Smo :As far as I'm aware, they're all 25.4mm. But this also has 25.40 stamped on the side if I remember rightly! But yeah, I wanted a non-ABS version, although I think I could probably have cleared the airbox better and more neatly had I used an ABS version! Oh if only for hindsight...

I'm pretty sure that some are 23. I know the Mk3 are all 25 or so but I could be wrong. You're such a little scamp anyway.

PS Yeah a total Bic™ to bleed. You're supposed to "bench bleed" the MC but I found that to be a total waste of time, the only thing that got it 100% was a pressure bleeding kit. Totally awesome tool.

Excursion :You're such a little scamp anyway.

You come out with the kindest things :D

I was looking through various books and catalogues at work to see what was what prior to finding an MC, and everything seemed to be the same size wise. But we only deal with pattern parts, so it's quite possible that what we can get isn't the be all and end all!

I think we did well in the end with the bleeding, I'm confident that we weren't going to get a better pedal than we did, it would just have been nicer to have had the pedal a little higher as with the original servo, but obviously that's down to the Mondeo servo. I guess it could be modified, but then it's probably not worth the hassle. Given that I haven't actually driven it properly yet, I'm not really in a position to knock it yet

Do what I did. Get some washers. Get down and looking at the brake pedal, take off the retaining clip off the rod through the pedal, move the rod out, take the white plastic thing off and add as many washers as required, assembly is the reversal of removal. I had a very low positioned pedal after doing the same thing and easily bought the pedal back up in line with the others.

Dan, I had a look at this at the time and wondered the same thing! I wasn't sure if it was a clever idea or not, but I think you could be right. I guess it only needs 2 or 3 decent ones at the most :)

Since fitting it, my brake pedal is actually now in line with the accelerator as opposed to being above it, which I'm not sure is a bad thing anyway? It certainly doesn't feel too bad from having only driven it up the road and back, and with the decrease in travel over the old 1.1 cylinder, it certainly doesn't come anywhere near the floor, so I'll take it out for a proper drive first and see how I feel! It'll be nice to get some proper use out of the bloody car

I personally think it's fine with level pedals. Or that may be my weird OCD that says it should be like that.

Its only designed that the brake is higher normally in case you inadvertantly hit both pedals you're more likely to hit the brake first rather than the accelerator first.

Well I've got my new box to go in. Definitely done a few miles by the looks of it, but I can move between gears quite easily by hand, so hopefully it's all good!

Will take the old box off tomorrow and probably fit the new one on Tuesday when there's some extra hands about

I used a MK1 Mondeo Servo and Master Cylinder as they're more likely to have the blocked off clutch feed and no ABS. Otherwise I believe they're the same.

Popular Plus - 10/12/11 - Page 15 - Killed some things...

Postby Smo on Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:58 pm

Little update!

Back in October, I did my first ever track day... I broke it :D

Went to Lydden Hill with a few people, was very cold, but good fun :) Had a couple of sessions as a passenger in Mark's (MB7201) LX which was brilliant - he knows how to drive!

Erm, so what I broke:

Image

I'd only done 750 miles on it

Replaced that a couple of weeks ago, and then exactly one week later I broke it again...

Here's a clue:

You'll notice how the drive shaft is moving, but not quite how it should be. It may be it has something to do with this:

Image

Whoops! Oh, and these fell out too:

Image

And amazingly, I managed to drive it home! It was only today that my dad told me he tried to move it and it apparenly went bang, so I think he managed to finish the job off properly for me

So yeah, need a new driveshaft now :) I can do just the joint, but my feeling is that I should really change them for some XR/RS ones with the tripod, unless anyone thinks otherwise? I also think my 1.1 ones have done well with 5 years of hard abuse :D

you sure you dont rag it everywhere? :P

was funny watching that buggered cv joint, if your having jip with the mondeo cylinder change it for a mk5 escort one ;) all cable clutches on them

I've not got any problems with the Mondeo setup, I think I was just unsure about the pedal height, but that was it :) Everything else is fine about it! I actually have a modified Escort MC/servo which I bought about 2 years ago, but I liked the idea of the Mondeo one for not having to bend the pipes so much

It doesn't get ragged everywhere, but I use it hard whenever I get the opportunity :D I was close to stripping it or bunging it on a farm somewhere when it went bang last Sunday, but now I know it's just the driveshaft, I'll have some more fun with it first!

Well I thought I might have done some damage to the box on the track day too, but after replacing the clutch, it still feels fine! The only thing is, reverse is very noisy and I'm not sure why? But again, I bought the box cheap, so I don't expect it to last forever  I'll buy a decent box one day :)

Cheers for the shafts, Russ! I think once I've got it running again I'll be happy. I definitely need to do something about the rust after the winter!

Well I'm running an iB5 clutch from a MK6 16v Escort because obviously you need the right release bearing for the box, and then the right cover plate for the release bearing... Before I ran the iB5 boxes, I was using an RS1800 clutch and had no problems. It's only the iB5 clutches that have been a problem, but I think I've just been unlucky! Next time I'll definitely go uprated.

I mixed and matched, it doesn't matter :) The Mk3.5 RS1800 clutch will do you, it's low lift and has the full-width friction surface. You have the thinner one there.

It's not the outside diameter that changes, it's the centre point to the start of the friction material.
