My RST - nearly come to that time...
Well - it's been a while since I updated this post but I thought it was about time I did.
I've spent quite a considerable amount of time on the car over the past few weeks to actually get it running.
I've just ordered a full set of new 10mm HT leads and king lead as well as a set of Cosworth spark plugs.
I'm also looking into buying some thermotec sleeves for the HT leads to help prevent them from getting heat damage from the turbo and the exhaust manifold.
Once my Dad gets back from his holiday I'll be up to his place and re-soldering alot of the wiring that is looking a bit on the dodgy side as well as sorting out my fuse box!
The other thing I'm going to have to sort out is the phase sensor bracket - it requires extra strengthening braces because it flexes quite easily knocking the sensor out of line with the pulley which it takes the signal from. This is causing the tickover on the car to suddenly zoom up to 3000rpm when sitting in traffic - very annoying as people look around and see me in the car and think I'm being a chive!
I washed and polished the car today - still got quite a bit I want to get cleaned including polishing all the glass up but I get bored very quickly so left it at just a wash and polish of the bodywork today
Having gone around the whole bodywork I'm really pleased with how it's all holding up, obviously keeping it in the garage is the best thing for it as it's a 15 year old car but I'm dead chuffed that I bought such a good example in the first place as I've seen some really rot RSTs compared to mine
Cheers,
Andy

Lovely stuff! It'll be a joy to get the sponge and bucket out again, I envy you that! Is your bonnet cut at the front? i.e. is the vertical distance between the bumper and bonnet bigger than it used to be? Just looks nice and open in the pics, hadn't noticed it before. Looks lovely dude Reckon you'll still be coming up here at all over summer? The videos of the three of us tearing it up round here would be keepers!!

James - the bonnet isn't cut, but it was getting late in the afternoon so was dark out the front of the garage (East facing front of my house) the angle of the car compared to the level of the garage I was sitting in when taking the pic further accentuates the gap as well (the car looks far meaner at that angle than it does when level!).
I should definitely be making my way up to you mate - will have to make at least a weekend of it, I don't want to commit to any date completely until I've ironed out all the running problems that I'm currently having (not too many now!).
Anyone else notice the mismatched ride height on the back of the car - I must have done that when running on Cossie rims, it looks like the car is one turn lower on the passenger side!
Cheers,
Andy

Ah yeah it is vaguely noticeable now you mention it...nothing 3 minutes and a C-spanner can't fix
I know what you mean bout waiting till the car's "fully reliable" (is that like "intelligent chives"? ). Mine hasn't run for more than fifteen seconds yet, so I'm with you on the wait-and-see thing!

muz :u keeping the same wheels andy or got some differnt ones in mind? tidy looking turbo tho
I'm hoping to change the wheels to 15" OZ Super Turismo's - I've got lots of other more pressing things which need doing though so they're on the bottom of my list!
It's handy though as I'll want spare sets of wheels for track days!

Andy - I had a quality thought last night!! The height difference will probably level out when you get in the car, hence perfecting weight distribution! Pretend you did it on purpose

- I think I might settle it up though because the springs are pretty hard so don't drop with even my hefty weight that much!
I received the boost gauge hose today mate - I'll get that money sent out for services rendered very soon!
I can't wait to get fitting the next few bits to go onto the car - got some Motorcraft Denso PP8 spark plugs as well

I think all Magnecor leads are branded as 'racing' - but these are 10mm leads and I've got a matching 10mm king lead to go with it, which is better than the standard thinly insulated 8mm ERST leads I'm using at the moment.
I bought that hook board for hanging up car keys but I'm not sure if that's a good idea now with most car theft from a house taking place after a burglary!
Cheers,
Andy

After I'd finished mowing the lawn I thought I'd at least stick the new leads onto the car and then took a few pics
New Ignition leads and coil lead:
Finally installed my Tweeters after over 2 years! :
A couple of shots of the front of the car:
A better view of the whole car - please ignore the poor excuse for a car that my neighbour drives (it's quite fitting as she is old! ):
Finger's crossed this weekend the car will be fully operational again with all wiring problems sorted - the next stage after that will be to change back to coilpack ignition
Stu @ Motorsport Developments' coilpack driver setup for Cossie management
Woohoo - I don't feel so bad about changing to Cossie management now as it seems to have opened up some more doors for me after all!
Cheers,
Andy

You're definitely starting to do a few more things yourself these days aren't you Andy? It's incredible the amount you learn, and the confidence and thought processes you gain in just a week of hard slog on your car. Few questions:
Why isn't my boost gauge in yet?
Did Grove leave the AMAL valve zip tied onto that boost hose? Can you hard-mount it somewhere?
I read over your post in general about the Cossie changeover, very good news! Not wanting to jinx you or anything, but things are looking pretty good for your car now. Looking back (only a week or two, I know, but still....) I guess all the problems you had just HAVE to be expected with something like this. As we all know, poo happens, and it's almost always some simple thing that needs checking. Hope things stay solid enough for you to make it up here!!
P.S. hooks for keys are the worst idea ever, don't do that!!!

