Well in between so many other things going on at the moment, I have managed to get a few bits and pieces done.
It's a pretty crap photograph, but you can just about make out the fact that the she actually has some front suspension bolted on!
I need to make up some parts to bolt the tension struts to the track control arms. I will be making new tension struts anyway. I just have to actually decide on the design I'm going to go with.
I also have to think a bit more about some strut top mounts. I would ideally like them adjustable.
I also finally got my rear axle mounts through:
So I can get on with mounting the rear axle. Hopefully see some more shell modification this month. I am planning to get the rear end cut out properly, hopefully this week I will make a start.
I also got hold of the front stoppers!
The phone is there just to show some sort of size comparison!!
The disks are a massive 355x30mm.
Had a few test measurements earlier on, looks pretty close, but I'm sure I can get them under the wheels somehow. If not, I quite fancy a set of 18x8 CompMo's!
Onwards and upwards fellows!
Steve

That shocker's a crazy angle from the vertical! Is that similar to the original ERST shocker angle? Doesn't look as though it'll follow the sweep of the wishbone
Those brakes are serious! 300s on the back? It'd be cool if they will sit inside your current wheels, but it'd look animaltastic on 18s Glad you're keeping it ticking along

Glad to see things moving along again, nothing worse than the December/January time to slow projects up. Those brakes are a touch on the large side, i suggest going straight for 18" MO's, just because im like that. And, congratulations, you have the same phone as me.

Sphinx, Cheers man!
Heeman, Think it must be the camera angle me old mate, it's a couple of degrees different to the original Escort strut angle. I'm planning on eliminating the last couple of degrees by using concentric top mounts. I can pull the bottoms in with the adjustable TCA's. But then thats just pulling the wheels in further all the time. I'm loving the brakes too! Would love some 18's thats for sure. Fund permitting!
Pez, Definately your right mate. Christmas and new year time is pretty hectic. I have a different project that needs completing fairly sharpish too, so this one will have to get on it's wheels then put on hold for a couple of months unfortunately. That phone is cracking to be honest, no frills, just a good phone!

Oh dear, even God doesn't own brakes that big! Fook me they're sizable
If you check March's PF, the Rawli-esque S2 is running 330x28 AP rotors behind 17"Compomotive MO's, and there looks to be room for improvement (just). I'm sure you could manage 355 behind 18"s, this is gonna be one serious tool

Yeah get a move on ya lazy bugger! I mean your only building a zetec turbo, a 4 wheel drive RST Ka, re-decorating the kitchen and holding down 2 jobs, you must have loads of spare time for the escort so stop slacking!
Love ya

Scotty_boy, Definately looking forward to having a go with them!
Markus_Excursionus, WHooop! We will have that showdown mate! Fire is good!
Guy Mk4, Brembos are big, and clever! Is that TonyTurbos S2 you mean? Evil car! Thanks mate!
Sphinx, I do feel lazy sometimes I have to admit! I even watched the TV for 2 hours ealier! I felt dirty afterwards!
Nar, Thankyou!
Not had an update in a while, I thought I would give you an update though, just to prove I have not forgotton about the car altogether!
Starting from the front back:
I got some compression struts sent down from Compbrake, to modify and use as tension struts with the newly aquired Series 1 roll bar setup. The alloy type I was planning on using, mounts the tension struts at the wrong angle.
The compression struts:
The bottom part is how they are purchased. The top part is a tube I have turned up to lenthen them, so I may use them as tension struts.
Here is one fitted after being modifyed:
I decided also that I would like bearing top mounts, concentric ones ideally. I got some for an escort cosworth:
I'm presently having some top 'cups' made up to weld onto my car, so that these will fit inside perfectly. My lathe is not big enough. BOO!
Moving to the rear end:
I have pretty much got the axle mounted in now. I had to fabricate some new rear chassis leg parts, in order to mount it properly, also remove parts of my car!
One of the things that took me completely by suprise was the mounting position of the sierra rear shocks. One of those things that I just completely overlooked! The chocks mount a good 6" further back than the centreline of the rear wheels. Of course the escort has the mounts in the centre of the wheels. This meant I had to completely remove the OE strut mount. It also took me hours(literally) to remove the bloody underseal properly!
You can see here where I have replaced the part I cut out with sheet steel and mounted in a new strut mount:
A view from inside:
Hoping to get the other side done tomorrow. I seem to keep saying that throughout this thread though, so I will not say anything for definate!!
I'm also thinking of not using the Gartrac arches. I have ordered an S1 kit, to see if that gives me enough clearance.
I have also decided on colour, Moonstone Blue.
Steve

