Re: Nick's ST
Right-o, here's the latest updates...
Rear axle spacers fitted, brings the wheels out into the arches a little more so they no longer look lost, and I've also fitted two cold air feeds in place of the foglights. These need a bit more fettling until I'm totally happy with them. The passenger side one routes cold air to the K&N filter, and the drivers side one routes cold air to the power steering reservoir which is known to boil the fluid when the engine is hot.

Yeah, one of my abs sensors mounting hole snapped. Grabbed the other one with a pair of mole grips!
They feel really good, but I'm getting some really strange noises that I'm going to have to investigate. First is the warped disc noise (probably is warped discs) and the other is a tinny rattle when going over bumps in the road - sounds like a loose washer or something. Going to take them apart tomorrow and have another look.

The bolts supplied were slightly too long so I've cut those down a bit, the discs are definitely warped but NSR has a bearingy grindy noise lol

It's not far enough gone to cause play yet, it's just very loud.

Nope, sadly not, they're pressed into the rear hub itself. Just short of £20 for a new bearing though.
I'm lucky that the snapped ABS sensor still works!

What mileage has this done, Nick? These use the Focus bearings at the rear don't they?

Re: Nick's ST
Just clocked over 50k, Mark.
I think I put extra stress on the bearing though - when I originally fitted the axle spacers, the bolts supplied with the kit were too long, instead of going through the hub they stopped at the end of the thread and although looked done up, there was a small gap between the hub and the axle. I then had to take a heavy load so I'm thinking that's probably done it.
It's either that, or iron filings from when I was cutting down the first bolt to the shorter length.
Now I know how long the bolts are supposed to be (34.5mm), I can look at getting proper bolts rather than ones cut down to an approximate length.
I believe they are the same as the Focus bearings.

Ahh, OK. Thanks. It's not done a big mileage then. I ask because I have the same hubs as what you have there, and I want to know how long they'll last.I don't think Ford specified particularly durable bearings in these! I'm not sure of any uprated replacements though.

The kit I got was one of the Pumaspeed ones, the bolts Pumaspeed supply are 40mm long but if you put them on as they are, two of them rub the ABS ring, and the others don't go in far enough.
Mark - I'm led to believe the focus hubs eat bearings anyway if lowered. I haven't come across any updated ones so I think it's just a case of replace when necessary.
This one failing I'm certain is my fault, one way or the other!

And back out again. The garage couldn't do it themselves so took the hub to another local garage with a press. But instead of pressing the bearing in, they heated it up. That's now f**cked this bearing up, so I've now ordered a second bearing which he'll press in instead of heating it.
Luckily the labour charge has been waived.

It's not as though they don't have a press either
It's a cash in hand job, I supply the bearing and it will get done properly this time.

Yeah, it's a bit of a difficult situation. The garage who I'm dealing with are removing and replacing the hub but a second garage did the bearing, I have no deal with the second garage who actually f**cked the bearing. If it was a larger amount of money I'd be worried but the bearings are fairly cheap OEM.

Re: Nick's ST
ehh?! confused now
btw sounds like you have the 2 pairs of bolts in the wrong way around? if 2 didnt reach long enough, and the other 2 too long, wouldnt switching them around sort it?
as it sounds like the axle is thicker on one side than the other (or top/bottom)
that probably wont go understood, dont know how to word it lol

Re: Nick's ST
Its fairly simple
Me -> Garage 1 -> Garage 2 -> Garage 1 -> Me
Garage 1 doesn't have a press
Garage 2 does have a press, but labour is mucho expensive
I take my car to garage 1 (who do cash in hand jobs), they take off the hub and take the hub to garage 2 to get them to press the new bearing in, this is then brought back to garage 1 to fit back onto the car.
As for the bolts, its difficult to explain. Two of the holes on the hub have open ends, two of them stop at the end of the thread. When I put the long bolts in, the two open ended holes the bolts went all the way through and hit the ABS ring. The other two went into the hub as far as it would go, but didn't hold the hub to the axle quite correctly. By shortening the bolts, they don't go through the open ends, and they don't reach the end of the hub assy thus holding everything together properly.
