Re: Popular Plus 16v - 22/07/10 - Page 11 - Hunting Idle Cured
Mr. Excursion - That is something I should have thought about actually, I had read in the past that the lambda sensor isn't used at WOT, but I didn't realise it was only used up to 3K. Hopefully it still explains my appalling around-town fuel economy though The idle is absolutely spot on now though and it does seem to be driving slightly better on light throttle when cold which was always a little dodgy. So I don't know if it was down to just the heating element, or a combination of probably a knackered sensor and the heating element. I did remember today when I was running my MegaSquirt a while back that the lambda reading did keep dropping out at certain times... Probably should have looked into that God, I'm useless I'll buy a decent wideband when I stop spending breaking gearboxes and I'll just run the MegaSquirt
Jony, I got it at a staff price through work, I'm not sure what they normally go for. To be honest, there's a huge range you can use on these ECUs because most of them are the same sensor with the same connector, just different wire lengths. I went for the cheapest one at staff price which happened to be an Escort 1.8 16v one which my ECU is from anyway I could have got one cheaper on eBay, but it's just easier through my work because I can take it back if I didn't need it or if I get a problem. It's a Fuel Parts item, which even though is an aftermarker supplier, we've never had any problems with any of their products in all the time we've been dealing with them From a business point of view also, they offer excellent technical support Anyway, I'm waffling now...
With regards to your sensor, it should be fine actually (assuming it's working fine), unless Mark knows something different, as it's the exact same sensor that we supply for most of the early Zetec Mondeos, in both NGK (NTK) and Fuel Parts. But nearly all narrowband sensors work the same, as far as I'm aware!
As Mr. Minstral has pointed out, I forgot to mention I've also finally gotten round to fitting my rear Koni adjustable shocks I've only had them since last year or something! I've been running front adjustables and springs all round, but still running on some standard rear XR2i shocks... So Tuesday, for some odd reason, I decided to fit them as I wasn't doing anything else. Oh, and because Toby was encouraging me to do so. One photo:
With the help of my very helpful neighbour, I also got the tracking sorted out the other week too... Again, only one photo, and a bit of a useless one at that:
... yes, we did it in the road, and a slightly uneven road But the tracking does seem to be spot on now, though It was sooooo far out, but I've recently changed the arms from standard 1.1 arms to XR2i 16v ones. I don't think that was entirely the reason the tracking was so far out, but I do think they put it out slightly more than it was. I can now put my foot down on quite dodgy roads and it keeps nice and straight, instead of wanting to throw me all over the place
And lastly, I can't remember if I posted up a photo of the damage done when someone ran into the back of me in December, but here we go:
Nice and folded boot floor I might sort it out one day...

haha, tbh id still rather a zetec lambda, i mean the one in it now is from a 97 mk4 1.3 endura hsc engine, fitted to a 97 1.8 mk6 escort engine running on a 92~ mondeo blob 1.8 ecu haha
might just fit the 1.6 one fromt he Si to it when the 1.8 goes in the Si
odd i know, but i really love how you sound when you talk lol, its calming and harmless if you get me
you seem a cheery person

Re: Popular Plus 16v - 22/07/10 - Page 11 - Hunting Idle Cured
Awwwwwwww, thanks
I take it the lambda sensor from your 1.3 is one with the square plug and not the round plug? If so, it's definitely the exact same sensor that would have been used on a BLOB ECU
The idling issue could be the same as mine, or it could be something else. Could well be worth just testing your ECU with the 1.6 one from your Si, but then if your Si is working fine, best not to touch it and bugger it up (Not saying you would! )
And Nick, yeah, it wasn't rusty, I just never did anything about it. It gets used and abused and the bare minimum done to the bodywork now I might clean it up and protect it, but leave the actual metal work as it is... Really don't know at the moment Once my runaround 1.1 goes and I get something more modern and diesel, then I'll start working on it properly. Want to put another engine and gearbox in before I sort the bodywork out, though Priorities!!!

