Rear brake conversion question *urgent!*

Postby Stoned on Tue Oct 28, 2003 4:54 pm

OK. I have Mondeo V6/Cossie calipers on the front and now have Granada rear discs.

Me and Madcat have fully bled the system but the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor now before it starts any real braking!!

Is this normal and what other people found??

I knew the brake pedal would sink lower than before but right now I can only brake at about half strength which is hopeless

Plz advise!

is it not something to do with the master cylinder, seem to remember reading somewhere that if u up the brakes so much on a fiesta u have to replace it with a mk5 escort mastercylinder

Yes it is to do with the master cylinder

But why is it so bad?!

I was under the impression it would still work, just the bite point would be further down the pedal. Now there is almost no bite point and the system has been fully bled.

washer jets/fire service pump

run a washer jet pump into the tubes and its high pressure, attach a fire service hose where the tube was and the water will trickle out ;), whack the fireservice pump on, bingo bigger pressure

i know why it does it, but cant think of anyother way round it

have you put the MK5 Escort items on? The normal master cylinder is not up to the job, i drove mine for a while but i did have some braking, i asked the MOT bloke to check the readings on the rolling road. They were okay. But with the escort Master cylinder there is a big difference.

also, bleeding a system fully on an old Master cylinder can finish it off altogether cos of all the pumping when the nipples shut. So it may have knackered it.

It was not compleatly bled as the front brakes were never touched.

I cant understand why this would have happened...

the nipple was never shut mikey

i used a bleed tube with a 1 way valve on the end

i know these are better to use as on me mk4 snake told me if u use pedal and close nipple mnethod master cylinders can go pop.

yeah snakes right, they can go pop, but you need to build up some pressure in the system, i would anyway, before using the bleed Kit.

Could this be the problem?? You could try doing the whole system.

Funny you should say that because it's my next job. I went out today to buy a bottle of DOT5.1 and I'm gonna drain the whole thing and start again

All I need is some time and a bit of help
