Painting a 2i kit

Topics related to styling, bodywork, wheels, interior etc.

Postby KingOfKingston on Sat Sep 01, 2001 5:02 pm

I have just aquired a 2i kit. The problem is this: my 1.3lx is red and the kit is metallic grey.

Obviously I want to paint it red.

So my question is, do I give it a go myself, or shall I get it done professionally???

Is the fact that the kit is plastic and already painted in metallic, going to cause me problems if I try to paint it myself?

If I do paint it myself, then I wont be able to 'bake' it. Will this cause any problems in terms of the paint chipping or peeling off?

Any help/guidance is most appreciated.

Cheers

(And yes I am a complete newbie).

sand it with a harsh paper to get the paint off, working down to a fine one for a smooth finish, eg use 40(harsh) then 80 then 240 then 600 then 1200(fine) available from halfords in assorted packs  then use 2 coats of grey primer (as directed on the tin) also available from halfords  then rub down with a fine grade paper for smooth finish then apply about 3 coats of the colour of your car 'Ford Radiant Red'? polish it up after 2 weeks, jobs-a-good-un

If you wanna propa finish though, you have to allow each coat of paint to nearly dry, then falt it down with 1200. Allow the final coat to fully dry and then flat that down. It will look $hit, don't worry. Get hold of some rubbing compound (called G2 - spraystores will have it) Put that on a wet cloth, then apply; basically the same as wax (but with a lot more elbow grease!).
Then rub off and wax like you've never waxed before. If all is done correctly the finish should be better than a mirror!

The 2i kit (incl. roof spoiler) + RS boot spoiler cost £100. Its mint except for one or two minor scratches.

I got tired of my crapy bumpers so I put the front and rear bumpers on 2day. Surprisingly I think the grey contrasts well with the red car.

I got my brother to hold the arches and skirts to one side of the car and took a few snaps with my mates digicam thing.

I might actually leave it on as a grey kit, since i'm inheriting a merc 190e in the new year, and will most likely get rid of the fezza. Although I'm not runin around on these pram wheels til Januaury. At the very least I'm gonna get me some 15"s and then drop it by 30mm.

Below is a link to the pics, be patitent the page may take about a min or so to load.

Any comments welcome.

nope, I live in greenford (in Ealing). Started my uni life in kingston though, currently working in epsom.

I only know of scrappies round my area, hayes, alperton, uxbridge etc.

Hold on though cuz I know a guy who may come through for me with a red 2i fit, and if he does then this one will be up for sale. But its only 50/50 at the mo.

Cheers

I know this wont help you at all, but it could do me a big big favour! i hope you read this before you start sanding your kit down. Anyway, i've got a 2i body kit, its actually in blue, but my car's mercury grey (the colour of your kit!) see what i'm getting at?
