pistons for zvh

Postby frstlad on Tue Aug 23, 2005 11:04 pm

hi,

i am now doing the pistons on my zvh 2.0 litre,

i have bin told that astra pistons from the redtop are good to use? is this true? they are 85.97 !!

i will need the block bored out ive bin told to take these!!

overall is it a good idea to use them, (i dont ave the cash to buy forged pistons from burtons)
also how much roughly would i be looking at to get ma block bored out to take these?

would i need new codrods to or will the standard zetec ones work or the redtop ones?

cheers all

Yes they work well but there are some modifications that need doing to the pistons and rods to make them fit.
Your looking at about £30 for a bore of that size

You need to bore the block to 86.00mm (most machine shop's charge £15/bore + VAT.

You then need to insert a cut-out in the piston skirt for the Oil Spray Jet, and finally you need to modify the small end on the rods.

I'm happy to do the work for you with a bullet proof warranty

how much would u charge to do the piston set up, what pistons will i need?

i was chatting to jim hearn and he said standard 2.0 litre piston set up will be good enough if i get the pistons skimmed and kept under 15 psi!! is this true, i am doing the 2.0 litre [ERRR] i want it fast, but im not gunna run to much boost (wanna look after ma turbo), just enough to give me some power

You can run whatever boost you want provided you have the right turbo. If you want power, I would strongly advise against skimming cast pistons, and get some proper forged, low compression pistsons. Skimming is a good way of taking strength and heat transfer ability out of a piston...particularly a standard cast one that's being used in a turbocharged engine! :o

hi!
the only mod i have done on my 2,1 zt
is bored out to 86,00mm and
enlarge the little end to 21mm.
the calibra pistons are standard, i dont bored any holes.

and my 2,1 zt runs 2000km without any problem! :D

but you need xe pistons for zvh,
the vaux let piston have a cr 7,7:1 with 46ccm zetec head,
cvh head has 55ccm?
this would give you a cr of max 7,0:1 with focus rs gasket

thanks alti

hi mate,

im doing zvh, with a 2.0 litre zetec E block

the xe pistons (they are the redtop pistons i belive) i can get myself a set now of them if thats a good choice to get, i could get my block bored out and the pistons from the xe, will i need to change the con rods?

will they be ok forturbo use?

its either that or just get my standard pistons skimmed to lower the compression

Does machining the rod affect it's strength and what's the practical bhp limit of it?

Short answer would be no, but that's not strictly true. You have removed material (and therefore reduced strength) BUT... the rod is still weaker at another point, namely the shoulder above the big end.

Rod's will take 275HP easy if you don't det the engine!
