Re: Popular Plus - 12/5/13 - Page 17 - Camera Mount!
I think it's top end, may be a couple of lifters and some cam damage; I really don't think it's done any more than that now... One or two of the lobes are showing some rough patches but I can't see anything else at the moment. I'm not too bothered, I wanted to dump the 2.0 anyway I did, however, want to retain the 1.8 head! The head is probably fine (I need to check the camshaft caps), but I will most likely need some new lifters! Still have my original 2.0 camshafts I used with the 1.8, so hopefully can throw them in. Will look properly in a few weeks time... Loads of other ideas floating about my little head anyway!

Finally sorted out the video of my first session! Having a lot of trouble with the file format, and it's now end up with a frame! But never mind...

Don't knock it until you've tried it I was probably obeying the rules a little too strictly; there were other places I could probably have passed, but I was new to the track and trying not to scare Steve too much

Yeah! I still don't know if the engine started to seize up or if the lifters just lost so much oil that the valves stopped opening!

I was wondering if maybe a couple of valves were slow to return due to lack of oil or something and you've bent a few? Should take it apart once it's out and see what went wrong.

Right, so it's August...
Up and running again
Did an evening at Brands Hatch on Tuesday 13th which was good fun Was a novice evening, which I felt was ideal for myself as I've never even been around as a passenger, so took it relatively cautiously, as you can see! I didn't want to go off, nor did I trust what others were going to do, hence staying well back on a few bends
Good to see a few people from here - hopefully some more videos and photos will appear in time.
There were four(ish) sessions, the first of which I've not uploaded as it was just sighting laps and two or three free laps, so it starts with session 2!
Session 2 - Had some major leg cramp going on in the last five minutes!:
Session 3:
Session 4 (Wet/moist - I prefer to say torrential downpour, but that's only because it was far too slippery for my car! Only about 7 mins worth as my battery went flat!):

Nothing amazing! I assumed you knew!
So, yeah, engine died...
Cleaned up my old sump and pick up that were full of dead engine bits!
New sump gasket, obviously...
Baffle thing and pick up fitted. Retained the 2.0 oil pump, this time, as opposed to fitting the Escort/Fiesta one.
Engine whole (Used the water pump from my old engine):
Engine almost in:
Engine in:
Oh yeah, removed my old 4-2-1 and fitted this (including single box system):
and refitted this to replace the black one:
... and also fitted this (With massive massive help from Mark, who really did most of the work! He knows his stuff about these and his welding was much much better than mine, so it would have been stupid for me to have even attempted it on my own!):
And to keep an eye on things, one of these:
So currently, it looks a bit (unexcitingly) like this:
And some pics from Brands (cheers to bakewell001's dad for these!):
And just a couple of my own from the day:
I'm happy to say that it's now running 100%; it's not breathing in the slightest, not a drop of oil has ended up in the catch can, even with abuse on the track, and it's not used or burnt a drop either.
Track-wise, it needs better tyres... so these are already on their way. I've not gone with the usual R888s or A048s (only the latter of which is actually available in the correct size anyway), but Kumho V70As - they seem to be very highly rated by a lot of track users, especially among the MX5 lot. I've got two of them already, and visually I'm happy with them! Very stiff sidewalls, which is a good sign, I guess Apparently, they're pretty good in the wet, also.
The rust really needs sorting now, the rear passenger wheel arch has completely had it, so it will have to be done before October.
As I've said a thousand times, it needs more power. But that will have to wait until next year now... I've only got one track day left (that's actually booked) this year, so I'll get that out of the way first, see how the tyres are, and then think about power.
Possibly a better suspension setup - I'm actually really happy with how the Konis have performed, and I still want to see what tyres do first, but suspension may be another consideration for the list next year!
The only other thing is my gearbox - It's not in the best shape anyway (this iB5 never was), but the ratios are a little too long for track; I really need a gear between second and third. So may build up a box over the winter, and possibly fit an LSD, too. We'll see...
Don't think there's much else to say at the min, so I'll leave it there!

Re: Popular Plus - 18/8/13 - Page 18 - Brands Hatch Videos
I don't really have any photos, but I do have these of the plates.
Front plates:
Mid plates:
Obviously, the rears just bolt through the rear inner arches with the plates on the outside (inside the wheel archs).
The rear part of the cage when fitted is about 1mm from the roof skin on both sides, and the front bars about 5 to 10mm from the dash. The front plates have a bit of a gap on the raised edge from the floor, so you might want to fit some packing washers (if you end up with a gap) - this is what Mark did when the cage was in his car. I've just pulled the floor up on mine - it's not going to go anywhere.
I think what we did was get the rear part of the cage in first, and then tacked in the mid plates roughly where we felt they were right, and then bolted the front bars in place with the crossover bar to make sure everything fitted comfortably. Then removed the cage, welded the mids in, refitted the cage, drilled the rears, and then temporarily bolted the rear cage in place before bolting the front bits in, tacking the front plates in and doing the same. Or something along those lines... Mark can confirm!

Re: Popular Plus - 07/09/13 - Page 18 - Track Tyres
Finally got round to sorting my track tyres out!
Kumho V70A hard compound tyres:
So dug the wheels out from the jungle that is my garden
One wheel was in the car as a spare!
All loaded up:
And finally, all fitted!:
Might try them out one night next week, but I don't intend to commute far on them as I'd like them to last some time for as many track days as possible!
