Scort - You don't half take the p|ss when it comes to "getting stuck in"!!! :o Look at you go! That's a seriously impressive amount of stuff to get through, it'll take you about four days at this rate! :D Sierra stuff looks very very good! :oooh: I know what you mean about pulling apart a nice looking, well-running car. Sod the RS status though, it was designed for enthusiasts and their enthusiastic driving, and you're taking it further down that line :) Yeah, you'll be chopping holes all over it, but you'll be welding nice new metal in there, covered in nice new underseal etc :D It will be very special Steve, don't at any point in this project forget that :)

Mixon, Very often I do mate, not a great deal though, due to my working Friday and Saturday evenings, which is pretty annoying to be honest. Feel free to pop down one day though, probably worth a PM first, see if I'm there!

Heeman, It's not a bad amount mate, had a few people pop in and see me so stopped for half hour here and there for a natter! So not as much done as I would have liked to be honest. Mummy told me I was thpesial, now I will have a thpesial car too! Thanks man!

irlrst, Your not the first person to have said I'm crazy! I'm pretty sure thats half the reason I'm doing it, but who knows! Thanks for the comments!

Chris-Fiesta, Working makes the time pass quicker, and the quicker the time passes, the quicker I have my beast on the road! Cheers mate!

Cloud Strife, Cheers mate, I'm planning on building a camera bracket into the roll cage when I get to it, so hopefully there will be plenty of videos!! Cheers mate.

Shinx, Cheers mate, get back to work though you lazy git!

Well managed to get a few bits done today, had an interview at the local college at 1.30, so had to stop play for a little while. Removed the powertrain first thing this morning:

Image

Then I moved swiftly onto eating a steak and chips!,

Image

Which was lovely and just what I needed before an interview. Which incidentally went quite well! Think I will be teaching a day release class at the college soon.

So I headed back home got rid of the suit, and shod some oily rags again!

I started to remove all the braking components. I remember how much I despise brake fluid now. Horrible stuff, managed to get it in my mouth too. Stuff stings like mad on your tongue!

Image

It's at this point when I'm begining to realise that most of these parts will never see the car again! Hardly anything will be going back! Going to have loads of parts to sell, most hardly used!

Image

Just the screen and bootlid left on the car pretty much now.

Image

The offending engine bay, now completely empty, and crying out to be cut about and welded!!

Test fit of front suspension components tomorrow, it looks as if the sierra components may interfere with the escort front roll bar, but time will tell.

Over and out.

Steve

Thanks guys!

FezzR, You got some work to do mate! Uncertain if I can help with the sandblasting to be honest, I don't mind lending a hand with priming it up or whatever. I use a sandblasting gun up there a month or so, it was even a recirculating one, and the mess it made was appauling. There was media everywhere, which is not ideal. Especially when your planning on painting a car anytime soon. I suggest the good old fassion way would be ideal.

Heeman, Mustard....Chickens? Do tell me more! I will be teaching Electrical installation matey! I think it's a shirt and tie effort by the looks of it. I don't look good with a shirt and tie on!!

Rhino, I'm planning it to be finished for Ford Fair. FITP is a little premature, but you never know! Who knows where I will be at Xmas!! Being merry and drinking alcohol free beer no doubt!

Rodge, You got any more photographs mate? What gearbox are you using? I have a lovely MT75 should you require it!

I'll get some more pictures if you like. Just starting to weld the tunnel in now too (decided to use the mk5 cortina tunnel in the end).

Thanks for the offer of the 'box but i already have one :D

I would start a thread about it but some weeks i don't get near it and the updates would be few and far between

FezzR, Thats ok with me, obviously fitting around my car and work etc. :)

Rodge, Cool mate, I would start a thread anyway. There are some threads that have been live for literally months. Makes for an interesting read too! I'm going to add you to MSN mate, no doubt we may be usefull to each other at some point!

Well then, my initial plans of using the escort track control arms and suspension setup were trashed today. The difference between the Sierra and Escort hubs make this idea pretty useless.

Image

Image

This is the adjustable front anti-roll bar I will be using. It is taken from an RS1600i. The link bars are adjusable, as are the roll bar clamps

Image

This is the roll bar next to the sierra front crossmember and roll bar, as you can see the sierra roll bar is the opposite way around to the the escort one. This means the angle the track control arm to the roll bar bushes is completely wrong.

Image

My answer to this problem was to swap the track control arms over on the sierra. This points the bushes in the correct direction.

Image

The Sierra track control arms are about 30mm too long. I will be cutting the ones I have and welding them together. The plan is to make some adjustable ones once I have proved these.

Tomorrow I will weld the arms, and 'try' to weld in some mounts for the front crossmember.

Rodge, Is that a Cosworth 4x4 mate? If so then yes I'm after the rear calipers. I already have an XR4x4 here! Damn things are everywhere nowadays!!

FezzR, Thath coth im thpesial! :D

Spoon, I'm a firm believer in anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it. I did my apprenticeship in Engineering, then moved onto Electrical engineering. Anything else you see is picked up from watching people or asking questions. Also alot of advice from people on here! Hopefully won't be too long until it's done! Cheers for you comments mate.

Heeman, I had some food from a well known fast food establishment today, as I was too busy to get much else. Adjustability is the name of the game mate! :D

This evenings update, sorry to keep updating! It's a bit like a diary for me! :bonkers:

Bolted the roll bar on today. Only to find out two of the bolt holes don't line up, another Mk3/Mk4 difference I didn't know about! Nothing too major though, a couple of holes, some tube and a bit of welding.

I removed the offside engine mount brackets from the inner wing too. It suprises me how little holds these sorts of things on!

I got the crossmember mocked up in the car. After much measuring, then measuring again I tacked in a small piece of box section to hold it in place, while I manufacture some new front chassis legs.

Image

I started to manufacture the front chassis legs too. You can just about get the idea from the bottom plates. All the parts I am welding in are galvanised steel. Appreciated the parts that are welded will not be Zinc plated, however it gives me half a chance to beet the dreaded rot worm.

Image

I hope to finish the front chassis legs tomorrow. With any luck I may get to hang the engine in for a mock up over the weekend. How exciting!

Sadly it ain't a cosworth 4x4, would have made a claimed the running gear for the fiesta if it was

Is that the original mounting place for the steering rack on the escort? Thats one of the problems i have to solve on the fiesta, they bolt to the bulk head where i now have a big hole for the gearbox. Only solution i can see is to fabricate a crossmember under the gearbox and fix it too that.

Keep up the good work
