Oil advice and recommendations here

Postby oilman on Wed Mar 01, 2006 10:52 pm

I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

Regards
Simon

Ok,

For the Zetec you will need a 5w-30 grade ideally. If you intend to track the car I would look at a good quality synthetic.

have a look at something like Motul or Amsoil.

Cheers

Simon.

I have a couple of questions! :D

What sort of running in oil do you recommend for a newly built turbocharged zetec?

What sort of oil would you recommend for a Duratec 2.5 V6, Twin turbo, freshly built, so running in oil. Then the oil to run it on thereafter. It will not be used everyday by a long shot, but when it come out, it will be getting used hard.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

For the Zetec run in on a basic ACEA A1/A2 5w-30. Once run in switch to a decent 5w-30 ACEA A3/A5 synthetic.

For the Duratec, run in on a 10w-40 semi-synthetic and then switch to a 5w-40 synthetic.

ford fiesta mk3 1.1
road use.

I'm 1000 km over the recommended change and now I hear a strange "knocking" sound coming from the engine bay. (especially when accelerating)

What oil do you recommend and could the sound come from the oil slug build up or should I really get it checked by a garage?

thanks in advance.

Hello... I have a Fiesta rs turbo engine in my Escort mk5 and I live in Greece. It has a Garrett T25 and runs on 165 hp with the help of a superchip. Done about 30000 km's after a full rebuild with pistons, shells etc etc and new liners in the engine block. Car is for daily use, rarely abused and most of the times driven in lght traffic... what would you suggest for engine oil?Any opinion for Eneos engine oil? They have good reputation here in Greece.I must tell you also that the ambient temperature during summer can climb up to 38-39 degrees. Thank you very much!

Hi

Any idea how hot the engine oil gets?

We don't deal with Eneos, so I can't comment.

Hi Tim

I am afraid I don't have info on oil temps... Judging from water temps, although I know that the dashboards temp gauge is not the most accurate instrument, it never goes above middle, unless I stuck in heavy traffic with the a/c on. When the car is moving again, the temp falls again. Thanx for your interest, I think I must install an oil temp gauge in the future and then ask your advice again...

Hi

Getting an oil temp gauge fitted is a sensible option, as then I can give you a definite answer, but for now, going for a good synthetic 10w-50 is a good choice, due to the modifications and high air temps.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Cheers

Hi there,

Looking for some advice for my Fiesta.

2.0 Zetec-E.
No real engine mods other than a K&N filter. Planned for GSXr ITB's in the near future.
Do have a quaife straight cut box so runs high revs
Track use mainly plus driving to and from track and the odd spirited run - so all types.
On a dual carriageway run i saw oil temps of 120 degrees the other day.

Currently have fully synthetic 5W-30 (can't remember the brand but think its millers)

Worried about temps on track, what advice do you have?

Cheers

Paul
Fiesta Si 2.0 16v
Mods: K&N 57i, 2.0 Silvertop, Samcos, GAZ Coilovers, Quaife Straight cut box, Wilwood 4-pots, stripped out track female provider of 'horizontal refreshment'
