time to start rebuilding,

looking at the fiesta turbo steering rack one of the tie rods, seemed very loose
so bought a new kit for both sides,

old
Image

new
Image

while changing them i scotched the main body and gave it a few coats of satin matt black
fitted in the bay, happy with the finish
Image

last weekend i went to see my engine builder, area six / ian howell
the main reason was to have my fuel pump uprated
so ian has installed a pump from an evo, rated between 450-500bhp (not that i'll ever be that powerfull)

new pump on the left, to be fitted to the standard 1600 zetec fuel sender/pump unit on the right
Image

brought my skimmed flywheel home, as it wont be used on the harvey gibbs engine dyno
Image

got myself a new fuel pressure reg from ian aswell
Image

also my engine was there with the old cam cover on
aswell as a new sump with oil return on the back for the planned oil breather setup
Image
Image

my new t38

ok thought it was time to catch up with the progress

to finish off the steering i bought some new track rod ends
Image

also had to clean some the hubs where the powder coating is'nt supposed to be,
with a purple scotch wheel it was'nt too much of a problem
Image

which allowed me to fit the coilovers to the hubs
Image

and on the car
Image

been buying some gauges as its the perfect time to fit the sensors to the engine
the oil temp sensor is either to be fitted to the sump or sump plug
Image

act sensor from R&B motorsport to help me keep an eye on the inlet temps
the new inlet manifold will be drilled and tapped to take the sensor for this

my old rack was leaking, pump a bit noisy then priced up a new rack at £700 odd from fords
as i've been buying everything new i priced the powersteering oil cooler up, had gone from £80 when i priced it previously to £350
that was the turning point for me,

my old 106 track car was non power steering and i found it great

Reconditioned racks are fine, that price sounds like an outright purcahse price to me? Sandblasted & powder coated cooler is fine, or even one from another car :)

With all that power you have it seems like a step backward - with PAS you will grapple with the car less and be in more control. All the best handling cars in the world have HPAS, and PAS always stays on the more hardcore versions (M3 Competion, M3 CSL, GT2 RS, GT3 RS Etc.)

had some bits to do to the heater box,
renewed the foam gasket
Image

also as i have three gauges in the centre grill on the dash,
i'm blocking this up, so cut up an old numberplate to do the job
Image

got myself a nice turbo oil feed pipe with extra pre-turbo filter
Image

put the new rear engine mount on and put new bolts on where the front engine mount would be after cleaning the threads out first
Image

how the engine bay is looking at the moment with the brake servo/master cylinder on

the cvh oil breather return goes above the oil level on the block

ive got a feeling the air wont be able to go from the sump to the breather if its under the oil level .... ? :-?

Clark, it's better to return below oil surface level. A return placed within the crankcase area will suffer blow-back with a high boost engine.

Rob, I think it might've been you I mentioned the squeaky dash/vents to...I found the ever-annoying dash squeak in my Mk3 came from the point at which the outer corners of the central dash vents came into contact with the soundproofing up on the dash. They squeaked and fidgeted together once fixed to the dash. Once I notched out the soundproofing the squeaking left for good :)

fair enough :-?

ive always been told having any returns to sump below oil level causes problems.

example: turbo oil return

That's a different case: returning liquid which is under pressure. If there is any resistance to the flow the oil backs up through the Turbo bearings and causes smoke.

The Oil breather drain is returning oil droplets by gravity, and in this case, it doesn't take much to force the droplets back up in to the breather pot.
