I met Jano at Bruntingthorpe for TOTB qualifying and he let me borrow his Pectel monitor (hooked it all up for me as well) so I could find out what was going wrong with my car.

Everything was checking out fine (apart from not getting the last 3 degrees travel of throttle - I'm not too fussed about that but will be getting my throttle linkage modified to sort that out) until I hit a bump and the cam sensor went missing (showed up on the Pectel monitor).

Jano then told me it's a common problem with people running L8 Cossie management conversions and he then showed me the Cossie management setup on his XR3 Turbo - much much nicer and definitely works.

He put me onto Stu @ MSD to order the Cossie CPS and sent back my vernier pulley machined up with the bits I ordered the same day as he received my money order and pulley in the post

So yeah - he seems ok to me!

Bit of an update for you today and it's all pretty much good news

I went to the post office and picked up the bits from Jano that he sent me back.

Vernier pulley is now machined down to help fit the spacer plate (something that wasn't done before and should really have been with the management conversion).

New bracket for holding the phase/cam sensor in place - has 2 spring loaded mounting points meaning the sensor can be raised/lowered to within 3 thousandths of an inch - which is nice

Laser cut pulley for correct timing markings. I need to speak to Jano tomorrow to find out exactly where the prongs should be as the old disc had obviously moved meaning we're a bit clueless about that at the mo.

The new cam/phase sensor should be arriving from Motorsport Developments on Wednesday - I need that for the MOT as the car will not tickover without it.

Simon took the head off the car today and luckily there hasn't been that much damage. 2 things were obviously wrong - timing had obviously caused one of the valves on number 1 to misshape and so Simon has now sorted all of that out - all the damage looks to be due to timing.

Also - where the wiring loom for the engine goes onto the end stud on the inlet manifold it looks like I didn't do it up tight enough and it's worked loose causing an air leak!

All is fixed now and I shall get the car up and running properly on Wednesday again - I should be picking the car up either tomorrow evening or Wednesday during the day

Oh yeah - and for the record absolutely no damage to any of the pistons or block

For once I have some good news about the Turbo!

2. How did he "sort it"?
3. "All the damage" - what else was damaged?
4. Surely the engine should've been immaculately timed, having been to Grove??? Isn't that a pretty major issue that needs taking up with them Andy?
5. Pics of this place where the wiring loom bolts on? Not sure where you mean Seems odd that a loom-securing bolt would go into a hole that would cause a leak if undone??

the usual me would have laid into the supplier of andy's conversion big style as andy well knows, but i know who did it and it does seem such as shame its turned out like this, but only andy can work out how good/bad it was for what ever their arrangement was

Always a problem when buying someone else's work. I bought an Excursion-built engine in my Zetec Turbo, as I know he knows way too much for one human head, and felt confident in his abilities. Haven't been proved wrong yet, touch wood

Gadget's done a few of these, though I'm not sure if Andy's was one of the earlier or later evolutions of his Cosworth conversions. No-one's perfect, but that doesn't reduce the annoyance and cost when things go wrong, I for one can appreciate that!! (TDI, broken gearbox etc...) All we can do is hope it's fixed for good now, and await pics

The car was running ok with the conversion that Gadget carried out - and it has been quite some time since it's all been fitted that the problems have occurred.

The work Gadget has done was good generally and for the money I paid it's a really good job with alot of time that's gone into it (complete modifying of the loom etc.). You've got to remember that Gary doesn't operate as a proper trader, it's more for a bit of cash and because of that the price is cheap! He has helped me loads with getting the parts needed for running it and he managed a quicker turnaround on getting the conversion done than most garages I can speak of (whilst doing all of the work in the evening's after a full day's work!) so I won't have a bad thing said against him.

The problems I've been having do need to be sorted though and Jano Oddkidd has taken it upon himself to become the 'expert' at Cossie management conversions on CVH's and other cars etc. So when I bumped into him at Bruntingthorpe and he showed me exactly where my car was failing it made sense to get the parts from him to take a slightly different tack on the setup used on my car - very pleased I did too.

I'm pretty sure that it's the misfiring that's been happening with the car for such a long time now that has caused the valve damage that has occurred - so would be unfair of me to point fingers at Grove or Gadget, the car has run brilliantly for the majority of the time and the times put down at Brunters whilst everything was not 100% just show the potential the car's got

I didn't manage to get photo's of the head whilst it was all apart as I wasn't there at the time - I'll take pictures of the car and engine setup throughout the week though.

I'll be picking it up on Wednesday in the morning

I spoke to Simon during the day today and he said the Turbo was ready to be picked up so I picked the keys up off of him and went over to Eastbourne to drive it back.

The new phase sensor plate isn't in the right position and neither is the old cam sensor as it's not meant for use with the bracket I now have. The new sensor is arriving tomorrow (hopefully) from MSD, once I have that I'll be able to stick it on and find out from Gadget, Grove and Jano Oddkidd where the timing plate should actually be located.

The car ran like an absolute bag of poo on the way back and it really doesn't seem to be much different from when the engine was taken apart before, so it would seem that the cam sensor plate moved position during the day at Bruntingthorpe or the mapping itself just isn't right.

The pistons seem to show that the car is running incredibly rich and runs fine when the engine is cold but as soon as the temp gauge reaches about quarter of the way up the car starts misfiring and generally misbehaving with the tickover.

Having done so much to the car to try and fix the never-ending problems it's really hard to find anything mechanically or electronically that's wrong with the car, so I'm going to have to take it to Grove Garage next week (if they're free at all) to let them check through it all.

Sadly this means that I'm probably not going to be taking the car on track at Silverstone this weekend - it's just not worth damaging the engine again with it running the way it is

Looks like I've got a really tall order ahead getting the car through an MOT - I highly doubt that the emissions will be safe

That bracket looks good Sounds as though Grove need to run it all through properly, get the timing and fuelling right...give it a proper setup really, like the first time, or at least like it should've been done Hard to tell how much of the running issues are down to them really. It's totally possible though Andy. Mine takes full throttle and high revs etc with no issues (I'm now confident enough in it to use both!), idles well and emissions are fine, and the fuel consumption's a great surprise All that's on crummy EEC-IV, so on Cossie stuff you should be laughing when it's re-done with a decent bracket etc
