Re: my rs mini restore
Done a bit today when it eventually stopped raining and a bit yesterday afternoon wanted to spend a day on it yesterday but as things happen i only had about 2 hours so i got about a day out of the two but I managed to finsh the quarter welds and tidy a few bits up. But i thought while i am at it i will take a look under the carpets just out of curiousity and suprise suprise passenger side footwell not looking to good where all the seams meet toghether so that's tomorrows plan. I only initally took the carpets back to have a look at the inner sills which both require plating. Will have a tidy update tomorrow hopefully. But i am thinking now is it worth taking the dash board off to have a better look because the amount of rot lurking behind it

Re: my rs mini restore
Got a bit more done yesterday and today. Started yesterday on the passenger footwell where I had discovered a bit of rot when removing the carpets to sort the inner sill.
So I repaired that area. Not the tidiest of jobs but it is now solid and who will see it anyway.
Then I started applying a little filler to all the little dents it has picked up over the last 2 years or so of hanging around in a small garage
I will tomorrow sort out the driver side inner sill as there is rot here where the crappy sunroof drain pipes have done they're worst. I have already sorted the passenger drain hole out by drilling a hole through the sill and pulling it through. As excursion nicely pointed out to me there is ample there and that they do not need extending. So I will be replicating that on the drivers side
That's all that is left to weld then is the new rear corner which I am still waiting to arrive in the post, a little piece on the chassis near where the rear beam is bolted up on the passenger side and a little plate where the sill meets the floor also where the rear beam bolts up on the driver side. I can then move it around the corner to my mates garage then to use his 2 poster to tidy up the patches I have put on the floor and the sill I fitted. Was hoping to have moved it around there on the weekend but as I got more into this I found more rot than what I had anticipated that had to be dealt with before it comes back and bites me soon. All in all though I am still on target I think to get it in primer this weekend. Then it will be a case of rub it back mask it up and apply some nice shiney mercury grey paintwork. Just need to find some green side mouldings then. I stupidly sold my set a while back as i didn't really like them but as I see more and more of them on here they are starting to grow on me. I already have the bumper strips which I won on ebay for 10.40 for both front and rear (bargain) just need to find the sides but as it is getting closer to show season the price of them goes through the roof and I will probably end up paying stupid money for a set. If anyone has a set they are willing to part with please speak up
That is it for today but will hopefully get a fair chunk done tomorrow

Re: my rs mini restore
Dirty and messy is an understatement
I have got quite a bit done in the last couple of days what with this lovely wether we have had. I have now got solid floor, sills, inner sills, footwells, chassis and pretty much everything else. I am still awaiting that driver side rear arch repair panel for the rear corner which is the only thing holding me back from putting it in primer. I have one weld to make on the front where the floor meets the footwell underneath and thats it. I was quite supsrised as to the extent that it had rotted. As i looked at one thing i noticed another and so on and i have done some cutting out i know. I have gone through 3 reels of 0.6 and half a reel of 0.8 which i found easier to weld with( but i put that down to my inexperience ) and 3 bottles of gas. I would have had a big bottle delivered if I had known because at 13 pound a pop the little bottles have turned out to be quite exspensive . But all in all It as been a big learning curve for me. I have always got bodyshops to do the work for me but being short of funds and reading other peoples threads on here has given me the inspiration to give it a go myself and i am glad i did because it is quite rewarding just knowing that I have done it all myself. I have welded all the seams where possible for piece of mind and some extra stiffness to my chassis which with all the rust i have cut out was very much needed . I have used the thickest plate possible where possible and am quite confident that it will be solid for many years to come. I gave myself 2 weeks to get the work done and i have pretty much acheived that albeit with the scars to prove. Welding upside down with a t-shirt on is not recommended . Just need to get it covered in paint now and underseal the underneath again. I will be pumping my sills with wax and any cavity i can get wax into will also be getting the treatment. I have got both my sunroof drain pipes exiting through my sills and out so to minmize the amount of water going in them. It has been proving to be quite effective aswell because the amount of water that passes through them is suprising to say the least no wonder they rot the way they do. I will get some pics up tomorrow as its my last day off and i have been to busy and dirty to take some.
Anyone recommend a good wax for pumping into the cavitys

Looking good mate!!!!
Try Dinitrol Cavity wax, works really well, or a trick i use is get some tins of waxoil, put it on the gas hob for a few mins. When its warm, shake it around then spray it into the cavities etc with a cavity tube, (the ones with the fanned end to spread the wax). Doing it like this gets rid of the need for thinners to thin it, because it cools thicker than when hot!!! .

