Quaife gears for BC gearbox

Postby Fez on Thu Jan 16, 2003 10:33 am

Has anyone got a BC box with the Quaife gearkit?
http://www.quaife.co.uk/catalogue/page21.htm#fordfwd
What gears and final drive ratio you got? ATB?

I'm thinking of getting the kit with ATB.
I'd like to know is the 1st gear too long and 5th too short for road use?

you'll loose a lot of top end speed but gain a lot of accelleration, max speed will be around 120mph on the limiter.
Grahamb has a quaife box in his mk1 zetec

I downloaded the Quaife Speed calculator. This is what I got:

Gearbox:- Quaife BC
Tyre:- 205/40/16
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 18.841 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 122.467 MPH at 6500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1592 RPM 40 MPH = 2123 RPM 50 MPH = 2654 RPM 60 MPH = 3185 RPM
70 MPH = 3715 RPM 80 MPH = 4246 RPM 90 MPH = 4777 RPM 100 MPH = 5308 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 43.671 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4711 RPM dropping 1789 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 60.251 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 4936 RPM dropping 1564 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 79.345 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5173 RPM dropping 1327 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 99.708 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 5292 RPM dropping 1208 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 122.467 MPH
****************************************************

The figures I used were:
1st 2.58
2nd 1.87
3rd 1.42
4th 1.13
5th 0.92
Final 3.85
Max rpm 6500
Tyre circumference 1790mm (205/40/16)

What do you think?

Sounds good to me - what sort of engine or rather power is the engine your going to use producing?

My new engine approx 150-160bhp is using a 3:82 final drive and ratios similar ish to that other than 5th which is more middle of the road so I get semi ecnomical gears for shows etc and some good top end too.

Love the sound of them too, and if and when my box breaks one of them there gear sets will find its way in thats for sure! :)

The Finnish law limits the Fiesta's maximum power to 160bhp. So for road use I'll be aiming at that. And it'll be turbocharged.

Is that a flywheel or wheel figure? For you hopefully that at the wheels.

Quantum :Is that a flywheel or wheel figure?

Flywheel. But basically the MoT inspectors don't care much about the power limits. In the first MoT after tuning I have to show them a dyno sheet that proves the car has 160bhp or less and what boost pressure/intercooler was used. It will be marked on the registration papers. After that I just have to make sure the boost is set to that when its time for the next MoT or if the cops stop me.
So if I get 160 on low boost I can turn up the boost and get more power. A bit illegal but who cares.
