis leg so ordered m12x130 and m12x80 (thanks to awek for letting me know sizes etc) along with a 12mm heavy duty drill bit to bolt it on direct.

then its up up up, and away :D:D:D lols

Postby ben17southport on Fri Oct 19, 2012 8:59 pm

alright chaps

been a progressive day today. as i couldnt make it to Jams funeral i thought i'd pay my respect by doing plenty on the si :)

so i set about getting the holes sorted for the engine mount (what a pain it was!)

to cut a long story short, some of the holes dont line up perfectly, one of the bolts comes out into the wheel arch and i realised i had missed one hole that needed a bolt. but the whole thing is very secure so no need to worry :) i ground the inner side of the chassis rail to bare metal and stone chipped over it.

Image

Image

Image

then came onto the flywheel

skimmed
Image
torqued up and ready to go
Image
clutch
this is what the 'alignment tool' did for me
Image
by hand (it looks out but its the angle of the photo.
Image
exhaust came today :) huge thanks to tony aka tonwah for getting this to us
Image
manifold test fitted
Image

and how it lies atm :)
Image

and just a quick question (is this release bearing the correct way round? does it need greasing at all?
Image

thank you, Ben

Release bearing looks right to me mate, no grease needed, its pretty much in contact with the fingers most the time even when the pedal is depressed

that skimmed flywheel wont give you no issues now, clutch will last longer now too

i bet that drilling was a right pain in the arse, specially that bolt near the wheel enclave :aaah:

the "wing" part of the mount needs a bracket that bolts to the outer chassis leg, but tbh its only a stabilizer, and not particually needed

great work, bet your learning much and having a blast?
