Rear Disc conversion and Brake Bias

Postby grandman on Fri Jan 25, 2008 7:11 pm

Hello,

Thinking of fitting a rear disc conversion, and a brake bias valve. Question how should bias be set-up for a front wheel drive? The front has the FRST Callipers fitted, with grooved discs, rear will be similar....

The honest answer....... you dont need rear disks. On a FWD car only 10% of braking is done by the rear and good old standard drums are more than up to the little work thats needed. Rear disks may look nice, but as i have found on my ST they can stick

Amen to that!
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

I normally get shot down for saying that, I do agree though. Most rear disc conversions I've seen overbrake the back of the car and it can lead to some very scary brown trouser moments

Even on RWD cars where they do 25% of the braking they are often overkill. As the rear brakes do so little you can get discs that slowly rust from the edges in eating the pads. The callipers and cable seize up and you have a rubbish handbrake. Really not worth the effort upgrading.

if you are running std front calipers and disks then there is no way you should even consider uprating the rear brakes! you will simply out break the front all the time and its not something that is plesant! makes for very interesting new trouser moments!

If the fronts are upgraded by a great deal then the std rear brakes wont actually be providing 10% of the overall force, so if the front and rear are matched effectivly the overall stopping distance can be reduced over just upgrading the fronts. Just look at the likes of astra GTE16v's, focus RS/170's etc, and other hot hatches/powerful saloon's they all have rear disks that are matched to be effective with the size/power of the front brakes accordingly to increase overall effectivness of the brake package.

However, as stated, it is oftern not worth doing a rear disk conversion. I have one on mine as i felt it was a sensible option not only for looks but to keep the front and rear matched when combined with a more powerful master cylinder so would aid the overall brake package (plus my rear drum back plate was knackered so was an ideal oppertunity) but that was just me, if you are insistant on doing it or want better brakes - upgrade the fronts first!

ive got rear disc, and i didnt need any bias valves but others have, but coming from me that has rear disc, if you got money to spend and want the looks, get them, as siad they dont aid the braking in any way, and tbh, although braking is fine on my rs, the drums were better for the hand brake.

i was flush at the time, but tbh, there mainly for looks mate
