Powerflow 4" back box to fit standard system
17 posts • Page 1 of 1
Not so much for sale as being given away - mint condition but tailpipe needs a damn good polish. This bolts straight onto the factory system, and has all the mounts and rubbers. I'm getting rid of it to get a big fat powerflow jobbie, so make me an offer in the £30 region - if you're local, I'll even drop it by.

Isn't that good of me?

Ps It *IS* a s/s job - no rust anywhere!

[Edited by Project Fezzie (07-02-2001 at 02:49 PM).]

Not sure in either case but the box is designed to bolt onto the standard exhaust system just in front of the rear torsion-bar. I can prob make it fit to any Mk3 given a bit of time. If you can get a photo of the rear metre-or-so of exhaust and/or the external diameter of the pipe as it goes into the back box, I can work it out from there.

I should point out that it's not a straight through jobbie, so it won't be much louder than the service jobbie - if you want to give it a really nice note, though, cut out the middle box (there are two on my system) and replace it with a bit of pipe - done properly it won't weaken the system, and will make the car sound a lot better than a nasty raspy straight through system.

It weighs about 3 to 4 kg, I guess, so postage will be around the £10 mark registered?????

The pipe is the standard exhaust bore, so you might not want to use it since it's not gonna offer a great deal of performance gain.

On the other hand, if it's the only box, it should sound very refined... the choice, as they say, is yours.

Alright then Al,
Nevermind mate I've spotted a Magnex b/b somewhere else on here which I may go for as it's from a 2i, so it should be a bit wider!!
However xrsi is prob. still interested.
Just a query; how much is your powerflow complete system, as i phoned up and they were gonna charge £375 , which I thought was quite bloody steep!

xrsi, let me know and I'll give you directions.

Rob - I have been quoted £230 for a full downpipe back system on an N/A CVH - that was the cost of the old one, too. Powerflow do the custom build jobbies - everywhere else premake them, I think.

Can anybody else offer some input on this???

Right you said that it bolts onto the main exhaust - mine is welded all along? Nowhere for bolts like a normal exhaust - is that normal for a 1.1?

The rear torsion bar is the bar running between the wheels?

As i have another box sat just there, however doing the string rappped aroung test the circumferance came to 5"

Could you please measure the circumferance on your pipe and let me know [ERRR] im not sure if it will fit or not, which is a bugger as i wanted a big bore!!!!

Nick - chill m8! You sound like you've had too many Nescafe sandwiches!

The pipe is still sitting on my windowsill, and the first replies down this list get first refusal (whatever that means - I haven't slept since yesterday #=/ )

The tail needs a damn good polish (brasso and wire wool), and you should check the thickness of the pipe first - the FRST may have a thicker system than a 1.1 - maybe! If all else fails, wrap a bit of string round the pipe running into the rear box and measure how long it has to be to go all the way around - I can do the same on this one.

Let me know how you get on and I can post it if you send the money.

Ps Box is genuine Powerflow, fitted last Jan, but have done an engine change and box is no longer phat enuf

Al
Have you never heard of a hacksaw??? I reckon that sounds about right, but as for a Big Bore - you'll get a much deeper, rumblier noise as long as you cut the centre box out and replace with a bit of pipe. The old system is just cut off and the new one bolted on, using exhaust system pipe clamps - they do the job damn well, too.

I'll measure my pipe tonight (as I do every night) and let you know. Your system should be the same diameter as mine though, since they're both 1.1-spec.

Okay, to fit it, you would unbolt the exhaust from the downpipe (two 15mm bolts), and then lift the entire exhaust assembly off it's rubber hangers. Once you get it on the floor, line the Powerflow pipe up against the old system, and make a cut 3/4" further back than the end of the 4" box (so they overlap). Give the old pipe a damn good sanding, so you get back down to bare metal.

The next bit's up to you, but I would put the system, minus the old box, back on the car, and thenoffer up the new box, with the clamp undone and fitted over the pipe. The P-flow box has a widened end to fit over the old pipe. Push the box on, and then put the clamp over the join, and tighten (10mm socket job).

I don't mind fitting it for you, but you will have to take it off at some point and get the wire wool and brasso onto it. I used an electric sander to sand off the crap that was on the pipe when I took it off, but never got round to sanding it down to a shine, so while it's shiny enough, and you can see it's a 4" pipe, it's not a mirror finish.

Alex

Ps I'm on 07947 354235. Txt me a date/time and I'll try to meet it. I start my new job next week, so Sat 11-7.30 will be out of the question - any time around that should be ok.
