rear disc conversion?
hey all
apologies if this is in the wrong section. I was just wondering if it is worth maybe going ahead with a rear disc conversion for my 2i??. theres some for sale on ebay but it says i need to obtain the calipers from a granada/sierra i think???? im not mechanically sound with cars so apologies if my knowledge is a bit lacking. Is it worth doing or is it just a waste of some dollar...

my brake set is like this.
escort cossie front disc and calipers, standard frst master cylinder and sevro, standard brake line up the car, rear disc set upon the back, braided brake lines all round.
i do not have any problem with the braking system what so ever, and i do not use any bias valves on the car.
and ive tested it on a quiet road with my dad driving at different speeds and locking it up while i watched and the back end didnt lock up before the front, and when hard brake testing it still didnt lock up
i done my own drilled disc using a home made template too.
im a engineer by trade so i know its fine/safe

Well to provide another view you can expect your brake pedal to travel halfway down before it even does anything, you might need to upgrade to an Escort brake cylinder and servo which is extra work to fix this
Also yes it will push out your wheels by about 10mm if I remember right which in the case of my 17's brought them into contact with the arches and made them scrape.

i have heard of people having problems with the brake pedal but i reckon theres more to it, as my brakes are not like that, there as good as they were when drums were on the back, so my pedal does travel half way down before doing anything.
and i recon its due to the balancing valves on the rs.
i know lower spec cars like 1.1 etc etc have different set up, but i cant say for sure, all i can say is my brakes work 100% spot on, the only thing im only about 90% happy with is the handbrake, but thats the set up, but ill be sorting that with smaller spaces very soon when i get my lathe.
as for spacing wheels out, my current set up has moved the wheels out i would say 15mm- 20mm

The standard drums are more than up to the job of stopping the little Fiesta. If it worls why interefere with it. Most rear disc conversions I've seen and had dealings with have created problems rather than cure any.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

mine are just as good as the drums for braking, handbrake was better on the drum though, but even though i have rear disc, people do it for looks mainly, that was my reason for it

lol There's a lot of negativity towards rear discs in this thread!
Some of IS justified but from what Heeman says, The RS2K rears haven't caused him ANY over-biasing problems to the back brakes.
Yeah the focus rear brake conversion WILL bring your rear wheels out at least 10mm on each side, MORE if you use the Focus RS hubs/brakes as I did (more like 20mm)
I since had a specially-made rear beam by my good welder friend at work (cost me a crate of Carlsberg so my rear beam is probably the best in the world! ) we used the hub-mounting faces from a MK5 fiesta but shortened the beam by 20mm on each side to compensate for the FRS hubs (and YES we did use a JIG - took us an afternoon just to make that!! ) now my cossie wheels sit back inside the arches yippee!
I used a rally design twin Master Cylinder balance-bar pedal box with twin remote AP-Lockheed 2.3: servos and set the whole lot up on a roller-brake tester so I know the bias is correct.
People ARE right on here who say it's "just" for cosmetic reasons and in some ways they're justified but some well-fitted rear discs DO enhance the appearance of the MK3 fiesta AND are easier to maintain than Drums where everything is enclosed.
