Mysterious oil leak
My 2i has developed a leak. It's been leaking since summer last year (car is in storage, fecking huge heated hanger). I've moved it around the hanger about 3 times and each time I end up with an oil patch under the near side hub.
I've never had a leak until about 2 trackdays after changing the gearbox. I suspect it's coming from this as I've never had a leak from the engine before. The sump is good, with a good seal. The gearbox is a new BC stage 2+ with quaife and my drive shafts are new reconditioned.
I've been working on the car today. I haven't touched it for about 4 months, the patch is massive.
Couple of factors:
Patch always starts under the hub.
No signs of a drip.
Really can't see much of a run from anywhere.
Drive shaft inner cv and boot was slightly oily, very light though.
The car was level and I took the fill plug out. Oil flowed out. There's plenty in there, maybe too much if anything. Now settled/level.
Engine oil level is fine.
My thoughts were its coming from the diff, via the drive shaft.
I've taken the drive shaft out. The oil seal looks fine.
Any suggestions before I put it all back together.

Re: Mysterious oil leak
Sniff the floor lol, gearbox oil smells and so does brake fluid. Only needs a slight donk on the driveshaft seals for them to leak, or if they have been pushed into the box too far they can leak.

Re: Mysterious oil leak
It isnt the brake fluid. Checked the level and its fine. The drive shaft has been out for 5 days now, the diff hole is bunged up with a rag. The damper is also out so the hub/disc is resting on a bubble wrapped wheel. No signs of leakage on the bubble wrap.
I'm inclined to think it was leaking at the CV and running along the shaft until it dripped off, which happened to be at the hub. Possibly knocked or ill fitted (by myself, I hasten to add).
Will pop it back in later, and see what happens.

id be surprised if it would make it past a cv gaitor without the car being used as each corrugation of the gaitor would act as a drip....are all the cars in that garage yours? not a mate messing with your mind ?

Re: Mysterious oil leak
My thoughts too. Hence why I'm stumped.
There's a load of oily gunk on the lower arm. It could be collecting and moving down that, to the hub/ball joint.
No to the pranks. The other motors belong to lads away on Ops etc. My car has my rank, name and contact details on the dash. I'm a WO1 so I doubt many would have the balls to play that kind of a prank on me.

Re: Mysterious oil leak
My first thought when reading the first post was, what is leaking, oil, gearbox oil etc,
As you have stated the brake fluid is ok my thoughts turned to gear box oil seeping out the seal onto the lower arm and running down, then read you found gunk on the lower arm, so I reckon that's the problem.
What's does the leak smell of? You know gearbox oil when you smell it, it's one of the mankest things I have smelt, it like the devils piss I reckon it's so bad

Re: Mysterious oil leak
Smells like oil.
I'm aware that gearbox oil has a distinctive smell but its new oil, ie 1k miles max.
Gearbox appeared over filled. Sweating???

When you say smells like oil your need to be a bit clearer fella, you mean engine oil?
