Re: New camera
Get a flickr account and host photos with that instead, it'll make the pictures much sharper. Photobucket doesn't do pictures any justice at all.
What camera settings are you using for these pictures? Any post processing at all either?
Just trying to establish how far you are into photography and if I can give you any pointers on where to go. If you are very new to the game, it can be quite hard to get your head around all different settings and what they can do and how they can make pictures look different from one another.
I started the same way as you, essentially it was and still is a hobby of mine. I went through phases of learning new things each week or something and progressed from there. If you haven't discovered macro photography, you soon will and you might get hooked on it. I did.
But anyway, the more you shoot and the more you learn about all the settings and the more you play around with it all, the better you'll get. It'll take a while, but you will get there.
You will also look back on these pictures in either a year or two and think to yourself how 'rubbish' they are and you'll look at how much you have progressed to get really quite decent pictures and you will be quite proud of yourself.
As I said, for me it started as a hobby, always loved taking pictures of stuff, now I do weddings, portraits, automotive stuff here and there for people and I have also done a few business events too.

Re: New camera
Its hard to say where im at myself really
id like to think you guys can judge for yourself by looking at my photos, im starting a business myself, not going to charge atm as i need to see how i do, but it will be progressive to put it lightly
im very interested in seeing some of your work if you have a portfolio to hand?
i can take my own inspiration from it and see where to go about this business, im heading downt he same route as you just said
heres some marco from today, i took over 220 photos, this is just a small selection
just to add, part of me feels like im relearning a number of things now i have a good camera, the last is completely blown out he water by several miles by this new one
first post of photos were balanced on PS for contrast and brightness, these three are as they come, today i only used EXR auto mode, no playing with the settings further than the ISO

Re: New camera
oh aye missed have of my reply, ive got a tidy head on the settings on my old one, thsi one not yet, after this shoot (my first with it) i got home after using focus lock tracking on some swans, i got home and realised i actually want, i found out you have to actually point where to lock onto on screen and it holds llama
so ill need some time to get my head round this new camera yea
exposure and apature still puzzle me a fair bit, and i dont get all the f numbers, im dulling myself down alot here as its hard to describe
im sure you know what i mean about the f, i know ones the amoutn the blades open, apature, and the others how long it stays open, but thats about it

Re: New camera
Aperture controls the size of iris on the lens, as a rough guide, the lower the number the wider the hole, more light is gathered, the shorter the depth of field (the bit that's in focus) and the softer the image. Because less light is gathered, the exposure needs to be longer to get enough light onto the sensor / film to get a correctly exposed image.
To foob it up further, the longer the focal length (how far zoomed in you are), the shorter the depth of field too.
Increasing ISO sensitivity is not a worthwhile compensation for lack of light, even on a modern camera with a ridiculous sensitivity range - you can do it, yes, and use noise reduction to make the image cleaner, but it will lack definition overall.
I try to stay below ISO 400 unless I'm fairly sure I'll be using the entire image (so it'll stand noise reduction) - I'd suggest you try take that tack at first as it'll introduce some constraints to work within.

Re: New camera
You will find this website helpful I think. It's basically a guide to photography and all the stuff you need to know. Take a while to read it and learn new things: http://www.alexandrebuisse.org/resources/photo-class
Also this website is pretty good for learning new things and getting tips on stuff: http://www.exposureguide.com/
I do have a portfolio indeed, I'm updating it and my website at the moment so it's no online at the moment, but a few random portrait pictures to look at:
Random night landscape one:
These track day pictures were taken with a cheap bridge camera actually.
These are just random ones from when I have taken the camera out:
This was taken at 10:30pm under a motorway bridge in the pitch black:
The moon, of course.
My friend walking along the beach:
And just some random people from the same day:
I would link wedding ones, but I haven't got permission to do that, so I will leave that for now until I can get permission to use more of them in my portfolio, then I will post them up.
I've been playing with cameras for years now and I'm still learning new things every now and then.
Anyway, those aren't the best of the best because some photos are private work I have done so can't really put them up, but these might give you a little idea on random pictures you want to take.

Re: New camera
Cheers man The moon one took a lot of attempts with different settings to get the picture I wanted. The spinnaker one has been popular with a few people. I've printed a few canvas pictures of that for shops and stuff so they are now hanging up around a few random shops down my way. Oh and a pub too!

Re: New camera
Thought I would spam you with some pictures I took the other day on a random day out walking around Southampton and the area around that.
Please mind the purpley/blue pics, it's a custom preset I have on the camera for my random pictures basically. Works well on some pics, not so well on others.
The honda one is one of my favourites of that day.
Nothing special at all, literally all of them was a quick point and snap. Might give you some sort of inspiration though.

Invest in a circular polarising filter for the "through glass" shots, will allow you to control the amount of reflection shown in the image.

Re: New camera
Yeah they are good filters. I need to get a few myself at some point.
I just spent about 20 mins editing a few of them Audi pics to give it an old film look. I need some portrait pictures done in film style to see if I like it.
I love the sleek, clean/fresh and somewhat plain and boring look the photos had before, but for some reason, I like these better. Might be because they are different.
Opinion welcome from anyone.

Add some cars, over saturation, higher contrast, a bit of a vignette and someone who probably takes far too many close up pictures of things... and you get this:

Instagram is just an image sharing service. If your opinion of it is that you don't like the pictures people post on there then you probably want to stop looking at profiles of people who post pictures you don't like.
