trecoll :Edit: I've decided I'm not gonna start a war
I was the same Rob, I detested it, until I started using it and discovered the nifty little touches and refinements that make an iPhone.
My Windows Mobile device simply refuses to talk to my company exchange server, but with the iPhone, it just works. Now that TomTom have gotten off their backsides to create a car kit and software for TomTom on the iPhone it makes more sense than ever to me, totally touch friendly and with Voice control it makes it perfect for using in the car.
Go and have a long play in your local apple store and you'll be suprised. I was.

Thats wierd. Mine talks fine, but bosses iPhone refuses
I must say though, having played with the bosses to try and get it to work, it does have a very nice UI on it, but for me it is farr too 'cuddly'. But I have been using windows mobile since the begining (of the mobile version) and have had Windows ppc's before that too, so it may just be that I am more used to having to wait every now and then, and having to tweak to my liking (like you should with any windows software )
Plus, WM can multitask, just like me!

Re: New iPhone 3GS !
As you know Rob, I use an XDA Orbit at the mo, and as much as I do like it, there's some things that just feel unfinished, plus the fact that I have to use a stylus makes it less of a phone for me and more of a PDA, although I have had various PPC's since I was 15
Mine won't multitask correctly anyway, I can't listen to music and GPS at the same time, it doesn't have enough RAM

Not half as surprised as the 16yr-old shop assistant was. She told me to put it back in my trousers and called security

That was probably down to your proximity to the 16yr-old shop assistant. If you'd have found a more secluded area to play it should have been ok.

I've been waiting for this too. Cancelled my Vodafone contract already.
For me it was a process of illumination due to features and available apps. Having been through everything else looking for the stuff I want, it came down to BlackBerry or iPhone. iPhone wins.

Don't have to now. If you've had your contract 12 months or more you can get one for £175 and extend your contract for a further 24 months.

Re: New iPhone 3GS !
I still think it's far too much money on a contract. I don't mind paying for the phone outright, but I completely resent havign to spend so much money on a monthly contract.
Nothing to see here...

I thought that, but the costs aren't actually that different to the other similarly spec'd phones that O2 sell.

Re: New iPhone 3GS !
Well, I was thinking about this again today and decided to look (before I saw ollies reply)
A 16gb iphone 3g on a 600 min / 500 text package is £155 plus £34 per month over 18 months.
That makes the iphone worth, to me, £281 quid plus the ball and chain of an 18 month contract (I currently pay 19 per month with no wifi, add the wifi makes it 27 per month but only a 30 day contract).
That's not out of the way now, the only downside is the ball and chain, though I will say, I'm sure tariff costs have dropped dramatically; we'll see how much they want for the 3gs - I bet it's significantly more. I must admit I really like my 5800 and would like an n97 when they're commonly available and not stupid money - but if an iphone were available with a decent battery life and for reasonable money I'd be tempted
EDIT 1 : I know what the quoted battery life is, but I'd rather hear from owners what they're like with bluetooth and no wifi on (If I want the internet, I'll turn it on to check).
EDIT 2 : http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/pay-monthly/apple-iphone3gs they're taking pre-orders and have prices.

The Nokia's don't seem to get down from the stupid money anymore. The N96 was always more than an iPhone and has now simply vanished from O2's available phones. The N95 seems to be the only long standing one that's actually got cheaper. Other's just disappear. A while ago I was looking at a 6something or other and an N78, both of which vanished over night. Even their own XDA range has reduced down to 2 models, which from reading the user reviews appear to be a bit crap.

Battery life is longer using WiFi to surf than 3G, apparently. 9 hours they're claiming. Although it remains to be seen how close to that it is, it's certainly going to be better than the last one.

awesome phones for spastics who love 2 year contracts, pointless apps that are only good for boring normal people with a pointless app and being a sad fashion victim who crys into their pants when they find they don't have the latest one anymore and have to either wait 12months for upgrade or pay £4million.

Re: New iPhone 3GS !
maybe i was abit over the top
just annoys me when people moan about iPhone when they havent used them to its full potential. O2 contract thing doesnt bother me as iam happy with the service i get and reception on phone is always good so being locked down for 18\24 months is fine. I find it a very useful device given my line of work and the traveling i do for work.

Peep Show :Browsing ft on iPhone ftw lol
I have to say this is an excellent phone! totally owns my orbit in functionality and speed. At first glance battery life appears much better than my old phone plus I have been using the iPhone constantly most of today on wifi or 3g and the battery is only at 40% whenever my old would be dead!
Voice control is a lot better than I expected it to be and I can type pretty quickly on it too lol. Well worth it
