Re: Popular Plus 16v - 31/05/10 - Page 10
Really and truthfully the biggest thing I've done is the 4-2-1, but it's some weird job which is apparently a Tube Torque, however I don't know. It's very dodgy and strangely works really well. I remember going back to the standard Zetec manifold and cat for a while when I snapped the manifold and it felt gutless! I don't know how it compares to the Ashley manifolds (or any others), but even with its dodginess, it works well.
Part of the manifold needs changing though because where I had to make it fit, at the time I could only find a bit of old Zetec midsection which has quite a restrictive bend in it, and I don't think it's helping matters. Also I'm still running the exhaust system which I was running last year at Ford Fair which is a REALLY cheap pattern job, and the bends in that are even worse than the one in the manifold

Right, quick few photos.
Nothing exciting!
Cleaned up the new coil pack to go on as the old one was pretty buggered:
Exhaust manifold got a bit of VHT paint because it was so ugly :
Inlet went on with a nice new gasket as the other one was a bit dodgy:
Also gave a few bits of the engine bay a bit of a clean, but need to go over it again properly yet!:
Majority of it back together:
And I had a think about why the gearbox might be a little notchy and my suspicions were confirmed!:
... One of the detent plungers was buggered. I tried pushing it in and it was so stiff. The reason:
The box had previously been reconditioned, and obviously not very well. However, it's made a world of difference and it seems to be a fairly nice box now Now if only I can get it to go straight

umm BLOB 1.8 mondeo ecu, 2.0l TB on a H.O inlet, and the maf i honestly have no idea what it is, this one came with the Si engine loom i bought when i done the engine conversion, i can only imagine its from a 2.0
but i havent a choice atm my 1.8 maf was franked, made it run worse than it runs now
guess i should start by getting a 1.8 maf

2.0 MAF is right for your ECU
You need 1.8 or 2.0 injectors from a Mondeo though (or late Escort 1.8 ones)... What are you using?

They should be fine then
Make sure you've not developed any air leaks at all.
Also, are you 100% sure the timing is spot on?

Might just be worth checking to make sure they're definitely spot on... I have to admit, I've never done it using the piston position and always done it using the mark on the sump - never ever had a problem! If I were you, I'd spin the bottom pulley round to TDC using the sump as a guide, get it so that the second mark on the pulley (clockwise) is in line with the diagonal step on the sump, and then whip off the cam cover just to see where abouts the cams are. You never know, the crank may have moved ever so slightly when you tightened the belt up or something - it's very easy to do! You only need it to be a tooth out and it can run a bit pants.

I find the standard mark is slightly out, so I always use a dowel down the spark plug hole. When building an engine it's a good idea to use a gauge to get exact TDC.

Took it out for a bit of abuse this evening and the notchiness and inability to get it into gear sometimes seems to have cleared up now.
It was actually quite alright when it was cold, but it was when it warmed up that it started playing up... Really not sure what's going on with it.
Not sure whether to go get this possible gearbox tomorrow or not... I'm a little unsure on the ratios so I may wait until I can get one I'm certain of

Re: Popular Plus 16v - 22/07/10 - Page 11 - Hunting Idle Cured
Yeah baby! Tonight, I have cured my hunting idle issue that I've had ever since some caveman bodged a Zetec into my car... Oh hang on, that was me.
"What was it?" I hear you ask... Well, I had always ruled out the lambda sensor (which has pretty much killed any sort of build up to me revealing what the cause was now), purely because it's always driven fine and even when I had it rolling roaded, the fuelling was spot on.
I'd looked at buying a new sensor through work purely for the sake of replacing it as a service item, but could never justify it because I didn't see that it could be the problem. However, we've recently taken on a new supplier of lambda sensors and the prices were a bit more attractive So today, I took out my old one and tested it over a nice hot flame with a digital multimeter... Unfortunately, it seemed to be fine, producing a voltage pretty quickly over the flame, and reducing back to near enough 0v immediately when I took the sensor away from the heat. "Bum" I thought. (I wasn't literally thinking about a bum, by the way.) But I just felt like I hadn't gotten anywhere... again!
Randomly, I decided to check for a resistance over the heating element wires, not actually expecting there to be a problem, but there it was... No resistance at all! So I tested the new one, which showed there was some sort of continuity across the element wires. Excited about my find, I ran outside and screwed the new sensor into my downpipe, plugged it in and started the car, and... and... My god, no more hunting idle! (Can you tell I was very excited about this?)
It all makes sense, though. When it's idling, the exhaust gases are probably not getting hot enough to heat the sensor, hence the requirement for the heating element, and therefore the sensor wasn't operating at idle, and possibly not at low speeds around town, either. With the new sensor, it is impossible to make it hunt, something I used to be able to make it do the very moment I came to park up somewhere or when sitting at traffic lights for anything over 30 seconds to a minute or so.
I'm so chuffed
Oh, but yeah, still have a noisy gearbox

Re: Popular Plus 16v - 22/07/10 - Page 11 - Hunting Idle Cured
A lambda doesn't measure heat, it measures o2 - it would be reading it's maximum in most environments other than an exhaust.
EEC-IV only operates in closed-loop mode up to 3k or so, and not at all in WOT mode, so the lambda sensor wouldn't have much effect on your rolling road run.
It's pretty easy to spot a broken Lambda as the low-speed characteristics change and response isn't crisp, you can also hear it in the engine note.
