play in the turbo - what exactly does this mean?

i know that the turbo needs a recon if it has play, but lets say the turbo has slight play, does this mean its knackered. And which part of the turbo has the 'play' in it.

thanks, Adam.

The play is when the shaft has back on forth movement in it. If its excessive the turbo is Kapoot!

Be very careful what u mean "play" in a turbo. It should move VERY sightly.

But my general rule is..........if there's not tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust........it's fine ;)

What about if it has movement from side to side? Is this as bad as back and forth?

It's a VERY hard thing to define...I asked a while back and the only real way to know is to take it to an honest turbo specialist and ask them :-?

The shaft should have VERY minimum movement. Go and try out on a new turbo and see how it should be. IMHO, in and out movement is hard to define. A very tiny bit is alrite. Mostly, left to right movement means a lot of front and back movement.

front to back play is badf news due to the impellor probably wearing out the houseing by rubbing on it through oil build up/ back up.
some side to side play is ok as this can be taken up with oil pressure when running.

side to side is fine aslong as it don`t hit the casin, end float is bad news, means the bearing is on its way out.
