Out Of Date Links

Postby wilkesy23 on Fri Jan 24, 2003 1:16 am

Im not one for moaning, but ive just been trying to view two sites, both of which didnt work... lockwood appears to be a shipping company now not a dial company and a link to a persons fiesta was also broken...

1 of 1st steps to good web sites is links...!!!!

just a small suggestion of maybe updating them...

"and a link to a persons fiesta was also broken... "

Which one? There's more than a few Fiesta on the site!

The steps to a good website are:

- Don't use frames.
- Don't force users to set a resolution.
- Don't use the default Times New Roman Font.
- Only use scrolling Marquees for news headlines.
- Make sure your links do something on mouseover.
- Use bold to emphasise, not uppercase.
- Use a graphic for large type.

All of which seem to be missing from the website in your profile. ;) (http://www.redditchshotblasting.co.uk/)

I'm not one for moaning, but I just thought I'd point it out. ;)

AFAIK lockwood.co.uk used to belong to Lockwood and was valid when I wrote the site back in 2001. It seems that since then the domain has changed hands. I apologise for this and as you can appreciate there are quite a few links all over the site. I've removed that one as I can't find an official site for Lockwood.

If you look on the links db, there is a facility to report incorrect info etc with a direct mail and a subject so I know exactly which link is in question.

The font sizes on this site are intended to be perfectly readable for anyone with poor to average vision using a resolution appropriate to their monitor - 800x600 on a 14" and 15", 1024x768 on a 17". If you crank the res up more you might not be able to read it clearly. Microsoft themselves use the exact same size (10px / 8pt) on their site, as do http://www.dell.com, http://half.ebay.com and many more.

You can increase the text size in your browser for body text and most headings, but it screws up table backgrounds. This is something I'll fix in ft version 3.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert in web dev, there are a lot of people out there who can code better than me and produce better designs. I would say I'm fairly good though. I learn fast and each project I do is better than the last.

I'm actually employed full time as an IT Manager, networks etc. Web stuff is just a sideline.

Tips for a good site:

Don't use frames - these don't index properly with search engines, require extra pages to work and cause havoc in some browsers while navigating forward / back etc. Use server side includes, which will enable you to re-use the same piece of code in multiple pages.

Keep the font sizes fairly small - for body text 10-12px (8-10pt) and use a sans-serif font, Verdana or Tahoma. Something that everyone has installed.

Learn CSS - it's very powerfull and saves a lot of time.

For large heading text use a graphic - this way you can anti-alias it (smooth the edges) and adjust the kerning (letter pairs, how much space between each letter).

If you're looking at a career choose a path if at all possible - design or developement. Decide if you want to do the backend code, databases etc or the layout and design. Usually this will be determined for you by which you're good at. Coding and databases can be tought. Design can not. It's something you either have or you don't.

I tried to do both and it's limited me when applying for jobs as I find I have too little inexperience for the role because I've been doing "the other side as well". I.e. I could have progressed much further with coding if I hadn't spent so much time doing layouts in Photoshop. Most reasonable to large companies will have separate design and dev teams.

http://www.w3schools.com is an invaluable resource.