And hardly, not without a proper lambda sensor It did run well how I mapped it, but I'd rather know exactly how rich or lean things are

ive never really thought about how rick/lean my engines are running, apart from my Si being standard engine wise atm (K&N exception) i dont see how you alter it
and i dont even know how you'd find out cheaply, only thing i can think of is either a diagnostic, or a widebend lambda and fuel to air ratio gauge
Oh and the exhaust dropping ton of soot when you plant your foot haha

Yes, the last thing I ever thought would happen to my car would be a magazine feature...
... so yeah, it kinda happened Along with Dave and Ryan's Dirtbox
Only going to post a couple of photos and vids from the day as I don't want to take anything away from the fantastic write-up that Alex (Capri) did for us
Gary the cameraman!
Steve (bakewell001):
Alex, Dave and Ryan taking off for a lap:
A couple of videos of mine:
My second launch, just an external video:
And one from another run, just inside:
Buy the mag and read the feature Dave and Ryan deserve medals for what they did on that day!
Thanks once again to Alex and Performance Ford for organising it all, Gary for taking the mag photos and just being a genuinely nice bloke to chat to, especially about photography(!) and cheers Steve for coming along and also taking photos and filming some videos
Also went to Ford Fair on Sunday, did a few 0-60s... Not too good on the day really, car felt quite sluggish! Managed a 6.96 in the end, but I know it can do it quicker than that. It's probably down to how warm it was at the time though Really didn't like how they were doing the 0-60s this year either... Stupid place to have them!
Quick clip thanks to JamieFRST Hope you don't mine me using it!

Re: Popular Plus - 01/10/10 - Page 12 - Wideband Controller
Not a lot has happened recently... MOT on Monday which it passed and now I need to finally decide what to do with it
Whatever happens, though, I needed one of these:
(Bad pic, I know...)
Which will be connected to one of these:
And as of tonight, is currently mounted like this:
So yes, that's an AEM wideband controller and MegaSquirt (Ver 3 PCB/MS-I). The MegaSquirt I've had now for about a year (having ordered it over two and a half years ago! Long story...), and was running it when I first got it. I mapped it using the standard (narrowband) lambda sensor, with pretty good results, however there wasn't much point running it permanently until I got myself a reasonably decent wideband lambda sensor and controller. I was going to get an Innovate LC-1, but it has very mixed reviews, and I personally know people who have had issues with it, so I decided on one that seems to have very good reviews of reliability, and doesn't need free-air calibrating all the time. The Innovate LC-1 has more funky features, proper datalogging capabilities and is supposedly more accurate and faster, however for what I want, this AEM will do the job.
As you can see in the photo, I've mounted the gauge in the lower part of the centre console. I didn't want to cut any of the dash up, and I was considering using an old clock to mount the gauge (and using a MK4 Escort roof clock to replace it), but for quickness, I bought a DIN-sized radio blanking plate off eBay for not very much, cut a 52mm hole, and mounted the gauge in it. I think it looks worse in the photos than it really is, plus the dust and dirt don't help The worst thing is how bulky the bezel is, but unfortunately there's not a lot I can do about that. It does overlap the top and bottom edges of the blanking plate slightly, but it's not that noticeable.
I've got to wire it up still, but I wanted to know where I was putting it exactly first
Wiring will be pretty easy - All that's required is a ground, a +12v feed, and the feed to lambda input for the ECU. I'm going to use an old lambda plug and wiring to connect the gauge so that I don't need to cut into my engine loom - this will provide the ground, +12v feed and lambda input that I need. The gauge comes with two long cables, one for what I've just mentioned (plus also a wire for very basic hyperterminal datalogging), and one for the wideband lambda sensor itself. The hardest part will be deciding where I want to route everything in my messy engine bay
The gauge/controller can be switched between 0-5v linear, 0-1v non-linear, 0-1v linear and 1-2v linear calibration. To test the gauge, I'll try it on my current ECU with the 0-1v non-linear setting, and then once the MegaSquirt is connected back up (takes 30 seconds because I have an EEC-IV adaptor board), I'll be mapping and using the controller on the 0-5v setting, as this will allow me to most accurately do my mapping.
That's all for now I'll try and get it wired up tomorrow evening if I have a free half hour!

jonyb4 :jesus this is heavy stuff, i lost you after wiring the lambda to the ecu, i know that bit thanks to the mk4 conversion
noobish i know, but whats the main benefits of megasquirt and that of the wideband?
Megasquirt is basically a better form of engine management. Your standard management is set to give you as much economy as possible whilst meeting emissions laws etc.
The aftermarket management will enable Simon to get the most out of the engine, and the wideband sensor will enable him to be able to map more accurately using Air/Fuel ratio, within the limits of the engine so it doesn't run rich/lean at any point.
I think!

Still not got it wired in yet, not had a chance with how the weather's been
It may have to wait, though, as I'll be taking things apart again soon

Simon, our MS3/V1 is on its way now, any chance of a copy of your map so far to get us started with?
