Nomad and S1s trackcar. Update 02/03/2012 Welding and s**t
Nomad and S1s trackcar. Update 02/03/2012 Welding and s**t
Thought I would gather all the pics of this in one place. Me and my mate Alex have owned this car for 3 years now, and managed 2 trackdays and 1 1/4 weekend thing.
Pretty shocking, so we decided to finish it and use it loads this year (i hope!). Its nearly finished now, having spent some time with Scort having a cage in, and having work done when we can in the last couple months.
We have a trackday on the second of feb so the heat is on to get it all finished by then, so we can use it as a kinda testday to make sure all is still ok.
We bought it off Si T off these very forums, he had already stripped it out to a degree, and lowered it on gmax shocks and springs. He also uprated the engine with 2ltr cams, and rs1800 bits.
The first thing we did in it was the Fordsport weekender and it looked like this (all we had done was start stripping more weight)
We scrapped the Gmax after that and fitted Konis fronts and Ford rears, also fitted Morrettes and bonnet pins, a rear strut brace and harnesses and swapped the xr2i seats for frst recaros. We fitted ST150 front brakes, OZ Alloys and a Momo Steering wheel. Also lost more weight.
After that is was ready for Silverstone
And its first proper trackday at Bedford in 2006
The latest (and final!) stage has been the rollcage, b&m short shift, perspex windows (yet to be fitted) and fitment of AVO coilovers. We are in the process of painting the inside of the car, fitting the last few bits and servicing it now, so its hopefully ready to go on the second! Of course this last stage has involved more weight loss, the door cards are gone, to be replaced with thin plastic, the windows are to be replaced with perspex and the electric windows are now removed to be replaced with manual winders. The sounddeadening has of course been stripped and the heater box and matrix have been removed. The dash if being replaced with a cut back lightweight version. The recaros have been replaced with a single Sparco Evo 2 sidemount seat, this mounts onto the cage via some bars added by Scort. The passenger side recaro can be bolted in for trackdays when a passenger is allowed, this will prob be replaced with a second bucket side in the future.
Thanks for reading, this thread was mainly to get all these pics together! More will be added as the car is finished!

Mate, I'm really sorry to have to break this to you, but someone's nicked your interior.
My name is Alex. I used to have a Capri. I don't anymore. But I'm still called Capri.

Yeah tis Frasiers, its being broke now iirc.
I just noticed how scabby the gearstick surround looks in those pics. Happily I have a black coated one to go on when the painting is done. lol

Is this the actual route of the rear washer pipe or is supposed to be inside the panel you have it mounted on? Just curious for the rebuild I'm on with as I can't remember.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

Re: XR2i Trackcar - 56k Move Along.
Few more hours spent on the car today, we got the inside prepped for paint and got a lot of the painting done soon, the floor is brush on hammerite and the rest is sprayed, ran out of cans so the roof and some bits of the sides will have to wait till next weekend now.
Also got the heater matrix hoses joined, swapped the rocker cover for a black one and changed the air filter for one I had laying about, this is temp as I want to go back to a standard airbox.
Finally I cut some holes in the front bumper, for airflow I guess, really I wanted to use my new holes saws and lose even more weight.
I will let the pics do the talking, I am pretty happy with the silver inside.

Been out in the garage all day, paint is done, seat is back in, started fitting the perspex windows and fitted the manual front window widers. Also gave it a mini service, oil and antifreeze, plugs and leads.

Re: XR2i Trackcar - Pic Update 27/01/08
Been working on it again today.
Need to sort the rear opening windows, as have a broken catch on one, then just a case of riveting them in. Also need to sort the dash and wiring, Brianpower is over in the week to help cut out the excess weight from the wiring loom. Nearly there!
Few random pics, its been washed for the first time in nearly 2 years!

Re: XR2i Trackcar - Pic Update 27/01/08
The ford badge is on the front because the hole is pretty unsightly, I have considered removing the bumpers for base spec ones, they would look odd with the kit thou, and removing the kit leaves holes and odd paint. it may also suprise you to learn the base specs weigh more than hollowed out 2i ones. The tailgate is shagged and will hopefully be replaced with a base spec one, with no spoiler, depends what comes up.
If something makes it look a bit worse but saves a decent amount of weight then it goes, there is a world of difference between a splitter and a badge!

Also just to add the car is being built to a budget, so welding holes and painting is out of the question, and spending cash on base spec bumpers is a nono, rather spend them on trackdays.

Re: XR2i Trackcar - Pic Update 31/01/08
Done some more on the car today, cutting it rather fine now, tommorrow is the last day I have to work on it before the trackday on sat Not as bad as it sounds thou, its really only little things left to do.
Today was mainly spent sorting the dash, I have cut it to roughly the dimensions I want, but its rather rough around the edges, it will have to do for sat thou, will take it out and tidy it up after thou. I decided to fit the steering cowling back on, as there is a fair amount of sharp edges on the collum area that I would rather have covered! Nice to see the clocks with the elliot tacho finally fitted too. I also made a little panel out of carbon to mount the fusebox too.

Re: XR2i Trackcar - Lightly Smashed - 2/2/08
Well had a eventful day at Bedford today, bit tired so I am sorry if this makes no sense!!
After loads of faffing sorting the car and traile rout we set off, and got to Bedford at 8:40ish, got unloading the car etc and discovered a nice grinding noise from the front, this turned out to be the new coilovers catching the front wheels. At this late stage the only (admittidly crap) solution was spacers, luckily there is a place in Bedford so a 15min driver there and back again saw us with a set and a trolly jack (forgot mine). We put these on, and signed on and did the briefing. After the briefing we discovered the rear brake line was catching the tire, where it had go bend somehow. Took the wheel off and bent that into place again. So we were fairly late getting on track. Had loads of fun, and was a good day to play with the coilovers settings. Unfortantly the tyres are past their best and the car was a little tail happy to say the least.
Sadly at about 4pm the drivers side wheel spacer decided enough was enough and, by the looks of it, shattered at the bottom. This caused the wheel studs / nuts to shear. One Stud is completely awol and the others were fairly f**cked! Alex was driving at the time, our mate came back to the pits with the guy from the track so I could get the trailer out to the car. The session had been red flagged at this point, was orginally yellowed but they deemed it too dangerous as cars were still overtaking and also sliding out around the corner when the saw the fiesta at the side of the track, due to lifting off thru the corner. In the end the guys from the track managed to bodge the wheel back on with 2 studs, and we got it back on the trailer and home.
I will get a pic of the spacer up tomorrow, its pretty shocking!
one in the pits, looking ready for action.
nutsack.

Re: XR2i Trackcar - Lightly Smashed - 2/2/08
Sorry to hear this mate, especially after the last push you have had to do to get the car ready for the track day.
what damage has been done to the car? could the wheel studs or anything else of failed/worn first causing the damage to the spacer which then in turn caused the studs to completely fail?
if it was just the spacer that has failed causing the rest to fail, i would defo get onto the people who the spacer came from and express my dissatisfaction with the products and see if there was any action that could be taken to compensate for loss from this occurrence!
If you need any bits then im breaking a 16v 2i at mo so if there are random bits you need give us a shout and will see what we can do

Never a nice feeling when a wheel comes off your wagon. Just after passing our test, myself and a mate were travelling down a road in his Mini when the front wheel overtook us!
Hope there's not too much damage.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.
