That front bumper is a clue, but not enough of one.

The front bumper shape is about right for a Mk2 Sierra, and that fits in with the shape of the car and the shapes of the windows, as well as the engine size - but then again, I can't see any trace of the roof gutters a Sierra should have, and there's something about the proportions which just doesn't look right for a Sierra to me. That said, it's the closest thing I can think of.

I would have said a laguna, but then the front splitter doesnt look right, perhaps a cavalier?

Body shape is right for a Cavalier but no Cavalier I know of had a bumper that had a recess that shape.

FiestaBen :I rekon it's a saab of some description

Not with a 1.8-litre engine it's not

I thought that after however the back is right with the lip on the boot, don't think it's a cavalier, been looking at pics of ours and it doesn't look right

Indeed, as I say, the bumper's wrong for a Cavalier. Closest I can get is a Sierra, but I still don't think a Sierra is quite right either!

So maybe it's a sierra based car with a saab boot :D

Looking at our saab it has a very saab shaped front - the long windscreen and bonnet :S

Which model of Saab are we talking about here? Front bumper's all wrong for a 9000, and the 900/9-3 didn't have the boot lip. And I reiterate that neither model came with a 1.8-litre engine. :P

Our 900 has a boot spoiler/lip - whatever you want to call it

Also looking at that pic, the one in the auction looks similar with the front - the big sloping bonnet, then as you follow the car down you have the rear windows and quarter windows, - I'm probably well wrong and yes there is the engine size as you keep saying  but hey it's a guessing game :)

I thought perhaps SD1 at first, then saab 900, but it's evidently a 5 door - the bumper looks familiar though....
