My Zetec Turbo Build *Abandoned Project*

Post pics of your Fiesta here.

Postby heeman10 on Sun Dec 19, 2004 12:14 am

I went round to meet Matt and see his car tonight, it is very impressive. Nice to see someone go to town on a car and come out the otherside without garish paint jobs and stick-on tax disc holders ;) There are some great touches, and it'll be a bit of a fire-breather when it hits the road for real!

Shame I had to drive away in the Metro

any chance of a list of the major components
i know theres a lot of bits that you need to modify as and when the problems occur but a list of the major components engine box etc would be great ??????

Hi All, got internet access back for half an hour so don't expect any prompt replys from me, the ethernet cable at home has gone up the swanny.

Glad you liked it mate, hope i help your quest out a little bit, any thing else you need give me a shout.

The major components needed for a build like this vary depending on whether you want to you the FRST inlet, the zetec inlet or the rover inlet, so a list of parts wouldn't be much use to most people.

Update- The smaller diameter lower water hose arrived today, the starter motor heat shield and secondary engine earth have been ordered. Just new HT leads and the pipe to be returned from Fusion is all i'm waiting for before it can be properly run in.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Phil,

I was having hot starting problems, would start fine when cold, but hot the starter motor would just click. It was down to either the starter motor getting too hot or the earth to the starter motor being rubbish, turns out it actually didnt have the first earth on but now it has two :D Got a heat shield on the starter motor too :D

Thanks

Running In Has Begun! :D

Turns Out That A New Battery Sorted The Hot Starting Problem, Although The Alternator Is Only Charging At 13.6v So That May Have Something To Do With It, Might Retro Fit The Zetec One On.

Found My First Teething Problem, after 200miles of driving the bottom rad hose has developed a leak, turns out the rubber hose needs to be approx 1 inch longer with a new jubilee on it. Job for weekend.

Also, the gearbox cradle appears to be contacting the suspension crossmember, so it knocks alot, so a small amount of metal needs grinding off. Job Number 2 for weekend.

And there appears to be a little vacuum leak on the back of the inlet manifold, i suspect its the ACT sensor or the boost gauge vaccum line. Job Number 3 for weekend.

Apart from those, all going well so far all things considered :D

800 Miles And Counting :D

Thanks

Matt

Yer, shame about the water leak, teething problems, i know. At least its not serious!

NO Boost Mate!!
Running in on standard FRST injectors and management so at the moment its heavily under fuelling. Although it has been setup by MSD for running in, but will need the Secs on it before any sort of boost is used.
Spark plugs i'm running are the Focus RS ones.

Thanks

Did you skim your flywheel beforehand? Any chance of you selling off yours to buy an Alcon 6 paddle?

Hi James,

Yep, the flywheel was skimmed when i had the bolt holes opened out. But i'll just live with the judder for now until the clutch dies and then put a Alcon in.

Thanks

Update so far...

600 miles done, 400 to go. Decided on Motorsport Developments Live Map which requires the TPS from the FRST to be fitted to the Zetec throttle body, thats not going to be easy. And i can't use my Cosworth low impedance light blue injectors either, so thats a job for Ebay.

I now have a suspect Diff, may have been damaged on engine installation. The clunking/knocking is still there on left hand and straight driving, disappears on right hand turns. Also gives the noise of a failed wheel bearing. But the bearing is fine and the cv joint has also been changed. Its going on the ramp tomorrow to be throughly inspected to find the problem. Then i'll fix it!
Has anyone fitted a MT75 gearbox to a fiesta mk3? I'm considering that option, i've got a box from a Mondeo 1800
Apart from that, no other problems whatsoever, amazing considering its conversion!

Thanks for any and all help

Matt

P.S If the diff has gone i may have a AP 4 Paddle Clutch for sale, will have done between 700 and 1000 miles running in :D

Cheers mate, sounds like it may be a bit of a mission to get it fitted. I'll have to weigh up the options i think. A rebuilt ERST gearbox would be ideal, why didn't i buy that one that was for sale a while back?. Kicking myself now.

Looking for £165 delivered mate, thats what i paid for them two weeks ago. They have done 1000miles tops, and are the 0 280 150 400, 437cc flow.

Thanks

That's great Matt! Throw on some rot and oily gunk and I'd believe it was an OEM part! I remember back in the good old days when the difference between CPSs was ruining your plans, and this is all it took :) It's a great little bit of gizmo-wizardry. I didn't know you'd found a decent gearbox, that's good news. Get the Zetec TPS connector soldered on and get it back out on the road now :D Good update :Q

Cheers Pal, Yep TPS sensor choice used to be the bain of my life, but its not too bad to get around after i managed to get a FRST TPS (Cheers Freakpower!) and compare the two. Gearbox is a much needed item methinks! I think i have one of the connectors in the garaged attic, but what a ballache it is to get up there. I'll have to make the effort today though and fill my soldering iron with gas!

thats some nice engineering work there. really good idea

Thanks mate!

whats the reason for using a zetec throttle body ??

why not just a frst one

I'm retaining the Zetec Idle Speed Control Valve in the standard position on the Zetec inlet, which has a port through the alloy to the throttle body, and then the throttle body has a port which mates up with this to allow the ISCV to flow air at idle.
The FRST doesnt have this port in the throttle body, It's ISCV uses a pipe off the crossover pipe, so i couldn't use it at this late stage.
Plus the mondeo one is much bigger which has got to be a good thing :)

Thanks
