Please help. Which Amp?
Hi there. I have got VIBE QB6x9s and 2 x 12" Infinity kappa subs in a custom boot build. I currently have a rubbish amp (shark audio or something lol) and a budget JBL powering the subs. I think you will agree that apart from the amps this is a potentially good system which should easily send some bass through the car (enough to make ur hair twitch etc ) But at the moment the amps are overpowered and i dont feel asif the system is reaching half of what its capable.
So what i want is an amp to power both subs and 6x9s. My budget is stretchable to £200. i know that there is a few of you out there who are very knowledgable about all this stuff (bassboy etc ) So your help and recommendations would be appreciated!!!
Cheers! Tom

searhc for the selection of tocic amps, i use the tx 400 gor my 6x9s and the tx 600 for ma sub , all good kit and sounds great, good quality and both my amps were less than £145 inc postage, distribution block and the fuses

ello there mate...do apologise for not replying sooner...lost my internet connection at home so am unable to log on apart from while im at work....
with a budget of around £200...i would say go for this:
2 amps...one for mids and one for subs
JBL 601.1 http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/produc ... /2955.html
and a JBL 75.4 http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/produc ... /2911.html
bridge the 75.4 to run the 6x9s - 280wrms x 2
and run the subs in parallel to give the 601.1 a 2 ohm load and 600wrms
will be JUST over your £200 budget but will sound the best...also with the 75.4 you can always amp another set of speakers and run everything at 4ohms giving 100wrms x 4

just out of interest, surlly running two speakers (assuming they can handle it at 284rms, will be better than 4 speakers at 100rms?
the amp is outputting more power, which in turn means more sound..
or does having four speakers give a better cleaner noise?
cheers

4 speakers dont necessarily mean cleaner noise...4 speakers at 100wrms is more cone area...but dont mean they will play louder...they can help with imaging and positioning the speakers correctly making the illusion that they are playing louder...however, they are playing more direct to the driver/passenger...
i believe in less is more...you can get VERY VERY clear and loud using one pair of speakers...its just using the right equipment in the first place...if using lesser specc'd eqipment then you will need more of it to sound as good as a pair of something designed to do their job LOUD...if you get what i mean?
in my own vehicle, im bordering 6000wrms on bass and my front mids are designed for 200wrms...but im feeding them with 460wrms of clean power
i always recommend overpowering a speaker and giving it a clean signal rather than strangling an amp and sending a clipped signal to the driver and burning it out

okay just been out to have a look - its a JBL DR4002
Would this justify the poor performance from my subs?

dyno within the next 2 weeks...gearbox is going to take 4 weeks to be modified to my spec...hopefully early/mid jan it will be ready...the only thing i need to sort out is an exhaust which will take about a further week...so hopefully driving it in late jan/early feb with new engine!
then live mapping in the car for the final tweeks and time to set some times

probably about 6k which i dont think is too bad...the engine build has been covered by Fast Ford Magazine and will be published once the engine has been dynod with some results
300hp is easy with a ZT...its when you go above that the costs go right out the window!
Im not too sure if i should strip mine out (the 15's, amps, batteries etc) and then cage it up or keep the bass in there as well as the speed...but that means too much weight over the rear wheels then again for everyday driving i dont mind....i think LOL

Iff i was you i would keep the ICE. It may handle better without and be quicker but i think the extra handling/performance would be worth the sacrifice of what sounds like a fantastic sound system. Keep it in and youve got an all round show car well worthy of a feature in the mags! All your time and money will be rewarded! what kind of 0-60 time you hoping of?

looking around the low 5's...0-100 in about 8-9 and quarters in 13's...all stripped out of course...may even take the dash out for certain race days LOL
its not really built as a race car...its just a nice powerful everyday car that i take to uni and back! and tease the odd Ferrari and Porsche here and there most my races are from a rolling start so in gear acceleration is important for me
what you hoping from yours?

Well its recently been in and out of the garage for various little but expensive things which has drained most of my money and eaten away my 2ltr fund
My plans are to get a 2 ltr mondeo in it, keep it running standardish 135 bhp for a year or two whilst i save for either the same as what youve done to your 2ltr OR i want to buy a Escort Rs turbo like yours.
Just seems at the moment im spending all my money on my car and nothing to show for it ( tax today insurance drive shafts and other stuff)
Disheartening to say the least! lol
Low 5s? WOW i would LOVE to have a car capable of that but id rather have that performance in a Escort like yours or a fez. Sleeper
What area you form?

ok that all makes sence, but are you saying you cant blow a speaker by sending it to much power from a decent amp? (and what about subs?)
deffinatly explains why my components dont sound particually great running of my h/u, gives me great hope when my amps arrive..
