Re: Project DTR * Winter Update * 12/2
Right as the deadline is coming up quicker and quicker thought i would give you all an update...
After finally getting rid of that red piece of crap and selling bits i didnt need and keeping the bits i did it was time for the crunch....
Coming so close to near death experience in DTR towards the end of last year with my Brakes failing on me at about 70mph coming off a dual carriage way... Luckly had just enough room and quick thinking to use the box to slow down..
After a bit of investigation i found out that the brake pipe to the ABS unit was snapped... So i fixed that for it only to snap again so i too the decision just to totally scrap the ABS.. So i will be using the Red FRST standard brake lines..
So it was time to finally convert DTR to TURBO.... so jobs i wanted to get done are as follows...
Loom
ECU
Engine
Turbo (T3)
Front Mount
Alloy Rad
Battery in Boot
Brakes
So here are a few pics of the progress as it kinda happened..
Here is my Newly painted petrol tank now fitted with Escort Cossie pump
Now its time to get the brakes and loom all sorted...
also get rid of a few bits i wont be needed too
After that was all done time to drop in the Turbo lump...
After the turbo was fitted up i noticed the Actuator was knackered so time to by a new one... Decided on a -31 Garrett but still used the old one so i knew how close the turbo was going to be to the Rad...
That was the next big task to fit the rad and the intercooler.. I brought a Pro Alloy Front mount of here they are a great fit with it mounting off the bonnet catch nice and central with a few bits vut off the valance the job was done... The Rad had to have a few brackets made up but it did all come together..... BUT it didnt leave much room for Cooling so did a few more measurements and found somewhere that did a 50mm thick fan so i decided to buy two 7 inch fans.
Here are a few pics of the Rad (has carboard cover on to protect fins) and Intercooler Mocked up....
As i have been doing this i have been buying a few bits as i went on such as some FRST & ERST hoses...
Also as the battery is going to be re located to the boot i will be using a battery box in the rear with FIA cut off switch in the engine bay
Well this is as far as the car has got so far so last few jobs left on the car are as follows...
Mount Fans,
Actuator,
Battery to Boot,
Boost hose from Turbo to Air Filter
Cut front Bumper,
Fit new Hoses,
Downpipe and Exhaust,
Service,
Thanks for looking please feel free to comment
Many Thanks

Re: Project DTR * Turbo Time* 17/3
Another weekend passes and it gets closer to deadline day....
This weekend it was time to cut the battery tray out and also get the fans mounted and fit my new -31 actuator also had the roose hoses to fit.
Here are a few pics of the days progress
As we stared Nose in the bodyshop out of the wind
also fitted HT lead holder
one of the roose hoses
Old battery tray soon to be romoved
So we started out come the angle grinder
After quite a while cutting swearing and allsorts the Battery tray was cut out.... Then it was time to sand down the old welds flat and smooth with belt sander and treat with rust killer after that was dry it was time to mask up the area and paint the inner chassis leg
Then the finshed article was done
Whilst this was happening i also painted the horn braket and with my Dad mocked up ome mounts to fit the 2 fans to the alloy rad (pics to follow of these)
Here is a pic of the Turbo and new -31 Actuator
As it was such a hard busy day we thought we best treat the dog to a day out so this is what she thought lol....
haha.....
I have a few questions to ask and peoples opinions too.... I have never been a massive fan of Shiny intercoolers + Rad so was thinking of painting them black what do you guys think...?? more sleeper ish...
Thanks for looking please feel free to comment as always
Cheers

Coming on nicely Rich
Can you not do something subtle with the bumper for the intercooler? I.e. not cut it out fully, but just open it up a bit where you need to. I think if it was painted black it would just look a bit tacky

You can read my mind.... Im not a fan of a BIG MOUTH bumpers so im going to do as much as i can to get the air flow there without destroying too much of the front end

Im totally the opposite, i love the look of big front mounts. But in your case i think keeping it silver is best, just having it like the cooler on h196jne as an example. Nice to see your moving the battery, what are you using to get the wires through the bulkhead?

We will be drilling the bulk head then threading heavy duty power cable from an Auto Electriction and using a gromet to spoke any mositure getting in.
Earth the Engine side to the Chassis and the Battery side to the boot floor.
