jonyb4 :nothing wrong with the ss3s??

I have only known SS4's to be put in ZS engines, so that's why I said it. Plus they are beast and give a shed load more power over standard ones :D

just buy some SS3 cams, and a remap and bam your laughing far more than a puma lump would do for you

if I'm totally honest with you iv driven both a standard ZS ad a ZS with a puma engine in it and the puma the engine it came out of lol and I didn't really think much of the difference , little more noise seems a little quicker throughout and the vvti you can feel if your trying to feel for it  can hear a slight change in noise, there's not much difference between then IMO I see what you mean about preferring a puma engine to a ZS engine on ss4's plus with once they've been canned as mapped they don't last a great deal too long anyway lol regardless of who maps them, ss4's would be the only ones worth going to there as lairy as you can fit to a standard engine, and once you've got all the bits to do the conversion it's really not that difficult I have a few mates tht have done the conversion that I would honestly say I wouldn't let them near my car wih a spanner  but theyv done the conversion easy enough so it can't be that hard ;) if your worried about the engine being rubbish I wouldn't say a rebuild would be a complete must( preferable and good or peace of mind) but if just hunt around or one that's got genuine low milage and then just do ya usual cambelt water pump headgasket etc before it goes in, only take you a few hours to rebuild an engine without getting on to the Internals, they are fairly robust the puma engines to be fair my mates on was on 180k when he put it in all he's done is change the oil n plugs an give it abuse 24/7

Either way I want to replace the engine. It may have full service history and all b**locks, but Zetec-S are unreliable, and in my mind its only a matter of time when mine dies on me. Wether it be a new ZS engine or Puma, I don't mind. As long as I get the thing cammed up!

As said, if they are well looked after they are just as reliable as any other engine. I would personally just run yours until it dies - if it does, then when that point comes change it :)

+1 to exactly this , maybe if u want some noise they get decent Indunction noise with a panel filter and a few holes in the air box, and get it slammed with those Borbet's on :Q then if u run the standard engine for a bit the money you would have spent doing the puma conversion on getting your Frp seats and Interior ;) :p

you wont even need to drill the airbox, k&n panel filters clean up the noise brilliantly!

Before this starts again... If it's looked after, the engine will last as long as any other. Let it run out of oil and it will die. Same as all engines. If I read that correctly and it's done 180k then that's living proof.

Looks quite clean James. Change those headrests and get some leather treatment on those seats ASAP!

Puma conversions, the easiest way is to speak to Jack on ZSOC. He does them over a weekend and has done hundreds of the things. You don't even have to worry about supplying the engine as he does all that for you. Just pay the extra for the cambelt change and clutch change while the engine is out, especially the cambelt.

Suspension looks like it needs a little overhaul, top mounts etc. Phase one came with aircon, Phase two had it as an optional extra. My phase 1 LX had AC :)

his has done 100k lol, they were just talking of a known 180k engine as an example nick :P

its no secret i certainly aint a fan of any SE lump, but its completely true to say if its looked after it has the potential to die after 150k like any petrol engine

where the failing stems from is the fact theyre nippy cars the zs and puma, good looks also, so they attract often young, but mostly people that just rag them, dont really care for its wellbeing and dont bother to keep an eye on the engine, service it often and keep the oil topped up

that then when these se's begin to burn oil, and thats the start of a road to death, it usually drinks more oil the older it gets, costing you an arm and a leg to keep topping it up, or untill you forget to, the level runs low and the bottom end then lets go, and thanks to the design of the bottom end, its a massive struggle and cost to replace the crank shims as theyre built in to the block.

other than that theres nout wrong with them

BUT i couldnt agree more with Russ, ive also been in a puma'd fiesta, and a standard puma, and then compared to my old 1.8 mk4 when it had 115bhp, and theyre simply not all that they're rated to be tbh

i think its more the hype of a trend, "ooh mine has a puma lump in" "whooa hes awesome!"
than actually clever thinking regarding power to money spent ratios :P

oh and to add, ive seen far more power N/a from a 1.6 se then a 1.7, so i find them to be poorly to tune also

No its not. There is no set figure that anyone can say as to how long any engine will last, no matter how well, or poorly it's been looked after. It'll die when it dies. You can help it along the way (in either direction). But at the end of the day, nothing lasts forever.

1.6se's with big power have had £1000's spent on them, you can see the best part of 150BHP with cams etc on a puma which would be cheaper.

keep it as it is, i loved mine as it was - just a standard 1.6.

also +1 on what nick said about air con :)

Maybe I just worry to much? I agree with Russ on this one. Thanks for all your opinion guys.

It's been a brilliant little car so far. I don't thrash it a lot anyway. I'm more of a Sunday driver at the moment

It's been serviced yearly, so if I just get a service every year and give it respect. Maybe she'll last long enough for me to slam it and tart it up a bit :Q After Christmas I'll start getting serious with it.

Exactly the same as a 1.6 engine then. 4-2-1, cat back system, SS4 cams, air filter and a remap will see 150bhp if not a little more. I know that because my mates car had it done, but it did also have f**cked piston rings too, but that made 151 bhp.

The cost of that would be exactly the same as doing it to the puma engine bascially, plus the expense of the puma engine.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all James, and if you keep an eye on it and regularly service it - like any engine, it will probably last you a good 5+ years no problem :)

couldn't agree more, and tbh you wont see 150 on a 1.7 without the racing puma manifold, which costs a grand on its own!!!!

my mate nick has a 1.7 in his mk4, its been fully rebuilt, full exhaust and manifold, cams and chester sports car carb set up on it, only made 149bhp at the last rolling road day

if its been serviced every year have some faith, it ill be a good engine!

Personally I think the Puma conversion is a complete waste of money, I've never really understood it as the Puma is still basically as slow as the ZS. Then there's the head gasket issue on the 1.7.

Can't you get the conversion brackets ready made to drop in a 2.0 Duratec?

There's no "kit" at the moment. But companies do make them, if you can get the drawings from someone.

There is a guy on ZSOC designing his own kit which he intends to mass produce and sell. It's a good few months off yet though, at least!

Ahh OK, there were companies making the mounts several years ago, so I'm surprised they still aren't. Some people have modified the Puma mount too.

It's such a simple conversion so makes a lot more sense to me.

If there was an easy option to fit a 2.0 I would. I've looked at performance stats ZS/Puma and your right, not much difference at all.

I'm just gonna concentrate on the body work first. Not any major rust patches. Just bubbles, but need to be treated. I'll give the bay a good gunk as well. Gonna be harder to gunk this compared to my Mk3, so
much space in the bay

If you want a bit extra noise remove the caf in the n/s/f wheel arch and get rid of most of the inside of the airbox, there's a guide on zsoc iirc.
Don't worry about reliablility of a phase 1, honestly it's so tedious how people still think they have any more issues than any other engine. Mine had air con too btw, definately helped when it came to selling.
If you don't already have a coin tray instead of an ashtray I've got one available for £15 posted
