oil cooler advice

Postby xrsi on Thu Feb 06, 2003 9:18 am

Am looking into buying an oil cooler in the not so distant future!

whats the best size to have for one?? ie rows.

want the widest possable one tho!!

and yes it is sort of nessicery as it will be used to fill the bottom hole in the cozzie bumper and also have the oil temp gauge sender pit in line with it to save tapping the sump!!

any advice would be great!!

Cooling the oil too much is a as detremental as having it above 80 degrees.

Make sure you've got a thermostatic take off plate to keep the temps reasonably even.

1.6 turbo? try a 13 row half width. or 7 row full width.

Are you sure you need one? what oil temps are you getting?

not sure yet as i aint had the car on the road!

but yeah, want a cooler as it will have the oil temp gauge sender in the line followed by a thermostat to control the flow to the cooler but will continue to feed the sender no matter what!

Are you already using the oil to water cooler that is standard on the FRST? The oil temperature sender can be put in the line to this. Don't think you'll really need a large oil to air cooler unless the car is at high revs all the time.

It is standard mate..

Its where the oil filter is..

There is a square jacket between the block and the oil filter, this has 2 pipes in it, 1 water in and 1 water out..

This is the oil cooler mate..

xrsi - the oil temp gauge should be in the sump not in the oil cooler pipe ;) if it was fitted there would only be reading when the wax stat was open which isnt what you want :)

Rob - that's enormous for a 1600 2i mate - that's ott mate tbh, check your cooling system, what oil temps are you getting?

Is there not a big danger of mounting an oil cooler in the front valance area in that a large stone could puncture it and you will rapidly lose oil pressure.

Maybe a better place to put one would be in front of the front wheel, cut the arch liner to suit, and protect with stout mesh?

like a said loosing oil is bad!
and expensive! like when insane managed to dump all his oil on the motor way and cook his turbo!
and like the ppl carrier at my garage that lost its sump plug  leaving it with melted big end bearings nackered crank, knackerd cam, and lots more

Al - there is going to be tight mesh infront of it! will still eb able to see it through it tho!! ;)

excursion - the oil temp would be regulated by a thermostat that recurculated (in line with the coolers 2 pipes after a temp sender holder in line) so it would continually read!!

and yes, oil loss is very bad!!