Fantastic work as always mate. Guess what parts of my car are still undersealed, they've got a baxtered lip running inside them too, just to make stripping them more fun

Some very impressive work there Your welding is very neat. And it is one crazy project.
As for the top mounts, this is something i have also been looking into for fiestas. The top mount on mk4 escorts use the same sort of big rubber isolator as fiesta dont they?
(Also i beleive the adjustable ones are eccentric and fixed are concentric, may be wrong though!)
Do you have any pictures or diagrams of these cups your having made up
Cheers

Heeman, Rust wheel well! Cheeky bugger!!
Excursion, Thanks man! Yeah they are the worst bits by far, completely GHEY! Still got half the opposite side one to do yet!
Mannion, Thanks mate.. I think?!
Raymondo, Your right! Eccentric are offset centres for adjustment, and conentric are central but retain the bearing top mount. I'm plainly a bit stupid! Don't know why I wrote concentric tbh. What comes of too many late nights I suppose! Just so happens its your lucky day, see below!
Update,
Had the primer out earlier, so primed the rear wheel arch:
Still got pretty much the entire other side to do though!
Up front:
The 'spun-cups' arrived last night, so I thought I would crack on and get the front end sorted.
You can see them here both welded on. They don't look too out of place to be honest. They seem to follow the inner arch lines pretty well. Overall I'm happy with them. Took some serious angle measuring though to get them both right!!
With the 'eccentric' mount fitted, and the coilover bolted up.

notice you left your battery tray in, supprised that A) its not rusty even tho it never saw the light of day. B) you think you'll have enough room not relocate it

Ahh i see whats what with the cups now. Good work So they just provide a flat mounting for the top mount. (fancy making up some fiesta sized ones )
Im just wondering why you've gone for eccentric top mounts though, since you've got compression struts which provide adjustable castor, and you can go for adjustable tca's for camber adjustment. Obviously they provide a solid top mount as opposed to the original stuff but you can use concentric mounts for that. Just curious thats all
Cheers

Cheers guys!
FezzR, It's on my list to be honest mate. I'm not entirely sure what I would do with the space if I had it spare if you know what I mean. Time will tell I suppose!
Raymondo, No problems. I wanted to be able to move the entire strut in, without adjusting the camber. Because the sierra stuff is designed to be further apart if you see what I mean. I can now bring the entire strut inwards, without messing up camber. The cups also provide a good solid mount for the cage, the same as the rear ones.

i know exactly what you mean mate, but i can just imagine you needing to run a boost pipe through a nice radius around something and the battery being in the way lol, but hey at least if you leave the tray there when your finish i will be able to moan at you for leaving the tray in

FezzR, Probably right!
~joeboifiesta~, Thanks man!!
Andy.B, Thanks mate. Will definately see you FITP, will come over and have a good old natter!
Heeman, Damn that primer!! Think your right on that front, I will win the most stuff under one bonnet I think!
Sphinx,
Well then!
She's finally getting married in the morning, and coming home for a few weeks!
I have now made all the parts to bolt the suspension and the axle up. I have yet to seam seal everything, and there is still a few bits I want to do before I get to building the cage, which is the next stage. But basically, all the crap work is done. Will get one with some exciting stuff soon. Till then however, she is having a few weeks rest, in my garage at home. Another little project needs the space for a few weeks (watch this space).
I'm very pleased, I will be even happier tomorrow morning, when she finally sits on wheels, and rolls!!
Just to prove how happy I am, heres a photo of me looking rather fetching if I don't say so myself!
