Problem or technical question?

Evening, I'm currently battling several electrical problems. Most to do with lights.

Currently I have no reverse light(switch on gearbox on order)
No rear fog light(switch doesn't light up)
no RHS brake light(issue still unknown)

Front RHS foglight has water in the unit as the grommet as fallen off. Will be re-fitting, on my to do list.

front foglight fuse plastic sleeve has melted, but fuse not blown
Heater fan fuse plastic sleeve melted, but fuse is not blown.

Finally did the Fiesta RS turbo come with a bulb for the cigar lighter bezel to light up, and did the centre console heater/fan panel light up(theres a bulb in place but the panel doesn't light up.... Bulb is in full working order.

I look forward to some replies... Sadly RSOC Fiesta RS section is like a ghost town.

Thanks.

Evening!

I hate electrical problems also but have had some similar to yours!
Does the blower work? The green relay in the back of the fusebox controls this, reverse light, cooling fan so it could be this?

The centre panel should light up and I'm sure the bezel should too!
Good luck tracing the faults!

The ignition relay is one I would suggest first, so as above.
I would also be looking at earths.

When you say fog light switch doesn't light up, is this when all lights are on or the light on the button when you out fogs on?
It's not uncommon for the illumination bulb to blow in the dash switches, so could be that.

I would get a multi meter and check to see if your getting power to the illumination wires on both the switch and fag lighter (grey and yellow wire)

The other thing with the rear lights could be due to the incorrect bulb, the rear bulb holders are also a bit or a nightmare in the way of earths, the bulbs won't earth fully from the holder part even though you get continuity.

If the fuse holders have started to melt check the right amp fuse is fitted, and check the wiring connections to the effected parts connected to them fuses to see if there is corrosion on the connections

Hey Mark welcome to whats left of a dying breed im afraid
I replied over on RSOC- username Mattjak13.

As Others say the biggest problem with the electrics on a FRST is the goddam IGN relay.
These were prone to melting due to the biggest problem of the underbonnet cooling issues, as the fiesta turbo runs quite hot as standard, the cooling fan tends to run too much when sat in traffic thus causing the relay to get very hot and subsequently do irreparable damage.

From experience myself and believe me its not the easiest job I changed my loom for an XR2i one as it wasnt put under the same cooling stresses and is exactly the same, the only difference is the engine management which is a straight unplug- and just replug in the new loom.
The loom you need has to be from the model that doesn't have the leccy switches in the doors, ie not the 1800 zetec model.

Total pain I know but it cured mine totally.

Hi i'll check the relay when I get a chance.

The foglight switch used to light up the other week, but was quite hard to keep the switch lit up as i'd have to force the switch in hard or keep pressing it.

The cigar lighter doesn't even have a bulb in the bezel. The heater control has a working bulb, but ive never seen the panel light up.

The heater/blower works sometime theres a noise on cold like strain, It was bad when the old altenator was fitted but that died so i bought i'm sure a 90amp one. So could be relay problems or worn motor.

Heres some pics of the centre console, from the rear.

So the heater control unit has this bulb holder, which I removed a working but fairly dim bulb.

Image

Holding it up to the light I can't see through the filament, or holding up to a room light. Part number on the 'white' bit is 89FG18K257AA. It looks a solid piece of plastic.

As for the cigar lighter heres the back, the coupler/plug removed was a single plug with 2 wires.
There is a single wire with what looks like factory black tape at the end of it, with no coupler on the end of the wire.

Image

Everything else behind there is as it should. Except the front screen has been replaced with a non heated screen so looking for a blanking plug for the useless switch.

If anyone has one that they'd sell im interested.

I would get a new bulb for the heater panel, I can see anyone messing with the panel so it could be the bulb just ain't bright enough.
You can separate that heater osnrl if you really want to, but there's nothing in there you can change.

The fag lighter doesn't have a bulb, the bulb fixture is there, the bulb and its holder ain't.

Blanking plate for the heated screen switch are easy enough to come by, lower spec models had them, I might even have some kicking about somewhere, but tbh if it were me, I would put a heated screen back in, you got glass cover on your insurance??

Ok thanks just spent an hour on the car again cleaning behind the console and removing the vents to re foam and wash them. I've stuck an LED bulb in the heater panel and have some light.

I've cleaned the foglight switch and sprayed some WD40 inside, It worked and had rear fog light and the switch lit up. So tried my fix by switching it on and off several times, then the switch failed to work.
I've bought a replacement of ebay to fit.

While I was at it, I bought a universal Cigar lighter unit with a thin bulb so I'll keep the bulb and wiring that comes with it and wire it up behind the stereo. It only cost £4 so, no expense spared... and seeing as you say its not a standard item, It'll be a nice and cheap mod.

I've got the car on classic insurance, so doubt i'd have screen excess as the policy was cheap enough... And the screen fitted is new last year, jut before i bought the car.

If you do have a blanking plug I can buy, that'll be great please.

Don't get wrong fella, in your car it should of had the bulb for the fag lighter, lower spec cars dustbin, so surprised yours is missing the bulb tbh, still your on that so all good.

Most insurance should have a glass cover but always worth checking, if your happy to stick with a std screen that's fair enough.
I will check my for sale threads to see if I have a blanking plate listed if not I'll have a dig around the shed tomorrow