Yeah - why do you think the key holder hasn't been mounted up!
I've got a really good method for stopping keys from being stolen - lose them so that you don't know where they are yourself (I'm always losing my keys just as I'm about to leave! )
I'm definitely getting more confident with working on the car - I have learnt a hell of alot about how engines and engine management work, in particular Fiesta RST's and Cossie's!
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks mate - I know it does seem crazy that I was thinking of breaking it but the engine really is the best thing about the beast, everything else is just 'nice to have'
The EFI manifold work was done by Gadget - he used the top half of a 1.4 Si (PTE) manifold and bored the insides out to match the size of the Fiesta RST/XR2i manifold internals, they had the Ford logo. All of that and the inlet manifold, distributor cap and throttle body were all shotblasted and polished - they do need regular attention though and I've been a bit lazy so it's all looking a bit dull in the engine bay pic I took.
Cheers,
Andy

I got rid of the RS2k rims because the spokes caught the Cossie 4x4 calipers (15" is plenty big enough just caliper clearance from the RS2k spoke designs - which is why I plumped with these 15" rims as something to get the car around on whilst trying other different rims out).
The engine is a Specialised Engines 1900 block using my existing FRST head with Kent CVH34 cam.
Cheers,
Andy

Cool stuff andy i took a look at Stu's conversion as soon as it was posted very nice bit of kit.
Btw i have a nearly new coil pack sitting here doing nothing if you want it???? Its still on the fiesta bracket that holds it to the head for a cvh n all.
Looking to get my focus leads under my bonnet so may have another one kicking about soon as i need to get a Focus Coil pack as the leads are different.

Thanks mate - I thought you might be taking a look at that post when it came up, it's a really neat setup!
I was thinking of calling on you about any spare coil packs with brackets - you're a life saver!
I should be going to the FordSport meet on Sunday - are you going because I can exchange some readies for your troubles mate, it's the least I can do after the help you gave me with the car those few weeks ago!
Atif - not sure when I'll be taking it to the track mate, sometime soon hopefully and will definitely take it out on track at Ford Fair if the FordSport stand are organising that again?!?!?
I'm going to pick the cabby back up this evening - new GMax suspension, new wheel bearings, sump and rocker cover gasket sorted, full service including filters (no more oil leaks! ) and the exhaust downpipe all welded up Can't wait to take it for a cruise with the top down

it's all well and good updating the car thread, but i wanna how Andy's garden project is getting on! Nah seriously, it's looking great Andy. I'm glad you've stuck with it and pushed through the hard times - there's been the odd time I'm sure!
Be nice to see it sitting on a different style of wheel as I'm not overly keen on those, but who cares when the rest of the car is styled to perfection.

I'll have to get updating the garden project post soon - there has been some progress with it, with more to come over the weekend!
As for the wheels - I'm only looking to replace them with another set of 15" rims for handling/price and will also be keeping the current wheels and tyres as spares whilst running a set of cut slicks on the OZ Superleggeras
Should look something like this but of course on my car instead of bezo's!
That will have to wait until funds allow

Thanks buddy - you're a star!
Not sure if I'll be there in the cabby or the turbo - the cabby will cost me less! It's alot better now with the new suspension on it!
Post about cabby here
Cheers,
Andy

I've got a few new pics of the heat-sleeves for my ignition leads.
Only 3 of the leads need it really as spark plug for number 4 is all shielded off by the other leads coming in and the charge carrier, so I used 2 sleeves on the lead for number 1 as it stretches all the way across the top of the exhaust manifold over the turbo!
Whilst the car sits in the garage I have it plugged into this little baby
Gonna take it out for a test drive in a bit and see how it goes
Cheers,
Andy

Cool cool I'm starting to look into shielding more things from the heat....it's really surprised me just how hot the Zetec gets I'm going to have to look to move the rad and intercooler forward, wrap the turbo and insulate some wiring. It's gettin hot in herrre

Aiii - I'm looking into getting the panels in the bonnet chromed up or something - the front of the bonnet steams when rain gets on it if the turbo's hot!
It's amazing how much heat the turbo kicks out - when you get yours running properly take the car out for a blast and then when cooling the engine down watch the coolant temps go up! Moving the rad and cooler forward is a good idea James - both of mine have been moved and angled quite a bit to keep away from the turbo for heat and clearance reasons
