Problem with 1800 16v engine

Postby stubs on Sun May 04, 2003 8:43 pm

Ok, my mate & I have fitted a 1800 16v efi enigne (out of L reg fiesta xr2i) into his H reg escort van. Got all the ECU wired up etc.
Now, we noticed that the fuel rail & inlet manifold were knackered (think they had been dropped) & we swapped them for parts off a 1600 escort engine. We also don't have the original air flow sensor & have salvaged on off a 1600.
The engine seems to run ok, but when you accelerate hard it bogs down real bad as if it was running on 2 cylinders or something. I thought it might not be fueling properly due to the injectors from the 1600 so I swapped them for the original 1800 injectors but this doesn't seem to make much difference. We've tried disconnecting the air flow sensor & it seems to run a little better without it

Any ideas?

You will need the 1800 MAF and lambda sensor. TPS can be from any Zetec but must be in good nick - try a different one. Plus, you will need the MAP sensor from a Zetec if you don't have that.

By the way, probs sound a bit stupid now but whats MAP & TPS stand for?

Thanks again!

MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure
TPS = Throttle Position Sensor

What's Maniford Absolute Pressure? it's not those 4 pipes that come out of the top of the exhaust manifold is it because we cut those off & put bolts in the holes....

Ignore what I said about a MAP - the Zetecs never used them as they had a MAF instead. You will need the bulkhead-mounted E-DIS module and ECU from an 1800, plus the 1800 MAF (mass air flow) and lambda sensors.

Those 4 pipes are the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system and if you can undo the nuts you can buy blanking nuts from Ford for a few pence which will help to free up some more power from the engine.