I have got 3 1litre tins of hammerite waxoil underseal which when hot goes very runny do you think i could heat it like you said and use an oil can squirter to get it in there.

Re: my rs mini restore
Be better with a compressor and line mate as it would @power@ it into the chassis. When it cools it does thicken considerably, just imagine what butter does in the sun, then when you put it back into the fridge!! Just make sure you dont set fire to it, and also shake it aswell, as it melts from the outside in!!

Re: my rs mini restore
Have just about got it to stage where it is ready to round the corner for some primer. Got fed up waiting for my rear corner piece to turn up so i welded a patch over the 2 holes and cut about 3 inches off of the whole back end. It had sarted to rust at the bottom so made sense to cut it off you can't see it anyway so there is no need for it to be there
Have put all filler on and got it ready for stopper. Everything has been rubbed back so it is pretty much there or there abouts except the boot that still needs a bit of rubbing back.
Have tidied up all my wleds underneath and applied a generous amount of hammerite with added waxoil underseal to the whole underneath. All arches have also had another coat of the stuff just for good measure.
My GRS intercooler is with a mate of mine from college who is removing the old brackets grinding the welds flat and welding on new tabs which are 120mmx50mmx5mm thick. The tabs which where originally on there where pretty flimsy to say the least I have also had him make a support bracket out of aluminium angle plate which will support it from the bottom so it will make it very secure. Would have loved to of had it in primer this weekend but there are just not enough hours in the day. So it will roll around the corner tomorrow evening so that it can be prepped for primer and then with a bit of luck covered in a nice new coat of mercury by the weekend. All that is left to do then is refit the interior. Change my rear beam as i reversed into a big lump of concrete some motnhs ago which has bent something which i can't see what but my driverside rear wheel is leaning in quite a lot at the top. Get it mot'd and then a good old set up as it hasn't had one for quite sometime and has been sitting around for a couple of years now. Have got some goodies which I have been collecting aswell so they need fitting and its ready to get out there and visit a few shows.
Here's a few pics of where i am at now
Comments welcome fella's good or bad

Re: my rs mini restore
I have almost got it to spraying point. All the body has been flatted backed and is as smooth as baby's arse. I had left a bit of what looked like a little bit of rust appearing around my sunroof until i dropped it down to the ground and it was a bit worse than I thought, but I have groung out the rot and filled over it. Just need to stopper it tomorrow as it is supposed to be fine and then it is getting sprayed either next Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. My mate who was going to spray it came to look to see how I was getting on told me that after all the effort I have put into it that he wouldn't want to ruin it and spray it
Don't get me wrong his work is not the best but for free I could have lived with it until I am in a better position but he said that whenever he got anything big like full reprays and what not he has his mate karl do it for him. He told me that he pays the bloke a 100 pounds per day and that I could use his services for a 50. I am a very happy chappy as this bloke is a sprayer for jaguar and has been there for 15 years and my mate reckons he is awesome so for 5o quid I am hopefully getting a first class spray job. I have only had to buy the paint which cost another 60 so I have got 1 bargain of a spray job. My mate reckons I have done a fantastic job and for my first time he was very impressed. So next weekend it will be all nicey nice. I will post some pics up tomorrow when I have finished the sunroof area. All that is left then is to
Find a rear beam or zetec s/puma 1
Find a set of green side mouldings
And then she will be ready for its MOT when I have put all the little bits back together
FITP here I come

It is still cheap mate as the bloke sprays for my mate and i am only paying for half a day of his wages which is 5o notes. All in all with paint, laquer and what not it comes in at around 250 notes so happy days. I certainly ain't complaining
