My Zetec Turbo Build *Abandoned Project*
Yeah I mean the slam panel. I'll just have to see how tight things get, but I can see it might have to be done. I might need to ask a favour regarding getting from MSD back to Preston once I've dropped the Fiesta off on May 28th! Hurry up and get yours completed...summer is here, time to enjoy!

Sorry to butt in..........Think you may struggle that day, I think the weekend of the 28/29th is the FIA Dragster Qualifying event so we'll all be at Santa Pod that weekend mate.
There's a train station about 3 miles away in Poulton if one of the MSD boys is kind enough to give you a lift. £4.80 i think it is to Preston (Quite regular as well, I get one from there to Preston every Friday!)
Cheers
Chris

Unfortunately, as Chris said, were away that weekend to watch some serious machinery! Any other time and it wouldn't have been a problem mate
Thanks

Not sure pal, something to do with the amal valve.
I presume the amal valve is some sort of boost limiting device when used on the standard setup, bleeding boost off in the event of a problem, i imagine they wire it up to bleed boost ont he low setting, and close up on the high setting. I'll have a proper chat with them on Wednesday when i go to chat over the car and its management
Thanks

Chris/Matt - Not to worry dudes! The train sounds good though, thanks for the strangely in-depth info!
Matt - All you need to do for that deadline is complete those 400 miles, don't complain

Well, here we go again...
Took all the ancillaries off tonight connected to the gearbox in preperation for the change to the Quiaffe ATB equipped box this weekend. All i need to do now is support the engine, remove the gearbox cradle and the gearbox>engine bolts and pull it off (ouuu er). I MUST rememebr to be careful when lowering the engine for gearbox removal, the turbo is close to the rad and we dont want a repeat of what happened!
Saturday is trek to Ian Howells day to pic up all my gear, early start so hopefully i'll have the new box, quickshift and clutch on the car on saturday afternoon with the car road worthy by Sunday.
Then its just 120miles to do before mapping on the 9th to bed in the box and clutch, easy, i'll do that in a week.
Once i've finished the running in, i've got plenty more to keep me busy between then and mapping, coilovers, lower arms to fit and setup, and injectors to install!
No long now

Nice one Matt.
I only just started following this thread from the weekend, definately the best and most informative i've read. Hopefully after the 9th you'll have your project car set up perfectly, which is the ideal for any car project.
So is it going to be purely a track and show car? Are you going for speed ultimately or just the knowledge having one of the best self-built Fiestas?
Also one more thing, where you going after this? Surely onwards and upwards, any ideas on your next project?
Well done.
James.

Bit of a tip, get a piece of plywood, just thin stuff, as big or bigger than the radiator, stick it in place, either cable ties or just taping it should do, that should stop any nasty stuff happening to your rad should anything go pear. Always prepare for the worst, because sod's law says it will happen!!

He covered it with wood earlier on in the build, so think he'll be doing that again by default. I'm going to wrap mine in swaddling clothes and fluffy cushions too!
Matt - I thought the quickshift kits were an urban legend when it came to converting them to fit the Fiesta...is it realistic to expect to do all those things in one day? I certainly hope you can, it'll be a comfort to have a decent 'box in there!

Morning Guys
Quickshift kits.....
I bought CarismaDave's Torque Developments Quickshift kit for the fiesta turbo when he put it up for sale along with the gearbox. I'm not too sure how it looks, fits or works, but i'll figure it out on saturday when i've collected it and photographed it for all to see. Should it be a kit that replaces the standard gear linkage system, i'll have a BRAND NEW gearlinkage kit for the FRST for sale.
Pez, thanks for the tip with the thin plywood, as James said i used a similar bit of wood eariler on in the build, but unfortunetly that couldnt protect the rad enough first time round. Currently i'm considering removing the rad, removing the turbo actuator, or being very very very very very very careful. I think the actuator and bracket is the most preferred at the moment as i don't want to dump coolant all over my garage floor again!
James, of course its realistic My plan is to get everything off prior to collecting the new bits, so refitment should be the only thing required. Plus i have a garage so i can work late on into the night if necessary. I've got nothing planned saturday night away (Sad i know!). I will certainly be nice to know i have a strong box in there, although i had a horrible thought the other day that this knocking i've got, *may* be the inner CV joints. Doubt it will be, but i'll be mad as a wasp if i swap the box's and it still knocks!
James_Si, well, its started out as being my road car which was a bit of fun, then i decided to modernise it with the 16v engine, then i sort of when a bit overboard on the parts, and now its turning into a bit of a powerful machine I'm building it to do a bit of everything really, its main use will be on the road, at weekends and occasionally to go to work in, but i also want to use it on trackdays, a few dragdays and stuff like that. Its not actually been built as a drag/track car, more of an allrounder. I do really like the thought of it being self built, i've learnt an awful lot from this car which is good for me, but its not really *that* self built, i've had alot of help from the other ZT owners and builders.
Plans for a next car, well, i want either a VX220T or a Dax Rush Cosworth, always like both cars, but realistically i'm not sure if i will be able to afford either of them yet! The Dax would be my most preffered choice, but they are alot of money for dedicated track car (well almost)
Thanks
Matt

No probs By the way, you know thee T-piece Lee made for you for the radiator-to-water pump-to header tank hose? What was stopping you from using the standard Ford hose, was it just the Zetec water pump inlet diameter, or was the distance from the radiator to the pump inlet too long as well?
I was thinking as I have a reducer to go on the pump inlet (maybe 50mm long) then I could join the standard Ford hose to that with metal pipe, and the Ford hose would then reach the forward-shifted rad. How does that sound to you?

Yep, into was the water pump inlet diameter that did it for me, plus i didn't want loads of hose clips down there with the engine movement pulling at them all the time. Thats the only thing i can think of with your proposed setup which may be a problem, but other than that, it sounds good!
Thanks

Yeah I know what you mean, which is why I'm thinking the more rubber/silicone the better. Could do with that bottom hose to play around with and see what's what really. Seen any lying around?

I hacked up my old one to use the part of it that goes off up to the header tank, i think i still have the bit that goes between the water pump and the radiator. That any good to you?
Thanks

Mayyyybe. I think I'm right in thinking it's quite a big fat rubber-moulded T-piece down between the radiator, water pump and header tank isn't it? I suppose it could be handy if you're not going to use it. Could return it if need be

Yep, they can be.
But today it wasn't??? I've got one of those friends who comes round and seems to do really difficult jobs really easily and makes you look stupid for asking him round to help.
Well he came round, and before the kettle had boiled the box was on and a couple of bolts where in
Still, done now, i'll build it up between now and wednesday
Thanks
Matt
