Is it better to put it on the back rather than the front. Stupid question probably, where do i get it.

motorworld and halfords sell it, usually with the filler and fibreglass, its basically mesh put with tiny holes in it, and yes put it behind the hole then fibreglass/filler over the hole and it will stick in place, always a good thing to tape the mesh in place til the fibreglass/filler has gone hard and you have sanded it down

Update.

Postby festa-1.3 on Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:01 pm

Little Update Again:

Got a little bit more done. Was gonna put something behind the dabge hole. But there was nothing behind it, it was already covered up. So fillered it with loads of filler and put on second layer of filler to the swage. Gonna wait for it to dry and rub it down then primer if i have time.

Any some pics, this one is rubbing down:

Then the second layer of filler:

for next time, when applying filler try and get it as flat as possible without lumps. it makes the sanding much easier and will save you time - muchos easier to get a flat finish too

looking sweet mate for a 1st attempt.

the frst bonnet i bought was smoothed but they have used loads of filler. i just patched up the orignal work than doing it like that as i couldnt be arsed striping it back.

but thats a very tidy job mate i wish i striped mine back now as i doubt that will crack tbh.

A little tip to get the colour right when your respraying it.

Put your primer on about 2/3 coats then when youve primerd remove the masking tape and get some wet and dry and smooth out the primer where the masking tape was as there will be like a lip.

when you have done that spray the color onto the primer and spray some of it over the orignal paint work, dont go mad but personaly i find this looks the best as you carnt tell the difference in colour that well. Where as if you leave the masking tape on you will be able to tell its had work done as the 2 shades of colour will be noticable where the masking tape was.

if that makes sence

Cheers for the tips mate. I have now primered it but the camera has run out of battery and my mum has the charger. :( So i will post pics 2moro. I think i will need to redo the primer as you can see the filler which means it is lower than the paint. So i may need to redo it or i may just take it to a bodyshop and then i know it is done properly, but at least i tried.

when you say its lower than the paint do you mean you can see the primer through the paint?

maybe its because youve only done 1 coat of primer?

I've put on 2/3 coats so i will sand it back. It will only take 5mins. Then do more filler, give it a few hours to dry properly, then sand again and see if its any better the second time. :)

try skim it length ways, also make it pass about 4-5 inches top and bottom and shape it all with bonnet, if you get it so just the swage line has filler in it then you've sanded too far

I would weld behind it but the is no hole behind it. Something is covering it so i will just leave it as it is, if it falls through i will just get it done properly by a garage. :) Weather is looking a little better so i may go and rub it down in a hour or so if the weather stays good.

a lil tip on primering, don't primer right up to the masking if you get me, actually don't mask up so close to the filler because you need to feather it out, if you run your hand over it now you'll feel a ridge, and sometimes these can be hard to get rid of without rubbing through the primer

As said some fine grad wet and dry used with some washing up liquid in hot water will being the speckle from the paint, followed by a good T cut session.

The line is there because you have put the primer on too thick.

Its very hard to blend paint, especially metallic paint, evenmore so old metallic paint, and EVEN MORE so when you are blending along a gentle curve, as there is no natural line to paint to.

The best bet would be to paint the whole bonnet to avoid getting lines!

Good effort though mate, you had a go and you learned from it so get back out there and try-try-again! :D

dont be a wuss. i dont want a garage to touch my car unless its for a full respray its not rocket science mate just get out and try to remove that lip and you will feel better about it.

It will be bout a hours work to remove that MAX then tee cut your car 8)

did you not wet and dry the primer? think i said earlier the lip needed flattingand then once painting you should of feathered it over the original paint
