project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
Excursion :You're better off either hiring a pro setup, or paying someone to come do it mate. The stuff like that Clark kit won't remove underseal or the more pitted surface rust. There are one man bands who will come and do an underside for around £150.
i got a price, but will PM you about it save hi jacking anymore

Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
what pressure is your compressor jay?
mark is right it wont simply just take everything off,
i had to strip previous factory sealer and my old attempts waxing/sealing the underneath
used a tool in the bodyshop used for taking back seam sealer without damaging the metal work
at worst it can inflict slight marks which are easily sanded
but in the end the shot blasting was quite time consuming,
so when it came to the engine bay i took the shell to a pro shot blasting place,
but no body will put the effort into it as much as yourself
the legendary MBX, seriously ploughed through it
you can see the mbx in my hand here aswell as the before and after on the floor of the car behind me

Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
its a hydrovain so will produce good constant pressure but i currenty have it regulated to 100psi for air toold and 50 for spraying on the regulators off the main air line.
i have wire wheels for the grinder which ive used when i done the rs, and i will use them for most of the work on the xr2 as it just ripped everything off in no time at all, the shot blasting is really just for the hard to reach places, as the mk2 fez has a well for the rear axle which will be a right nightmare with a grinder as you just wont get to all of it.
theres no under seal from what i see in there just seam sealer which i know is going to cause problems, but ill just dig it all out, but as i say, the blasting would only be for the hard to rear places i cant do with the grinder and wire wheels and its all surface rust in there, nothing major really, which is pretty good for a 25 year old car

Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
recently decided as the kitchen is in the middle of a big make over,
why not bring the engine in the warm haha
picture showing the escort turbo manifold's big restriction, which meant the power was turned down to keep it safe
notice how ports 2 and 3 merge into one
oh well it done me ok at 358bhp for now
picture of my air injector which allows the ecu to control how much boost it runs at any point of the map
e.g i make full 27psi of boost at 3k revs, but its turned down at 4k revs to keep the power down
bolted my powdercoated rear engine plate with new bolts on
got some other bits to go with the new ib5 gearbox, thanks again mark
the ib5 gearbox shim
hardly used puma gear selector which will complement the ib5 gearbox well for good shifting
loom and starter to allow the starter now being at the back of the engine
(undecided wether to buy a new starter or refurb this one)

Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
apart from maybe giving the block one more coat of paint
all was looking good, until i realised something
so i put the gearbox shim on to confirm my suspisions
the relocated oil breather is in the way of the starter motor at the back of the engine
so in the middle of sorting that at the moment, but what a pain in the arse
some new fast road vibratechnic gearbox mounts arrived
also have a few old fusion fabrication bits around
but chrome is'nt to my taste anymore, so heres before i started prepping
heres after some satin matt black

Excellent stuff Keep up the work! Shame about the manifold though really! Soon be pushing out more power with a different one when you get around to changing it

nice mate, that engine looks soooo good, i cant beleive how new and unassuming it looks
reminds me i need to emboss m y decals on my painted cover soon with the dremel
whats that dome shaped bit that you painted for?
also, can you not get a 90 degree bend shaped oil insert for behind the starter?

are you using a standard ib5 gearbox?
yeah its standard expcept for the choice of ratio's for now,
looked into a straight cut gearset but their all too short
so might just have the gearset shotpeened for now
the ib5 normally fails on the mainshaft snapping on supercharged st150's

I told Rob already mate (it's my iB5), but he doesn't want to modify his shell to suit a different 'box. The iB5 can take a lot more than people think if they are treated with respect i.e. no launches, missed gears, but like you say they're not really good for much over 250.

I was only running 5psi and hadn't had it mapped, so i don't know the power, was defiantly 180+.
The box was fine,it sounded like a beast! i only changed [ERRR] my top speed was 110ish

Re: project "JPH" 2.1 ZT 358bhp-365ftlb
The st150 gears are pretty short! 4th gear only sees a little over 100... Compared to my mates ibiza which does just over 100 in 3rd!
Shorter gears make it harder to get the power down, but when you do, it's pretty quick
The strongest IB5 boxes were built about 96-98, they weren't around that long. They have bigger bearings. They then made them slightly smaller around 99.
Don't forget there is a lot more material in the casing of the IB5 box over the BC. I think it's a pretty strong box. I know someone who ran 360 odd lbs of torque for 7000 miles and never had any issues. That box got some abuse too!

yeah did read about thayt, this is a 96' box, the reason i've gone for this box is because its that much stronger than bc box
had a fair few opinions saying it wont take more than 250bhp, but i'm looking to upgrade the gearset as we speak as thats the weakspot now i have a better gearbox casing
i'd like to make the strongest ib5 that can take my power if i can, rather than just going the mtx75 or getrag box
