Don't you just love shiny pipes? Is it a good idea leaving the self amalgamating tape in place full time? I'd be tempted to find a hose that fits properly, as good as the tape is.
I hope you find the union in good time and get all your jobs done to allow a starting attempt tomorrow, I hope you've alerted your bank to the masses of money which will be flowing out now that the conversion's done...to keep that fuel tank topped up! :D:D

Plumber's tape you mean! (easier to spell!)
StreetDragster :i needed to use a small amount of self amalgamating (sp??) tape on the water pump end of the pipe

Only a temp measure for now

Nope, i assume plumbers tape is PVC tape for putting ont hreads and stuff, this is like rubber stuff that only sticks to itself and molds into a single piece of rubber after a bit of time/heat
Thanks

ITS RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very very happy, its running, took all day to get it to key turning time, but it started fine.
Turned it onto ignition a couple of times to get fuel pressure up in the lines, then turned the key and it started no problems.
Couple of things so far-
1. Exhaust is alot louder than i thought it would be, but that might be due to the car being in the garage and its echoing off the walls.
2. Cosworth fan switch may need to be swapped to a normal FRST one, at the moment, stationary in the garage the fan comes on at 'M' in 'NORM', spins for about 30 secs and then its back the the cold/norm border.
3. Breathing quite heavy at the moment, probably due to having just been started, plus its cold so maybe its half condensation i'm seeing.
4. Cams are really lumpy, sounds cool.
5. Idling a bit high, but that can be adjusted, maybe needs a little road run to see how it is after not being on idle for a while.
6. Fuel pressure needs turning up, at 1 bar now. Going to turn it up to 3.
Thanks
Matt

Sounds good, I suppose you never know with exhausts! Trial and error. Is there a way of just quietening them down?

Exhausts allways sound different once the cars wam and the boxes have sooted up a bit.
Do you only have the rearbox at the moment then?? No mid-box?

That's fantastic news! There can be nothing more frightening than turning a key on a new engine, I'm so glad it fired up like that Tripling the fuel pressure should liven things up! Interesting what you say about the fan switch...I personally think there's no need for using a switch that'll make the engine run at lower temps. If it runs too hot, the cooling needs sorting, as a fan switch will only have the desired effect for a very brief time if the car's building heat.
Lumpy cams kick ass *Bluh bluh bluh bluh* I'm sure the exhaust will be more subdued outside...my diesel sounded like someone had parked an HGV in my ear when it was running inside its shed
Do you know for a fact the fuel pressure needs to be at 3 bar? Just wondered if there's any chance of checking the air/fuel ratio if you're guessing at the moment?
Maybe it's just me (and don't accuse me of any jinxing!) but I don't think you're going to have too many problems....the reward for clinical work

3 words
build
me
one
LOL, i won't be building another one of these, EVER! Unless its to slot into a Westfield

Fan switch now changed back to a FRST one, and its hold temperature alot better, takes about 25mins of idling to get the temp up[ to fan switch point, don't think i'll have a problem with cooling when the car is being used properly, and airs going through the rad.

Lumpy cams sound cool, but its knackering the idle up, need to have it raised somehow, i imagine its on the management. Ever tried inching a car into a garage, which is running in so no over 3krpm, with lumpy as hell cams and no low end torque, with a paddle clutch!
Interesting is the word

Well, the haynes said that it should be at 2.7bar at idle with the vacuum pipe disconnected (I think, somewhere round that anyway, havent got the manual with me) so i raised it to match that, doesn't seem to have had any ill effects but i think i'll get the car checked over at MSD before i start running it in properly.

Now thats wishfull thinking But so far, you may be right, everything appears to be working as planned, excpet i broke the god damn drivers side foglight electrical connection check ing the bulb, bugger. I'm sure the case will be different when i start driving it.
From April to November building up a powerfull zetec turbo by yourself is quite an achivement.
Congratiolations mate!
Thanks Mate, it's been a long haul, but we got there in the end
Now to get some use out of the damn thing!!
Thanks

Cars now booked in at Motorsport Developments to get checked over prior to running in, on the 7th of December. Don't think i'll be driving it before then, wouldn't want it to go pop due to fueling being out and waste all my effort!
Then running in over Xmas, that'll be fun
Thanks
Matt

I hope to have my car running properly in a similar sort of timescale to you
Cheers,
Andy

Morning All,
Took to motor down to have the exhaust quietened down, and the bloke thinks that he couldn't do it without restricting the power, and given my spec/cams etc i've decided to leave it.
Also, started to notice a few little niggles, where i've put the downpipe on its blowing a little bit, the cam belt cover is rubbing on the left hand side engine mount bracket (part of the chassis). So i'm going to remove it, trim it back where its rubbing and put some vibratech engine moutns on, its only got standard Ford ones for the moment. (They were never going to hold though)
Thanks
Matt

Definitely not worth restricting it, unless you plan on doing long drives Shame about the cam belt cover, will modding it give it enough room? I'm amazed you used Ford mounts!

Cam belt cover won't be a problem, the cam pulley thats nearest the mount, belt goes around it if you with me. so a little trimming of the guard won't put the cambelt at risk of contact. Shoul dhave plenty of clearance with it cut back, only 3/4mm of interferance at the moment.
Ford mounts where a temporary measure after i ripped a set of vibratech's on the cvh engine. thought they would be ok for running in, but the aggressive idle is going to kill them methinks. Vibratechs are int he post now though, Cheers Amber Performance
Thanks

Whooops, forgot to torque up the right hand hub nut eeeeek. Now needs a new wheel bearing, another job for weekend
Thinking about this exhaust lark again, i think i may have to have the power reduced and make it quieter, i want to use the car on track days and i'm pretty sure its going to fail the noise test like it is, but that can be sorted out at a later date....
Thanks
Matt

Thanks

Reduce power Surley someone can quieten the exhaust without reducing power / restricting it too much.
