My si project.....*Update 05/05/14 - Service and paint*
Hey! time I posted a thread about my car and the work I have done on it since I bought it!
Sorry about the essay but I thought I might as well put it all on here together!
I have owned the car for two years now and as soon as I bought it, I took it off the road to restore it.To begin with, I rebuilt the whole of the back end of the car including removing the back axle and anti-roll bar, cleaning them up and painting them, followed by removing the petrol tank and replacing it with a brand new one from ford. I replaced all of the bushes on the back axle and anti-roll bar with brand new ford ones and also replaced the rear shock absorbers with brand new ford ones. I also removed the rust from and painted (with hammerite) the spare wheel holder.
Following this, I sorted out the brakes by replacing the front callipers and discs with new ford items, replacing the rear cylinders and also putting on new break shoes and front pads, as well as adjusting the handbrake. I also put new break pipes all round.
Following this, with the help of my dad, I removed the engine and replaced a long list of parts, including new steering rack, new track rod ends, new front suspension arms and legs, new CV boots, new anti-roll bar linkages, new clutch, new water pump, new power steering pump, new plugs and HT leads, repaced all of the seals in the engine (oil seals etc), new alternator, new starter motor, new heater matrix, new cat and downpipe, new hoses, new fuel filter, new air filter, new lambda sensor. I also wet and dried and polished the rocker cover, and removed all rust from the engine bay and battery stand and painted it.
Once the engine was back in, I concentrated on the bodywork. My dad welded on two new sills (including inner sills), along with a new front and back panel and also two new rear wheel arches. My dad also welded some patches on the floorpan where it was particularly rusty. The rest of the floorpan was de-rusted using a power file and then painted with black hammerite. Any parts that hadn't been replaced on the car were also painted with black hammertie. To finish off, I smoothed the new sills and arches into the origional bodywork with filler, sauced a new passenger door and tailgate (as the ones on the car were dented/rusty) and fitted them to the car. Finally, the whole car was resprayed gloss black by my dad.
We finished the job three weeks before ford fair 2008, got the car MOT'd and taxed and drove it to the ford fair and displayed it on the fiesta-si.com stand. I am now going to enjoy driving it for the next two years untill I am 21 and can afford the insurance to drop a two litre silver top zetec engine into the car.
Heres some pics of the car when I got it:
Work in progress:
New petrol tank
New front panel
New back panel

Since I finished it in july, have put a full cat back stainless scorpion exhaust on it:
All comments welcome!
Cheers

Love how clean it looks now
As said on FSI desperately needs lowering, once you have done it you will love it on a whole new level and you won't regret it

Re: My si project!
Small update:
I've been looking for a FRST bonnet for my car for a while now, and finally managed to find one relatively close to me yesterday so drove to scunthorpe today to pick it up!
I'm really pleased! Its in really good condition and still has the sound deadening on too. Just have to spray it up now and get it on the fez, can't wait
Some pics
Let me know what you think

Re: My si project!
So you could afford a bonnet, but not to get your car lowered
How much it set you back?
Didn't realise they ever came with sound deadening though?

Re: My si project!
Lol! Cheers mate! Yea, it took a while but was definitely worth it. It kind of builds on itsself, you replace something and then you see something else next to it looking abit worn so you replace that too, and so it goes on until you have replaced just about everything!
It was a work of art getting the car onto those blocks, basically we jacked it up as far as the jack would go, then put it on axel stands, then put the jacks on blocks and did it again and again until it was at the height seen in the pics. It gave brilliant access to the whole of the underneath of the car and made replacing the sills and arches really easy as they were at chest height.
What car are you restoring mate?

looks like a mega good effort,
paint looks a little flat in the reflection shots,
have you rubbed it all back with something like 3000 grit and polished up with a mop??
think it would enhance the finish

Cheers mate! I'm going to lower it as soon as I can afford to. Any suggestions as to the best set up to use? I want to go roughly -35mm.

Have rubbed the whole car down with a polishing machine, but not sure if it was 3000 grit. That pic with the reflection in the boot lid is flat as I had to do a bit of touching up there and hadn't rubbed it down yet. Cheers for the advice, may give it another going over

Yea mate, was relatively easy really. We set up a spray tent in our garage and made sure it was spotless then did the spraying with a relatively small compressor from machine mart (not quite sure on the size). The whole car got about four coats and has come up brilliantly! No real troubles at all!

Yea, deffo go for it mate! Its not that hard once you get the flow going and get the hang of exactly how to hold the gun (angle, distance etc). We only got a couple of runs but they wet and dried out really easily!
I would reccomend trying on something first tho to get the hang of it. We had a door lying around so used that to get used to how to do it.
Make sure the car is well rubbed down before you do it too

Re: My si project!
Would be pretty risky spraying outside tbh mate. It would have to be an extremely still day and not too cold or too hot either. We sprayed the bonnet separately when the spray tent wasn't totally up in the garage, and the paint ended up with bits in it, even though it was in the garage (which was really pretty clean) when we sprayed it. Had to sand down and re-do.
You would have to have the floor under the car clinically spotless and no trees etc anywhere near the car, but still wouldn't really recommend it.
With regards to mixing, can't quite remember the quantities but am pretty sure it was a 50:50 mix of thinners and paint, but not totally sure.

Yea, you mite have to end up getting it done professionally. Maybe if you give them your paint they will do it cheaper and if all the prep is done aswell that would knock the price down.
